9a auto box fluid overflow

right I changed the fluid on a level surface thus=
1, first drain 2.9lts original factory fill.
2, put in 3lts new
3, 2nd drain 2.9lts
4, put in 3lts new
5. 3rd drain 3.2lts
6, put in 3lts new
7, opened the overflow.
This is what I cant fathom because 1.2lts came out the overflow, surely that cant be right?

was the transmission at 40*c and on a level surface?

I've read this before on Vortex. They then often act as under filled.
The one I've been working on I put in 3.5 qts, drive and drain, put in 3-3.5 qts and never bothered with the overflow drain. Worked fine.
Do your own research as the above is not the correct method, but worked for the one I was running, a 2003 1.8T gasser 09A Tiptronic.

when i did mine, i just drained, measured and refilled.....so far so good. Planning on doing it again next oil change. I might use the "procedure" with the overflow next time, but drain-measure-fill worked fine for me. Bonus- I now have a scangauge to read the transmission temp

Lot of changes done on the 1.8 I mentioned. Long back story, but bought it that way knowing the trannys was probably not going to recover. So far, it might be ok, but it's not a "keeper".
There was no measuring the stuff that came out od it the first few changes.
Just suffice it to say that if you get what appears to be oil in the coolant, make sure it's not tranny fluid in the coolant. The coolant in the tranny fluid makes a mess you can't believe. Oil coolers aren't the only thing that develope leaks, it seems.

will the auto specialist chime in on the overflow thing, is it supposed to be level or is it supposed to have 1.2lts above the top of the overflow pipe.
the vw procedure doesn't tell.
