I have a 99.5 Golf. it's a mk4, and has an ALH and an 02j. Dieselgeek says their mk4 sigma short shifter and shifter bushing set doesn't fit the 99.5 but I feel like it should if it has an 02j. Am I mistaken?

99.5 cars came with a MK3 style shift tower, but you can upgrade it - read this thread:

Best thing you could ever do for that shifter is to ditch the whole craptastic thing and swap in a newer version. Amazing how much better it will feel.

I just picked up an 03 shifter box and shift tower. I was seeing some people say you have to swap the shift tower receiver… do you have any input?

They improved the socket the shift tower fits into at the bottom (the little part with the 'VW' logo on it). The later cars have a little spring clip in them, supposed to help with a more positive feel in the shifter. I don't know exactly when that happened, but I think 2003 would have the newer version.

The shift tower assembly is just held in with two bolts. You'll have to change the connector on your reverse light switch.
