I recently acquired a 98 New Beetle TDI that needed some TLC. That, and: Dieselgeek Panzerplate FMJ, Glove Box Door, Beetle Radio, Monster Mats, New Rotors and Pads all around, Engine Appearance sound cover, VagCom IQ Adaptation, New radiator support, New Front fog lights and lower valance, New Clock, Cruise Control re-adapted so it works, removal of odd funky graphics from previous owner, wetsanding - buffing and polishing, Herbie Graphics installation, passenger door lock assy repair, and other odds and ends. It's been in the garage for about 3 weeks while I waited for parts, painted, installed and tweaked things - but its done for now. The kids love it and it is a real head turner - smile maker. Hope you like it!

Nice looking ride!

About the door locks that you had to replace on the passenger side.....Did your car make the chiming noise every so often outta the blue until you hit the power door lock button? I am having that problem with mine.

How hard was it to replace the mechansim?

Thanks!

I had to open up and repair the door lock mechanism on the passenger door because the power door lock/unlock was not functional, and the interior light(as lame as it is) wasn't coming on when the door was opened.

The door isn't too bad to work on, but it is a nuisance job. I've done a dozen or so window clip repairs on golfs, jettas, and the beetle door is similar. I'll update this post with a link that has a great how to for a passat which is very similar.

Chances are one of the switches (there are three) are getting stuck and need some lubrication. Here is another post for your pleasure.

Nice work...

I bought a sticker kit ($120), bought some auto grade magnetic sheet material ($70) and made a kit that I still have. Only thing is it only sticks to metal surfaces, so bumpers are out. Currently it's sticking to my garage door. Just haven't had the time to put them on lately.... I have to wash the car before being applied... Ahhh.. how nice it would be to have the time to wash my car...

That's a clever idea - using the auto grade magnetic sheet.

I've washed my car when it's been freezing out - drying ice off of the surface.. hehe

Happy someone did this. I'm rebuilding and then upgrading my NB engine before I add the Herbie graphics. Painting car black though, tinting windows, with light grey "53" logo and grey stripes. Adding 17/22 turbo and 2.5 straight back exhaust. Your car looks great.

Cool, another TDI Herbie! Here's mine:

I created my own decals (art, cutting and install), and repainted a set of spare rims to get closer to the Rallye look.

Like you said, it's a head-turner - I get folks grabbing cell-phone camera pics all the time...
