Well my set of tires will not make it to the winter.

Been looking for something to keep it on the road.

Ive found a winter set on 1990 honda prelude rims. Looking it up I find.
Toyo Observe GSI-5 winter tires. 195/60R14

Asking $400.00
1990 Honda Prelude 4 lug 3.94 inch or 100mm High Positive Offset

Will this fit my passat?

Also found some corrado rims with tires.
4x Hankook Ventus H101 M+S
P205/55R15 87S
2 have about 1/8" of tread
2 have about 1/4" of tread
for 600$. Seems pricey.

Any suggestions?

If I remember right, Honda uses a smaller centerbore than VW does. So if you want to use Honda wheels on your Passat, you'll have to have the center of each wheel opened up by a machine shop.

the centerbore on the steel honda rims is ~1-2MM smaller. I dunno if alloys are the same.

you can open it with a die grinder and fit them in a pinch or if you are trying to save money.

I did this on some honda steelies fitted to my 1998 jetta a few years back. Worked well enough considering i got the 4 steel rims and 4 tires w/ 1/2 tread for $100.

Here is the chart I used the last time I was looking for tires/rims. I ended up with some Saturn alloy wheels with some nice snow tires. Be aware that there is one more piece of information needed, that is the lug bolt seat style and length. I had to buy different wheel bolts, which I think cost almost $100.

Things I consider when looking for wheels:

rim width
offset (listed on wheels as ETXX where XX is a number)
lug bolt type (VW wheels use a ball seat lug bolt)

Many aftermarket or non-VW wheels use a cone seat. A great source for cone seat lug bolts (in same size length as VW std lug bolts) is from BMW. They are just the same length and are cone seat instead of ball, and they are 17mm hex as well.

Depending on rim width I try and stick with wheels that have an offset in the region of 35-38. Anything more than 40 and the rear wheels might need spacers to make them look less tucked in back there.

if you are seriously interested, I have 4 studded snow tires on borbet 15" alloy rims, ready to go, FOR SALE. $400, firm. stock 15' size Goodyear winterguard. I'm in lower ny, so you would have to figure out shipping. these were used for 2 full winters and have around 5-6000 miles on them. they still look new and perform great in the snow. let me know. these are from my last car, a 97 Passat tdi

Have you tried looking at the Wheel and Tire classified section of VW Vortex? Lots of people selling old wheels for a decent price and less likely to run into fit or compatibility issues.

4x100 15" Wheels, Spare Tire Options

A question for anyone running non-stock 4x100 15" or larger wheels on a B4,, what are you using for a spare tire? I've got a set of Corrado steel wheels that I'd like to use, wondering what I can get in the way of a spare. I've seen a couple Corrado temporary spares for sale, would that work?

You can keep the same 14" spare. If you have a damaged front tire and big front brakes, you have to swap it with the rear wheel and place the spare at the rear position. I would not use a spare wheel on the front position anyway.

Is lug bolt type really the determining factor for whether a wheel fits a vehicle or not if the physical dimensions like bolt pattern, diameter, width and offset are comparable and the center bore differences can be overcome with hub centric rings?

I am looking at a set of Borbet F wheels, 4x100, 15x6, ET35, the same dimensions as the Corrado steel wheels currently on my B4 minus the center bore. I understand hub centric rings are needed, 64.1mm > 57.1mm. As for lug bolts, VW OEM are ball seat and from what I've read, the Borbet is a cone seat wheel. Steve, that link you referenced in post #6 lists M12x1.5b lug bolt for 90-97 4cyl, should I be looking for that size bolt with cone seat type? Are all cone seat lug bolts the same or are they specific to the wheel manufacturer?

In short I think so, yes.

From what little I Know I think all cone seat lug bolts use a 60 degree cone. At one time I thought someone used something with a 45 degree cone but I don't think that's very common anymore.

Borbet uses a 60 degree cone race that's the same spec as OE BMW, so for BMW you can use the stock lug bolts to fasten the aftermarket wheels as long as they aren't significantly thicker than the OE wheels.

I think for the Borbet E wheels I have I used BMW lug bolts and the black VW plastic lug bolt caps that were used on VW mk3 alloy wheels from the factory. As long as you have nine turns of engagement (or close) it's sufficient.

Most all aftermarket manufacturers that I know of have standardized on the cone seat. Borbet, Mille Miglia, BBS etc.

If you get your hub rings and cone lugs you'll be fine, and let me know where you get your hub rings, I might need a set.

Steve, I bought mine from Amazon (X AUTOHAUX 4pcs OD 63.4mm to ID 57.1mm Aluminum Alloy Car Hub Centric Rings Wheel Bore Center Spacer https://a.co/d/7TMVJCm) and they fit perfectly with my MSW 16” wheels. They’re also aluminum, which is nice because the original plastic ones disintegrated after a fashion.
