I hate to stir the pot of disbelief, but I nailed a 920 last summer in my 99 NB on a combination of "in-and-around" and highway miles.

I never exceeded 65 mph, did long stretches at 55, and basically accelerated so slowly that every little-old-lady in the county was flipping me the bird! (when you have a blue-hair in a '67 Biscayne riding your ass, you are doing what needs to be done
)

Yes, the car is modded. It breathes nothing but pure air through a very clean and well cooled intercooler; and it rides on max-pressure slightly over sized tires. But it exhausts through factory pipes, and it is chipped...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Just refilled mine (at 600 miles, sorry to those of you who like to live near the edge). Took almost exactly 12 gallons. Gave me a fuel efficiency of 49.8+ MPG, and the car only has 1500 miles on it. I'm loving this.

Most of those miles were highway, some at 80MPH with A/C on, some on back highways at 45-50MPH without A/C (about half and half), plus about 1/2 hour sitting in traffic.

Anyway, looks like 3.5Gal is my reserve.

I would simply drive it until the fuel light comes on, then fill it. Then you know your reserve on your car for sure

Whoops, I did it again.....

Here are the numbers:

901.3 miles

15.681 US Gallons

57.477 mpg

Vented until fuel was bubble free and sitting at top lip of NB fuel port.

If you project forward to a theoretical 16.664 gallons (as taken from another thread...), then I was going to go dry at 957.8 miles....

Here's the cool part.

This was "in and around" mileage!

Yeah, there was some highway thrown in, but for the most part, this represents my daily commute, runs to the grocery store, trips here and there, etc...

Man, I can smell the thousand-mile mark!!!! I need to get an even 60 mpg across the entire tank.

Hmmmmm, sounds like it's time for one of those ethically-questionable "mileage runs"...

I've been off for a while. Getting better milage and clipping coupons is how I make my day. I'm not a record holder, but have broken 1K with the '96 Passat 3X and approached a number of times but topped off anyway.
So how do I do it. I drive conservitively. Easy Acceleration, upshift near 2K on the tach, and use Cruise Control on long, limited access trips.
The vent, with patience, at home a final top off with the rear wheel with the filler cap side up on a steel ramp. the car is tilted with the filler spout highest. Its my belief there is a cavity never filled when the car is sitting level.
This my person speculation, as I have never seen a tank removed from the car. Watch your tire pressure!

I went 840 miles (exact) just today. Could have gone more if I wasn't worried about where the filling station was, or all the truck, redneck/idiot, and motorhome traffic. That's with a 2000 Jetta.

The fuel light went on at exactly 800 miles (why are the round numbers in miles?). That was 3.9L/100km or 60USMPG, 73IMPG.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sounds about right, Bill - and you would have easily made 800 miles. On my third tank of gas, the light come on at 726 miles, and we drove on to 804 before topping up with 16.2 gallons. Since we were averaging 49+ MPG at about 73 MPH with the a/c on, we could have gone another 20 miles (theoretically) if our tank holds 16.6 gallons (as reported elsewhere on this site).

Do the "ventectomy" and "fill it to the brim" next time ... then go for it!

None now, .
I did one of those economy runs one spring. No a/c needed and windows up doing the 55 MPH for the 50.2 mile drive one way to work for 5 days. It drove nuts but when I did the fuel check, it was 73 MPG. Before anyone goes nuts on me the speed limit on the roads was 55 MPH and I usually ran along about 65. I might on ocassions zoom up to 80 or 90 passing, but it was pretty well patroled by state police. At the time the car had less the 20K on the clock. I generally averaged about 58 MPG, because I was always blowing the cobbs out.
I loved to embarrase Ford and Chevy truck owners.

I joined the 900 mile club August 29th. I drove 922 miles on one tank of fuel. I went approximately 58 miles after the light came on. When I filled up it took 16.828 gallons of fuel.

The driving was entirely around town, and I was driving carefully, but functional within traffic. No fast starts, but getting up to highway speeds readily.

I'm not sure if this is the "official" 900 mile club thread, but it seemed to have the most entries after doing a search.

2001 Golf 5 speed with 62,350 miles, stock except for Amsoil panel filter, Delvac 1, using Amoco Premier (no additives), original Continental tires on front @ 32 psi cold, (rears are replacement Contis @ 41 psi)

17.028 gallons
917.6 miles (corrected odometer reading)
53.88 mpg on 90% highway miles driving 68 mph (indicated) @ 2400 rpm except when passing at 75 mph/2600 rpm. Some traffic jam bumper to bumper driving, some backroad driving to get around Memorial Day highway back ups.

Light came on at 810 miles. Alot of praying from that point until I could get to our local B20 station.

__ Filled up tonight for my *3rd* 900-mile tank in a row. Haven't run the MPG but it should be in the 58-59 range (like the other two). Light on at 830 tonight, it was about 840 on one and 860 on the other.

__. I *love* this car.

Did it again!

Several interesting numbers here...

Miles: 901 even (That's a good number!)

Fuel: (And this is remarkable: 16.79 gallons)

Remember - this is an '03 Jetta Wagon TDI -

Mileage: 53 mpg

Last fill up: May 3rd (Over 30 days ago!)

I luv my car!

Hey, I just did it again too! 900.4 miles, 15.598, 57.7 mpg on fine 40 cetane Sunoco. First time I did this well, I think, without taking a long drive on flat ground. I'm wondering if the timing adaptation helped.

I honestly doubt that any of you reached 900 miles but if you did, congrats. It seems highly impossible, I am lucky if I get 500 per tank.

__. Well, if I'm lying, I'm lying BIG because I just got my 4th 900 mile tank in a row. 904 miles on the odo (I estimate 911 miles true) from Richmond VA to London, Ontario and back to Salamanca, NY (border of NY & PA on US 219, south of Buffalo). Took exactly 15 gallons of fuel, that's 60 mpg. And this kinda blows the "flat land is necessary for good mileage theory". I drove from VA up to Breezewood, PA, then up I-99 past Altoona and across to I-80 and then US 219 to Buffalo. One sign on I-80 said "Highest point on I-80 East of the Rockies - 2550 Ft Above Sea Level". And the drive up US 219 is very hilly. But I think that the biggest factor is that I drive like somebody's gramma.

__. I love this car!

Look at VFoot's post. He should have been in the 1,000 mile club, but he was to chicken to run it low. I have also run 900 miles, I filled it up (vented) with 17 gallons.

lol. My light went on at 825 miles. Even if I would have had 1.4 gallons left when I filled at 900, that still wouldn't have gotten me to 1000.

Think I could have made 900 but the girlfriend wouldn't have liked it. 827 miles and the light still wasn't on. I was passing a Gulf station in CT which had the Dieselect. 14.76 gallons so 56 mpg. by far my best. all my other tanks were 44-48 mpg but this was my only real road trip tank. From Boston to Maryland and back to CT (almost MA) before I filled up.

That's F'd up man!

What am I doing?

Lying?

Listen, junior, you need to keep your words soft, gentle, and palatable.

You never know when somebody's gonna make you eat them!

900 miles is not only possible - but multiple members are making it happen REGULARLY.

Myself included.

Your only possible conclusion is.

1. These guys ARE doing it.

2. If you are not, then

a. You are not trying.
b. You are not capable.

Which-ever - it's you. Not your car.

Deal with it.

1000 miles per tank is possible.

I put 16.79 gallons in at my last fillup.

Multiply THAT times 60 mpg...

Don't ever suggest that I am lying again.

I don't take that kindly, junior...

__. Hey, VW#3! Good job on your 900 mile tank -- it feels great to get this econ, doesn't it?

__. On my last tank, the light came on at 872 miles indicated, but (although I drove another 34 or so miles), it would only hold 15.02 gallons. That's ventectomied, shaken, dripping down the fender, pure fuel with no foam up to the neck, if-I'd-put-in-another-thimbleful-it-would-have-run-down-the-fender-too full. So, I'm beginning to think that my light's pessimistic. If I really had another 1.8 -- 1.9 gallons in the tank at 900, at 60 MPG, I could have done 1000 with about 40 miles to spare (but us grey-haired, broken down, old, cheap, retired guys who drive slow get VERY nervous about going down that low).

931 miles at the fill-up this morning. 15.788 gallons. Don't even have to try anymore. And my car isn't even fully broken-in - it has only 7200 miles on it.

1000 miles would make me nervous, though.

I can't believe you think we'd lie about it

Well boys and girls, I got to wondering why somebody on this forum would be so immature as to accuse fellow members of lying.

To be honest, it's been bothering me ever since it happened.

I started digging around, and I think I found answers to TWO questions.

1. Why is aimeizy getting such crappy mileage?

2. Why is aimeizy suggesting that mature veterans would be lying?

Here's what I found:

From aimeizy's profile, and I will let it speak for itself...

Mods - de-badged, k&n air filter, 2.0 MAF, removed snow-screen, pioneer premier head unit w/two 12in kicker comp subs & kicker 400x1 amp, boston acoustic coaxils, zimmerman cross-drilled rotors w/mintex pads

mileage - who knows?

mods continued - kamei sportgrile, 17in mille miglia action sports wheels w/toyo proxe fz4 215/45/17 tires, smoked blinkers & side-markers...

Now, I know that Fred frowns on calling R*ce, but I've alway called 'em like I see 'em....

Have a nice day boys and girls.

Don't want to flame anyone, but I am still on the tank that the car came with when new, 2 weeks ago. I've gone 800km (which I believe is 500 of your earth-miles) and there's over 1/8 tank still indicated.

Plus, I've been driving it "hard" in the city and in 4th on the highway, as per break-in procedures.

500 miles is a breeze. I can't see how 8-900 could be that hard.

Hey, someone should see if the bolt pattern on those original Beetle steelies is 5x100; then you could try for 1100 with these skinnny tires and small(er) contact patch.
