1989 Jetta body with a 1986 1.6 NA engine odometer says 214,000 miles
The red light in my dash with the battery icon started to come on yesterday. It lights up, but dimly, just before a shift or when the engine is running higher rpms. Sorry, no tachometer on this beast so I can't put a number to it. It drives normally and doesn't seem to be effected by the number of accessories that are on.
I had a similar problem with a work truck a few years ago. That time, the rpm range where the light lit kept creeping down over the course of a couple weeks. It was a bad alternator on that truck.
I think I know where to start. I'll be taking the alternator out and have it tested at the local parts store. Any other common causes for the light?
Maybe this is another thread, but the yellow glow plug comes on intermittently too. It is usually but not always dim. It has done this for years, but doesn't seem to effect the ultra-high performance of this car. Are my glow plus on when the light is lit or is it indicating something else?

The alternator is bad. There is a little play in the bearings or bushings and it failed the test at the parts store. But...
The backside of my alternator looks different from the one in the parts store catalog. There is a plug on the wiring harness that just sticks into the contacts and is held by a metal clip.
Mine:

Plug:

Similar to every alternator in the catalog:

I fixed your pictures for you...

That style plug and alternator you have came on the earlier MK1 vehicles. (1976-1984)

MK2 (1985-1992) alternators look like this... is this the style alternator you are seeing that is getting pulled up at the parts stores?

Just have them search for an 1983 or 84 Jetta or Rabbit alternator instead and you will find the style you need.
