my son ran my A4 dry last week. It took a loooong time to prime that pump. I would not risk running your tdi dry.
No worries, I have a PD and an in-tank fuel pump:) I ran it dry once upon a time, fill was 17.3. I actually stalled 1.5miles from the fuel station, added 32oz PSS and got her started again.

Won't do it again though, picking up a 2gal diesel jug this week for my next go round at 1k miles:cool:

Finally made it!

Just got in from filling up. 816.5 mi on 16.300 gal. = 50.09 mpg. I've only had the car (his) for about 2.5 months, but I'm gradually getting the hang of the mileage game. I've gotten it up from 45 at first. I could have gotten in to the 800-mile club a little over a month ago (16.521 for 793.6) but chickened out since I was in downtown Dallas.

I did 802, once and then....

my wife made me drive straight into the very next station to fill up. I never told her the entire trip that I had a spare gallon in the trunk.

802 on one tank using Mikey's vent trick.

Good for you guys. My '06 will never see 800. Probably the best I'll ever do is to hit 700 if I fill to the brim and have a tail wind all the way.
But, as long as I'm hitting 50mpg plus/minus, I'm not complaining.

With my 05 Passat TDI, the best I have ever seen is just over 700 miles. To chicken to go any further. I am pretty happy with this however!

OK I'm now in the 800-mile club :) And I still had at least two litres left in the tank.

Miles: 850.3
Gallons: 60.23 litres (13.2487 = imp gallons, 15.911 = us gallons)
Model Year: 2000 (early)
Model: Passat 1.9TDi 115hp PD
Tranny: Manual 5-gear
Fuel Type: ULSD

Reserve light came on at 797 miles.

Was doing better in the first half of the tank compared to the second half, the first half of the tank was in relatively warm weather (mostly around 10-13 c), with little traffic, while the second half was colder weather, near freezing, windy, and much worse traffic. At the half-way point the computer was claiming 66.3 imperial mpg, and at the end was claiming 64.7 mpg. Hand-calculated figure is 64.1, which is only 1% out.

There were at least two litres remaining in the tank when I filled up judging by the previous tank (62.33 litres fill).

I've gone 803 miles before the light came on again. This is my 2nd tank in a row of going 800+ per tank.

Tank #1: I say tank #1 just for reference. I babied it (easy on pedal, coasting, between 65-70 on highway) and got 800.4 miles and 50.29MPG

Tank #2: I drove it like I wanted (medium acceleration, 75+ on highway, and a couple pedal to the floor stunts to pass in traffic). That one netted 735 miles and 45.56 MPG.

Tank #3: Back to driving just like tank #1 but I added 8ozs of Power Service from the silver container. This is the first time I have ever run it. It makes a bold claim on the bottle of 8% MPG improvement. I figured most of the guys at the top of the monthly mileage numbers are running it so I would give it a try to see if I notice a difference. When I pulled up to the house tonight it was just rolling over 200 miles on the trip and its still on full...

My needle doesn't move until 225 miles when I drive it like I stole it, lately it's about 275-300 miles and 350 on the 7/8 mark, 550-600 at the half. I use to be lucky to see 450 at the half, 500 was a joyous occasion...now 500 is meh and 650 is the new goal:cool: Satisfaction...I can't get no.

So share please! What has changed? Something other than just driving style? Why so much better now?

I got a Scangauge II and re-learned how to drive my car. I drive faster than I use to when I was trying to get great mileage, and I'm getting about 5-8mpg better...and it started when it was still under 40*. I can only imagine what spring weather will bring. I use to use cruise at 60mph on the highway, driving like a granny around town and get a max of 48 49mpg...and required a lot of patience. Now I do better and don't feel like I'm getting my teeth pulled.

I pulse & glide(in and out of gear depending on the situation), I try to observe the speed limits, going no more than 10mph over only when the flow of traffic dictates it. Typically I live in the right lane doing about 55-75mph in 5th gear. Around town I get into 4th as soon as possible and P&G, on backroads I pretty much stay in 4/5th at the speed limit 40-50mph gliding for long distances in neutral. Some people believe gliding in neutral with the engine on is extremely dangerous, so do it at your own risk. I have yet to encounter any problematic situations caused by neutral gliding. Of course you have to pay full attention to your surroundings while driving, not doing so is the primary cause of an accident.

Thanks for the tips. I have no problem with neutral coasting when I feel the situation is appropriate. I have been thinking about the scangauge but just didnt think it would be worth the $150. I am going to rethink that decision.

It pays for itself:cool:

Figure this, I use to get about 43-45mpg on average...say 44 * 16 = 704mpt, now I'm averaging 51mpg * 16 = 816mpt. 112 miles more per tank, based on 44mpg that's 2.54g so 2.54*$3.999=$10.15 per tank savings, I paid $139.95 on special for my SGII, so it will take me 14 tanks at my current mpg to pay for the SGII...only 10 tanks to go. Of course I drive like 44k miles per year, so I realize the savings much faster, damn at my current mpg I'm paying $3450 per year in fuel:eek:

I find very few instances where rolling in neutral seems to make any real sense. LikeA4's mileage boost is both notable and commendable but for coasting scenarios I find rolling in gear anywhere under ~1800 rpm adds very little drag on the engine (that is, the drop in speed is minimal -- situation dependent of course....).

You are likely aware already, but note that TDI engines use fuel to maintain idle while in neutral, but if you are in gear and the rpms are above idle (>903), your fuel use is a big, fat, Greek zero :D Consider that next time you get ready to shift to neutral for fuel economy reasons.

I have noticed this is a topic of some debate in other threads. I realize that until I get a Scan Gauge I am just not going to know what is best for my daily commute.

I do both. Coasting in gear is not always better, the distance you can coast in neutral is much longer on most stretches and the fuel required to constantly get back up to speed coasting in gear cancels out the zero use. I've done both and found that using both in the right situations yields the best #'s. I've seen 70MPG over 50 mile trips using neutral coasting, best on in gear only was about 58mpg. 40mph and under are great speeds to coast in neutral, the low wind resistance allows you to roll for long distances at speed without having to accelerate often. When rolling in neutral using the highest gear to accelerate is not best either, use the gear that keeps you in the power band and gets you back up to target speed the fastest. My gauge is by speed 20-30mph 3rd, 30-45 4th, 45+ 5th.

Of course do what you feel works for you, this is best in my experience. YMMV

Thanks for the gear/speed tips they will come in handy when I am in town.

I have a 1 mile long stretch that is 40MPH, 5 miles of 45MPH and the rest is 70MPH speed limits on my daily commute (2 stop signs and 3 stop lights). Both the house and work are pretty close to the intersate so any coasting in or out of gear are 5th gear situations.

It seems now that if I keep it to 70 or less and come up to speed fairly easy I can get the 800+ out of a tank with regularity. This is my first tank using the PS additive. When I got home today the OD reads 407miles and the fuel needle is still closer to 3/4 than 5/8 so I might be on a personal best tank. I will know for sure when it crosses 1/2.

awesome! I had something weird happen today. I parked and my needle was between 3/4-7/8 at 374 miles, I got in and started driving and the needle was between 1/2-5/8... I thought someone siphoned fuel, but the needle went back down while driving, just weird. My car played April fools on me:p

I did it! 831.8 miles on my last tank of fuel. I filled up with 15.909 gal to achieve 52.284 mpg. I'm very happy with myself! I'm having more fun driving slower and seeing how many miles I can squeeze out of it than I did just "driving fast" to get home an entire 5-10 minutes faster.

Some great info above! I also turn my engine off when I'm stopped at a long light, glide as much as possible and (as someone here put it) press on the accelerator like there is a raw egg between your foot and the peddle.

You should be, thats great. I hope to do that well on this tank. 495 at 1/2...

It sure is a better game to play than fighting all the crazy drivers on the way home like they are in the draft at a NASCAR race. I have a much better 'tude when I get home.

I was able to get 800 out of this tank, the reserve light went on at 768 miles and I can usually drive 80 miles minimum on reserve. So I filled the tank and got 15.68\gals in it ...I've easily put 17.2\gals on total empty so ...yes I made the 800 mile club with ...205,000 miles on the car.

Another 800 mile tank, getting close to 900:

Driver: MikeMars
Miles: 887.5
Gallons: 61.57 litres (13.5435 = imp gallons, 16.2651 = us gallons)
Model Year: 2000 (early)
Model: Passat 1.9TDi 115hp PD
Tranny: Manual 5-gear
Fuel Type: ULSD

Trip computer claims 66.0 imperial mpg (a PB, previous was 64.7). Calculating by hand shows 65.4 imperial mpg (which is about 1% less than the computer).

Reserve light came on at 822.9. I didn't intend to drive quite so far beyond the reserve, but I was flustered about a break-in to the car this morning and forgot about the fuel level until I was on the motorway (and it was then too late to do anything about it). I have to confess to drafting a heavy-goods-vehicle until I came off the motorway in order to avoid running out (running out on the motorway is an offense with a fine here).

__. That's *good* mileage on a big car with an engine with higher HP that we have in N America. To get this kind of mileage with the traffic density in the UK is really very good. Congrats!
