From the Flying J outside Davenport IA (exit 292), to Fowlerville MI, and back to the same Flying J.

The only two previous 50-mpg tanks I've had were five years ago.

Just fueled up yesterday at 845 miles, and could have went a bit more. I think I'll try for 900 next. :D

My first 800 mile tank was 850.3!! Wow. Just had to adjust the foot a little to get that. I was getting anywhere from 625 to 680.

Started working the night shift also, so I have a lot less traffic to contend with and I leave extra time to get there.

I got my first 800+ tank on 6/20/10. Went 807.4 miles on 14.557 gallons for a 55.5 mpg tank.

Before my Rocket Chip RC2 tune I was lucky to get 45 mpg.

Asterisk, All,
Where can I find the rules for measuring and posting good mileage figures? Also anyone have a procedure for starting once fuel is depleted? (If I stop immediately on the first "missing", will it start on it's own once fuel is added to the tank?) I have a Jetta 2004 with manual tranny.

Your 2004 Jetta has a lift pump in the fuel tank -- so you do not have to worry about priming the line and sucking fuel all the way from the tank to the engine compartment like in previous TDI models.

If you want to try for an 800-mile tank, you have to:
1) Fill to the brim, the top of the filler tube, and give your Jetta a hard hip-check to "burp" any air that might be in the tank. Then see if you can't add a few more ounces.

2) drive mostly at night, on lightly traveled roads or on Interstate highways, at a constant speed of 65 or less.

Good job on the high mileage numbers, scy. Maybe this is a little nit-picky, but I think you disqualified yourself on that tank of fuel. You might wanna try asking the rules committee :)eek: there are rules?!? :p ) whether they can accept the non-standard fill method you used -- IIUC what you posted here, it was not exactly kosher  ;)

Thanks for the info. I'll run it dry without fear when I get close to any notable mileages. I didn't know if there were any specific rules to follow before posting to prove that the results were for real. I regularly exceed 900 miles per tank. My average MPG over the last 10 - 12K miles has exceeded 56MPG. My high so far is 61.25. Still trying for 1000 per tank and could have done it with the 61.25 (973 miles) as I still had more than a gallon left in the tank.

805.4 miles using 16.1 gallons of B5 from Safeway, no additives. Typical daily commute ~50:50, Hwy:City; 42miles/day. 119K on the clock. '03 w/RC2 and Sprint 520s. The ScangageII mpg really jumps up when I hit the brand new asphalt on I-5 through Fife, WA. I try to use the original brakes as little as possible and I still enjoy the RC Tune from time to time.:D

WooHoo! 812.9 miles on 15.5 gallons. First tank since the ventectomy and 0.658 gear. This was logged at 76/80mph (guessed actual/indicated on speedo) on interstate during my 204 mile round-trip daily commute.

My longest run is 820 miles on 58 liters of diesel. That is 4.4l/100km or 53.5 mpg. Achieved last summer in my Passat wagon 1.9tdi 4-motion, manual 5-speed. Very careful driving, not above 53 mph, coasting in neutral down reasonably hills and in gear at steep hills. Almost no breaking at all.

Just ran another 835 miles before the light came on.... I'm vented. I run mostly back roads 45-60 mph. Has anyone ever run out of fuel trying for this thing? What are the dangers of doing harm trying for this?

I finally did it. Got a new RC4 tune. with my Heavily modified BEW, I pulled out an 800 mile tank.

Didnt really try until I hit 400 miles at 5/8 tank. this was about 90% highway.

834 miles on 15.8 gallons. I was slightly disappointed, though I did speed a little on this tank.

I FINALLY @#%$% MADE IT!!!!!!

822.3 Miles
15.73 Gallons

Fuel Light did not even come on till just shy of 800 miles - Had some around town miles so next is the 900 mile tank. Car was not PINNED on Empty, so I know i could have easily got 850 miles. So the next tank going 50 more miles will be cake!

What a difference the RC3 & Nozzles made on fuel mileage.

What speed are you driving at on the highway? I have RC3 and 520 nozzles and I am getting around 47mpg if I am diligent! I am thinking about taking a long road trip, set the cruise control to 70mph and see what happens.

Finally hit the mark for the first time ever. Have had this car 12 years..... got a really easy commute to new job. all highway 4 am in the morning and after rush hour. 103 miles each way. nav shows 53 average mph cruise set to 57 so pretty much all highway got 811.3 miles on 13.935 gal.

Driving 1236 miles a week gives plenty of practice to improve milage driving habits. not easy to be the guy holding up traffic when usually I'm complaing about the slow person in the slow lane holding up traffic...lol

Wow. That's impressive! I drive 102 miles each way for my daily commute but I run at about 75MPH. The best I've gotten on a tank is 54.4MPG, with a 54.1 as well as several 52+'s in the past few tanks.

I don't think I could drive at 57MPH as I would get flat run over! I get passed more than I pass as it is at 75MPH.

This is the first tank I paid attention to keeping a decent speed. MOST of the tank was all highway as I am on the road for work. On GPS I kept the car at 70-72 tops, tried to keep it at 68 mph. I wanted one tank that was consistant to see what happened. Tank before It I broke 715 miles doing 75-80. At 70 MPH in basically the same car as me (mine has 186,000 miles) you should see 52-54 mpg. My air cleaner is new, fuel filter is new, tire pressure is 40 or so & I had my injection timing set. I am by no means a hyper-mile'r, I don't shut it off @ red lights - I drive it normal. Next tank I know I can get 900 miles by pulling my speed back to 70 and doing strictly highway. Good Luck!!!

Time after time I kept getting 600, 625, 670 mile tanks. I watched my speed (but not that guy holding up traffic in the right lane) and it made a HUGE difference. The vent-ectomy helps as it holds alot more fuel too. I wait till the pump stops - let the foam settle & fill it till I see it by the neck. Slowing down a hair, RC3 & Nozzels made a 200 mile per tank difference, filling up sometimes twice a week thats huge to me!!!!!

home is 6 miles no lights or stop signs 2 lane country road to turnpike entrance and work is 2 miles off turnpike nothing but interstate. Its just like others have said. the hardest thing to do is Drive slow..... i know what you mean about the getting passed. my normal driving is in the 75mph range around 43-44mpg is what I usually get. Tried to see what i could get in the wagon to much driving till empty with such a big tank. couldn't do it made half a tank gave up back to SPEEDING....and poor MPGs

First tank of gas in my 96 B4 800.5 miles. Was able to force 17gallons into it after filling it up so I'm sure I could have squeezed another 30ish miles out of her. This was doing nothing special and on snow tires. Usually drive 70-75ish.

After 4 tanks, I just joined the club...828 miles and 15.95 gal. Best I've ever gotten before this tank was 48 mpg but I bought my TDI a few months ago knowing my commute was going to change to 100 miles a day. Stock engine with blocked up grills for winter, 700 miles worth of work commuting and the rest running around town.

On the highway I run at about 73 mph the way to work and about 67 mph on the way home.
