It only took 15.8 gallons to do it. I have heard on people putting in 16, so I would have made it even if I hadn't put in 2 gallons to guarantee that I wouldn't run out of fuel. I put in 2 gallons, when 74 miles, and then put in 13.8 gallons.

All high way, well as much as DC rush hour gets, 60 mph, no AC, B20, ALH with 138k on it.

How many members do we have in the 800 club?

I just travelled 801.1 on 15.3 gallons and my low-fuel chime hadn't gone off yet. I was dying to take it to the edge but the next day's trip to work would take me into higher diesel prices for the fillup. My last 5-6 have been very near 800 on both sides. To achieve this, I've been driving in a less-spirited fashion, coasting in gear to stops and down reasonable inclines, and lowering my top speeds (not going over 65). My ~45 mile commute has ~35 stopping 'opportunities' and speed limits ranging from 35 to 65.

853 miles on 16.7 gals. Give me a little break, its a PD! :) Like he said ^^^ coast in gear, slow down >65mph, easy on the go pedal. Amazing since my commute has dropped to 7 miles each way of city traffic. Though that last tank included a trip from G'ville to Jacksonville to pick my dad up from the airport.

tditom, the thread has been dead for a while. If you check, I posted in that thread my first 800 mile tank. I started this one for multiple reasons.
1. To see if there were any more than in the dead thread.
2. It gives people a chance to ask what we did to get there.
3. There was a lot of side talk going on in the other 800 mile club thread. I hoped that this would be closer to a me, here are my stats and driving conditions, with very little side bars.

That said, my first 800+ was 802.5 on 14.7 for something like 54 mpg.
The second reason has been more successful already. He posted his driving techniques, which will help people that are always complaining about not getting 50 mpg but insisting on going 75-80 mph.

Edit: The old thread has been bumped... There was a 3 month dead space though which is pretty much eternity on this board. It was also on the 2nd page of search, so it isnt super recent. Its last post was a couple of week ago.

I actually just did two 800 milers in a row! :)

824 miles on 13.87 gallons (record MPG)
and 803 miles on 14.90 gallons

The first tank was mostly at an indicated 56mph, and the second at an indicated 67mph.

Interesting, I just checked my commute which is 86 miles each way, and has only 10 stopping 'opportunities'.

Although that does not include the couple times a day that I usually stop on the freeway in traffic

Sweeps, what is your driving style? You seem to be getting better than average mileage from your car. That best tank is 59.4 mpg, thats extremely high for what these cars are rated. What are your shift points, terrain of your commute (hilly, etc.), percent highway, tire pressure, oil usage, fuel (bioD or D2), any congestion on the commute, general driving style, and other methods you use to concerve fuel?

I made it last summer on my way to Kansas...I made the same mileage as beloew and was loaded to the brim with cargo and intermittant A/C doing 65mph the whole way. That was on a stock motor no mods....

I think I could break 900 miles ar damn close to it now that I have some mods...I gained ~3-4mpg. Last 4 fillups have been over 700 miles ont he tank with the light just coming on....

I am eager for a reeeeeaaaalllly long road trip to test it out :)

That one tank is a rarity. I average 47-49mpg on my regular 70-75 mph freeway driving.

On that tank, I was driving at an indicated 56mph, with no traffic, and no wind that day. Outside temps were right around 65-70 degrees, so great for getting top mileage. Accelerations from stops were brisk, to get up to speed quickly. The terrain was pretty flat, some rolling hills. Always looking ahead, and keeping my distance from other cars.
Oil is 5w40 castrol syntec
Fuel is ULSD Shell D2 with PS added.
Tires are 40psi.
No A/C, windows closed.

This was not on my normal commute, but on a extended weekend trip on rural roads. I can't drive that slow on my commute, I'd get run over!

Syntax,
I had to drive like I had an egg under and on top of the accelerator for that. I kept it at 60, drove at off peak times, and it took 10 seconds in each gear to get up to that speed. I am thinking about mods too, which gave you the best economy improvements? I probably have to clean my intake, so that might help a little also. I would like to see a 56 mpg tank this year and maybe get to the 900 club.

I'm jealous... damn the automatic machine! I can usually break 600 to a tank running straight dino. If I'm greasing (multiple fill-ups on grease) I can clear 2500 to a tank of diesel driving to/from work mostly. But I suppose that would be cheating huh? ;)

Well, honestly I used cruise control most of the way. BUt on the reurn trip home... I left St. Louis and sdrove straight thruough to Philadelphia some where outside of Harrisburg I threw a check engine light (Turns out if was a fuel temp sesnor) I was just at about 800 miles on the tank....I ended up refueling because it was very late I'd been driving all day and I dont think the GF would have appreciated us running dry...I had no idea there was another fuel station a few miles up the road.

So, that being said I was doing 70mph steady on cruise but with ocasional jaunts to 80mph. A/c was on the whole way home and I had additional cargo then when I left. The difference in mpg was negligable and I would have made the 800 club for the 2nd time...but I knew I could/can make it.

I only have the mods listed below in my signature at the moment...but that will change soon. I got chipped looking for an additional boost in power...with no expectations in increased economy. That being said....I have seen a ~3-4mpg increase since chipping. I do not drive it like a race car (all the time) but I do exercise the turbine! My average speed driving is 70mph to/from work with about 65-70 miles round trip.

If you do decide to get chipped, nozzles etc. Do go in expecting an increase...but as long as you dont change your driving habits style alot your economy should stay around the same or slightly better.

Nick

Good job on the high mileage numbers, scy. Maybe this is a little nit-picky, but I think you disqualified yourself on that tank of fuel. You might wanna try asking the rules committee :)eek: there are rules?!? :p ) whether they can accept the non-standard fill method you used -- IIUC what you posted here, it was not exactly kosher  ;)

Perhaps you can safely secure a ~gallon fuel container in the trunk to cover your fear of running dry and avoid the non-approved fill sequence and the peppering of your fuel records with asterisks.

jetta, I would have made it.. and I know that it may not be accepted by some people. In my car, I have approximately 1 gallon left after I hit the 0 on the guage. I am still a member of the club... due to my 802.5 on 14.7 gallons. I was just interest in a list of people who have gotten there, and how they are driving to do it while avoiding too many or lengthy side bar conversations.

It was actually 828.8 miles on the odo when I fueled up. If you remove the 28 extra miles, plus .5 gallons (at 52 mpg, thats about right.. if not just a little shy of true), then I made 800 on 15.3. I know I can fit that much in my tank, I have personally fueled to 15.6

Jettajake..Ill take the astricks as well as the ribbing for it. It dont hurt me any and Ill get a good laugh out of it.

9 tanks with the low fuel chime on after 800 (Max was 978.2)
11 tanks over 800 miles (Max was 1080.6), another 6+ in the 790's

Congrats to those of you with Automatics and/or MKV's - You've got an uphill battle (so to speak) compared to us A4-5M guys.

Well I just made my best tank so far, the low fuel light came on at 814 tonight. So do ya'll think I can make it to 900. This is the first tank I have checked after doing the 5th gear swap to the .681. I have been running around 55 to 60 most of the time just like I did on my last 800 mile tank when it was stock. I think I went 828 miles on 15.35 gallons then if I remember right, the low fuel light came on that time at around 778. I plan on make a mileage run at about 65 to 70 MPH after this one. I was hoping that I could get the same mileage at those speeds as I did before the 5th gear swap at 55 to 60. This is such a wonderful site. I LOVE MY LITTLE BUG !!!!

800 per tankful is the norm for me with my personal best at 851. I think 900 is quite doable too. Maybe this year???? :)

Well
I made 911.4 miles on 16.27 gallons which is 56 MPG only about 2 MPG better then with the stock 5th gear. So now in the 900 mile club. Now comes a tank at 65 to 70 MPH to compare. Also just wondering what is the most fuel you have ever put in your 14.5 tank. Mine has had the ventectomy done which makes it easier to fill for sure. Just would like to know how much fuel I had left?

Jealous!

I'm jealous! I have a 2005 old body Jetta and was getting 450 miles/tank (14 gal tank). This is without prompting the low fuel light to turn on, so still having a fair amount of gas left. I don't know why, but for the last few weeks my economy has gone down and I can squeeze about 380 miles to the tank. 800 miles apparently will only happen in my dreams!

__. JRX, you gotta do some things ....

1) Do a search on "ventectomy" and take the silly valve out,

2) Read and implement the tips you'll find in the threads in this forum, and

3) Cut the rope on that big anchor you're dragging around!

Bora, I knew you were, but the old thread had a dead space of about 3 months. Just wanted to revive the topic.

To the people who are putting in 17 Gals.. do you have copies of the receipts?? Id love to see one (with all pertinate info blacked out of course). My guage beeps at 14.1 gallons, and reads empty at 14.7-15 gallons.. vented to the top. I literally fill to the brim, and I have a ventectomy. Am I going to have to remove my float and check to make sure that I dont have a ton of crap in the bottom of my tank or check to see if my fuel sender is bad? If what you guys are saying is true... I should be capable of 900 mi tanks easily with my mileage.
