I guess I'll add my post here. 718 AUG/07 and 725 OCT/07 16.238 gal and 16.234 gal. Not quite sure how much was left, but one thing left me thinking.

If one were to push the limit to where the tank was empty and was running on fuel in the pump, lines and filter. When they filled up they would have a better average MPG for that tank, and then a worse average for the next one. Just my anal retentive mind always looking at all the angles.

717 miles on 15 gals of pump diesel. 700 is pretty common driving over posted highway speeds. 750 was my best with 14.7 gals, but I was watching how fast I drove.

Not really. As long as the tank is filled to EXACTLY the same level (hence the recommendation to "fill to the brim") each fillup, the first tank full CANNOT affect the results of the second.

If the tank were to be empty and the pump, lines and part of the filter, then when you filled the tank those items would just be air. After you started the car that small amount of fuel would be taken from the tank, essentially reducing the amount of fuel you put in the tank.. making fuel economy figures better that tank, and worse the next. (Its a tiny fraction, but it still exists the possiblity. Like I said.. my anal retentive mind thought of this)

I stand corrected, The fuel consumption calculations DO assume the fuel lines/pump/filters contain the same amount of fuel both before and after fueling. I can't think of a way to accurately measure the fuel in the lines used just as the engine dies from lack of fuel but I would be suprised if it is more than about a half cup. (The lines/filters/pumps need not be completly dry for the engine to die - SOME fuel remains in the low spots). There are 4 cups in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon so a half cup is about 1/32 gal. About 0.03 gal, less than the rounding error if you record fuel used to the 0.1 gal (tenths)

I did it Finally!!! I am currently working on 800 miles for this tank. I think it is going to be close. Right now I am on pace for 830 so we will see.

I forgot to take a pic of the MFD of the MPG but it said 43.6 MPG and when I divided my 16.130 Gallons when I filled it was 44.3 MPG.

Who said Big, Heavy Cars cannot get good gas mileage. :)

Finally did it: 712.7 mi out of 15.487  gallons for approx 46mpg.

This required me upshifting at 2000rpm and not driving on the freeway over 65mph except for passing.

Best Tank Yet

I just filled up. 16.5 Gallons and 815 miles. It seems to do best at 58MPH indicated. I drive about 60 miles daily round trip to work and it's all flat driving. I try to rev to 3000 out of first and second and then slow the accelleration in the higher gears. It is a great little engine. 68000 miles with no problems.

800.2 Miles!!! Sweet!! I love my Passat

Well, I did it, 800.2 miles on a tank. The MFD said 46.1 MPG.
My math says the same. 17.358 Gallons of ULSD D2.
It took me a week to complete this trek at 70 miles to work each way.
I do not think I will see 800 again for a while. It is getting too cold now.

Finally made it--on B100 too!

Well, just had the TB done and intake cleaned (thanks oldpoopie)!

Loaded up the car for a road trip down to California. Put an extra 16 gallons of B100 in the trunk for the trip home and took off. 80% highway following posted speeds (55-70 depending on the stretch of road). Last hundred miles was hilly, twisted slow going or city stop-and-go.

Finally made it in. Had 700.3 miles and put in almost exactly 15 gallons of B100--it's hard to get an exact value when you are pouring out of fuel cans...

[edit 11/14]That 15 gallons of added fuel got me 703.4 miles on the way back[/edit]

Aah, finally I can post in the 700 mile club. I managed 3 days of driving, 725 miles on 15.7 gallons of BP diesel, with 1/3 botttle of sandyne. 45.97 mpg is not bad, not great either, actually it is for me considering that I was averaging between 70-80 mph.

First 700mi tank and best fuel efficiency since I've owned the car (bought it @ 52k). Could have eeked another 40-50 miles as it appears that I still had a gallon or so in the tank. Recently cleaned the intake and EGR, replaced TB and MAF. Gained 4mpg on these maintenance items alone. Just put a set of Continental ContiPros on, running them at 48psi all around. Cummulatively, all these little items add up! BTW, I run PowerService additive every other tank usually...

700+ miles on a tank

48 PSI? Holy cow Batman!!   Seriously, I think that's bit on the high side. I run them according to the recommended pressure. I got 688 miles on a tank the other day running on something like 28 front 31 rear kind of. I now have 33 on the front, 39 for the rear. drive 60-70 but I really ripped it on the Southbound Merritt last nigh going up to 90 MPH - needless to say, a Jetta was following me, I don't think it was a TDI though, since he/she could not keep up. I was running on empty and was not a full tank so I did not care at all. This morning I filled it up, and it cost me over $45 dollars at $2.34 a gallon here in Northern NJ. I am shooting for at least 700 miles on this tank, maybe even even 750. I need to baby the car to get 750 but there are so many wreckless drivers on my way from Connecticut to New Jersey, sometimes I am forced to push it (like you're on the left lane and some idiot think it can shoehorn itself between a car in the right lane and mine). Oh, and Connecticut drivers rarely signal when changing lane.[/quote]

I'm at 705 miles with alittle less then 1/4 tank. I'm sure tomarrow' drive will trigger it to come one.

834 miles on my last tank 16.4 Gallons 50.85 mpg

75% In town
15% Highway mostly 60~65 mph
10% (first 100 milesish) driving "like an American"
Is there an 800 Mile club? I was shooting for 900, but chickened out when I saw air bubbles in the fuel line . . .. But now I see them even when the tank is nearly full . . . .

First 50 mpg Trip

Just completed a 2000+ mile trip with my 06.5 TDI (approx 10K miles on the odo). The car has exceeded my expectations for economy. Having tracked every gallon thru the engine, overall is 45.13 mpg. For the last trip the average was 50.05, with one tankful at 50.15. The interesting thing is that the hi-mileage tank was at a near-constant 70 MPH, whereas the previous tanks were at 65 MPH. I suspect the 6th gear RPM of 2300 at 70 MPH is nearer the peak of the torque curve.

1st 700 mile tank.

2005 Jetta TDI wagon, 22,000 miles.

Just did my first ventectomied tank of fuel.

700.2 miles on 15.7 gallons for 44.6 mpg. It was mixed driving including a lot of short trips, some decent length drives and a 300 mile freeway trip over the Sierra Nevada on I 80 where I spent an hour in 10-25 mph traffic.

The gauge was centered on the red line just above the empty line when I got fuel and the low fuel light had been on for 8 miles. If the forum wisdom of 16.7 gallon capacity is right for my car, that means my light came on with about 1.2 gallons left.

I have a 1900 mile all free flowing highway trip coming up in February. That's an opportunity for a couple of 800 mile tanks.

Just had my first 700 mile tank!!!:D

701.6 on 14.6 Gal for 48.05 MPG. My 2nd best MPG so far, but longest tank to date.

Trip was mostly highway arround TX, only got stuck in Dallas rush hour for a little over half an hour, about 30 miles i think. Was driving 65-70mph on the trip.

TDI = lol got to love it.

Out of the 650 Auto tranny Club, now 700

I just got 717.3 on my last tank when I filled up it was 15.959 I was going to drive home from work and try to milk out some better mpg. but we have possible snow in the Washington DC area and even flurries can cause big traffic problems here. :( Most of the folks haven't driven in snow much around here, so I played it safe and filled at a local station here at work. New Nokian i3 tires I run at 45 front and 48 rear and just using the scangauge carefully is what has brought my usual mpg of 42 up to the 44.95 mpg I got on this one, not bad for a 2004 Golf Auto tranny PD. :D Now onto try for an 800 mile tank!

I just had my light come on at 704 miles and filled up 10 miles later with 15.089 gallons and 6 oz. of PS. for a remarkable 47.25 mpg driving on winter diesel and crappy highways in NNY. highways i would set the cruise at 70 and surface rds at 60.

My question is when does your fuel light come on and do you ignore it? Mine comes on around 14.25 gallons. I drive 200 miles per day for work which my best tank was 686 miles and filled up 14 gallons.

When your fuel light comes on, you should have 1.9 gallons left in the tank. At your 49 MPG, that's another 93 miles! I wouldn't push it that far, but I have driven 80 miles past the fuel light.

What type of car ?

The A5 (e.g. 06models) takes somewhere between 15.2 and 15.7Gal until empty. As the in-tank fuel pump is lubricated and cooled by the fuel around it some people advise against running it completely empty.
