We did it! 745 on 15 gal. AC on, wife & kid, camping gear, mountain passes, passing in the mountains, B .205's, from our trip to Yosemite. Near stock 2000 Golf GLS w/ 5 spd. 54,000ish miles on the odo.
Normal duty for this car is 90% city =@ 42-44 mpg.

Clean intake and new coolant temp sensor HAD to help.

Yay!

Still have not made it. 658 miles on 13.745 = 47.8 mpg. I make it to the 700 mark sooner or later. Know she will do it, but fill up when it is getting down there.

Sorry, I just could not bring myself to let it get any lower! I filled up when the needle was almost to the last white line before empty and put in 13.6 gals and only went 696.7 miles! I guess I could have pushed it the other 3.3 miles but I don't like to get below 1/4 tank if I can help it.

At this rate I will not get into the 700 mile club. :(

pugman,

you'll make it. just head out on a highway and set cruise at 55 or 60. i was getting well over 60mpg when i did that last weekend. even if you only use 12 gallons, that's still 720mpt.

What do you guys mean by "venting". I just bought a 2001 Beetle TDI, haven't done a mileage run yet (but I will soon). Everyone uses the term venting, I just don't know what it is.

The fuel tank has a device to stop you putting too much fuel in, this is because the same tank is used for gas. To get a couple of gallons extra in you push a tab to the left of the filler hole. This vents the tank removing trapped air. As such you can get 1-2 gallons extra.

Some people do a ventectomy (perminatly removing the guts of the vent) Have a look HERE

Well, I made it in my 1985 Jetta 1.6TD. 700.0 miles on 12.57 gallons. Didn't even get down into the reserve. I'm not real sure about my tank capacity vented. I think about 15.5 gallons. The hardest part is waiting that long to check my mpgs (55.6 on this tank).

Just did 730 on the interstate from Salt Lake to Ellensburg, WA (near Yakima). 65MPH on cruise, 44 lbs in tires, air cond on recirc #2 (it was 90 -100 degrees outside), venting to max, about 53 MPG. Light came on at 702 miles. This is an 03 Jetta Wagon, manual tranny. Now I'd try 800 but hate driving under 60 MPH!

If only, I never drive that FAR!

I did get 530 miles while being at the one tick below half way on the gauge.

Devil around here is the turnpike where it kills you to go slower then 70mph.

See if I go 75mph I go 1.25 miles a minute vs. 60 mph at 1 mile a minute.

15 more miles an hour over times 4 adds up to 60 miles or another hour less of driving time had I did 60mph the entire way.

It does pay to drive faster time wise but obviously poorer fuel economy but how much is your time worth?!?

:p I'll know I'll be in the 700 club soon though!

shouldn't a wagon vented get like 18gals into the tank? even at the fuel light you should have used 16gals, and at 703miles that would make 43mpg... just wondering how you were getting 53mpg in your calculations?? but congrats on making the 700 mile club either way.

I didn't get to 700mi but I would've been there. I finally got my goal of over 50mpg at 52.8mpg on my last tankful (I regularly fill up every two weeks). I figure now I can drive the normal road raging ways around the beltway in the Washington DC area (if anyone knows this area, it's practically the only way to drive around here). But my cheapness was way too hard to overcome. Today, I still drove conservatively and kept my speeds no more than 70mph and drove around 65mph. Damn my "frugality." :)

I found the receipt from the fill up in Ellensburg, WA and it was 13.8 gal (x 53mpg = 731.4 miles). I checked the owners manual and (although its for a sedan not a wagon) it shows like 15.1 gal as fuel capacity. If it really holds 18 gal I should have no problem making the 800 club! As I recall, I had to push the venting button like 6 times to get all the air out on fill up. Has anyone out there vented and had it overflow in hot weather?? Just curious.

If you haven't removed the venting button, you should do it. It's very easy to do. Makes pumping so much easier.

For my NB, I had to remove the hinge to pop the gas cover. Only issue not covered in that link.

check the July Monthly Milage Competition thread, or any of the other milage threads. they all have fill-up listings with 16, 17 and 18gals at a time for wagons. those guys are all venting, but many of them have made the 800, 900 and even 1000 mile club. good luck with it.

773.9 miles on 15.925 gallons. Thats a single tank topped off w/venting, and works out to 48.6 mpg. Great mileage but not ultra. It was almost rather stupid because I drove almost 100 miles after the light came on...eek!!

Just made it today at 703 and 14.3 gallons. I think it may have been a little more, as I can't remember if we vented that tank of fuel. It was still the OK state diesel that I had when I purchased the car last week. I know the first 400 were at 75 with the a/c going, and around 200 miles were city driving. I"m almost confident that if I slow it down and don't run the a/c, I should be able to hit the 800 mark. I didn't measure the tire preasure, but then again, we were running a slow leak in one tire all the way back from OK to IA. Not bad for a Beetle. I would upload the photo I took, but I haven't figured that out yet.

I did it again. It's not very hard to do it every tank now. 754 mile 14.422 gallons 52.28 MPG
Since I got the new engine (old story) my '06 doesn't seem to want to get much over 41 or 42. I don't drive like a maniac and most of my commute is freeway driving.
Granted, the engine only has about 4800 miles on it but my previous engine was getting a pretty consistent 45 mpg in city/highway driving before the dealership put a gun to its head.

I'll keep trying....

You should be able to do it if I can.

I got 700.7 on my last tank. I have not dont the ventoctomy, so thats not bad. I averaged 52.83 mpg on that tank! I was even using my AC. If you coast down these ozark "mountains" and drive around 55 it is amazing how much better you can do.

1057.3 miles @ 19.319 gallons = 54.73 MPG :D

It took me 8 years and 4 TDI's to finally manage a 1000+ mile tank in a vehicle other than a Passat Wagon  The secret.... driving under 65 MPH (Thanks Jonathan).
