UNBELIEVABLE!!! Of course no pictures, but the wife was there as my witness! I filled her up, drove my normal route to work and back, mainly backroads, for the past two days. Then, today we headed from Puyallup, WA to just outside of Portland, OR and back. 660 miles on the clock, as I nervously pulled in to my local Shell to fill up... My speeds today ranged anywhere from 60 to 80mph, with no babying or cruise at all.

I have no doubt, not even in the least bit, that she would have cleared the 700 mile mark, if she had stayed on the highway for the whole tank. She just pushed over the 4K mark on the odometer too. Can't wait to see if this improves as she gets older.

I dont know... maybe its just me, but its a little hard for me to believe, i've read some posts about people getting low 60mpg and unless you're going 10feet behind a semi at 55mph or downhill or what doing other crazy things i don't see how thats possible. I mean terrain is different on many trips, some are uphills some you have to slow down accelerate going 80mph surely will use more diesel having 1 or 2 other people with you all can take a hit on the mpg's. Maybe its just me, but i'm happy if i'm getting anything close to 40mpg

Well, 660/14.5 is 45.5mpg average for the tank. On all of our longer trips, couple hundred miles here or there, I've always averaged 47mpg during those also. On our next full tank highway trip, I'll be sure to post pics, but even those can be "fabricated".

Concerning non believers, what do I have to gain from lying about this? Some people on an internet forum thinking I'm cool? ;-)

Well there is nothing to gain just uuuhhhh aaaahh from people. I personally dont know anyone that takes their car to almost stopping on the highway without gas, unless you're carrying a gal of diesel in the trunk. Most people probably fill up their tanks with 1-2 bars remaining and then and then they guestimate how much more they could have pushed it based on how much fuel took to fill up to the first click, given the best optimum conditions. And then add that at to the current miles. Thats where i think the last 50-80 miles comes from. But then again i could be wrong, I know i've calculated this way a few times.

No, you're half correct. I sweated the last bar. One bar left when I pulled into the Shell station. I do fill up to the top of the neck though. That might be close to an extra half gallon. I guess the calculation should have been 660/15(ish). Either way, she would have easily cleared the 700 mile mark.

The area I was finishing the last 1/4 tank has stations galore, and my wife could see the boy in me coming out, so she gave me permission to go for it... ;-)

Im not sure why everyone gets so wound up these cars have lift pumps you run out you put some in and away you go...Ive been stretching tanks for 4 years and havent ran out yet..will i yah probably some day but im okay with that. My 2003 i ran 223 kms with the fuel light on. I ran 30+ kms on my 2011 with the 0 kms remaining up on the mfd but it never ran out probably was close but at least i know if i ever need to push it because i cant find fuel i can.

I watched a UK Top Gear episode and I think they drove their cars from somewhere in France back up to somewhere in Britain and had to do it in one tank. Towards the end Jeremy and Richard were well past 0 miles left on their remaining miles and tanks had said empty for quite some time.

I always get 600 plus on a tank, yesterday I got 662 and put in 14.4 gallons, it just went to 0 to empty but I understand it has like a gallon or so in reserve. I just broke the 5K mark last week. That comes out to just a tick under 46mpg. I have to admit I was cruising a little under my average of 75mph on the highway, probably about 70 average and 80% Highway, 20% city traffic. I"m pretty much happy with that! :D

I ran 48 on my last trip - with a DSG. Traditionally, I would have agreed with you. However, the numbers I'm seeing seem to discredit that theory.

Keep in mind, OP has a manual transmission not the DSG

I'm not positive, but with the CR and HPFP, there could be concern with running out if the hpfp continues to run for a short period of time with no diesel in it for lubrication.

Trips mean nothing...You pull in a 48 mpg tank not a 100 mile trip. I can pull in 60 mpg trip if i want doesnt mean i can do it for the entire 700 mile tank.

On my 400 mile trip (sea level up over 3600 ft, back down to about 1000 feet) when I was at 48, I drove about an average of 60. Its all 2 lane. I only got passed 3 times - a 911, a Vette, and Mustang. Oh, and several motorcycles......they love that highway...

Trips mean nothing...You pull in a 48 mpg tank not a 100 mile trip. I can pull in 60 mpg trip if i want doesnt mean i can do it for the entire 700 mile tank.
Like I said above, it was a 400 mile trip, not a one way "downhill" cruise on the back of a semi trialer...... I added several days of daily commute (lots of sport mode) and it dropped the ave down to 42 for the tank. If I'd driven the whole tank on the highway, I really can't say how high it would have gone - and dont know that I'll have the opportunity to see.

well like i said i havent see anyone post up a dsg that has got 47+mpg for the entire tank i never said it wasnt possible so do it and prove me wrong....Your tdi also has much smaller and lighter rims and tires so really im at a dissadvantage with my 17 inch rims and 225 tires.

More info: tires where all at 38psi (checked the night before the trip); the car had my wife, our daughter and I; empty trunk; and I went into 6th gear only two or three times, just while passing (I like to speed up quite a bit while passing, plus it's fun). ;-)

Goodness, are you sure that's a diesel you're driving?? :p

On a trip to the beach once I got about 47.something on an entire tank... but cruise control at 60mph to work once (over VA mountains, there are NO flat roads here haha) and got up to 58.4mpg... but then again, that's what the MFD said, and I believe that's always a little high.

Trips in the right places are easy to get high MPG out of, it's an entire tank that's rough! I've definitely never driven 660 miles, but I'd sure like to try :)

Mine is looking that way also.

Question for those that have had these for a while.....how accurate is the fuel guage? My Dodge trucks, to a tee, had about 1/3 tank left when the guage said 1/2 full. I never ran out of fuel (in fact, I have never run out of fuel in any vehicle...), so just trying to get a feel for it....

seems like the gauge is pretty accurate to me...pretty much like clock work 270-280 kms it knocks off the first 1/8th of a tank

2011 Golf dsg.....I've never gotten worse than 41mpg on a tank and that is with lots of city/stop and go driving plus highway mix. My highway mpg is easily in the 43-45ish range driving 70ish and this accounts for several spirited uphill runs per 50 miles which take approx 1mpg off of the avg mpg per run. I'm also in pretty hilly terrain so lots of up and downs.....and I don't hyper-mile or anything like that, though I am conscious of what it takes to get this kind of mpg, a lead-foot is never going to get 45mpg. On highway only trips driving 75mph my wife gets 43-44mpg per tank.

AC and driving habits play the biggest roll in tank per tank average.

I'm happy with my 45MPG that I seem to get tank after tank.

I should have clarified a bit - the 47.x was measured by the number of miles/gallons on a calculator... I believe my computer at the time said 50 or 51mpg. The 58.4 was straight computer (so in reality, maybe closer to 54ish). I never have taken the time to fill it up exactly that much though, so the beach trip numbers have a small amount of give.

@740GLE - that's about what I get on average, and I'm pretty happy with that as well!

Recently (since it's gotten hotter outside in VA) I've noticed a big dip in mileage, but only when driving home from work - 3:00 - 4:30pm. In the 5:30 - 7:00am it's still pretty nice and cool outside, would that be the issue?

I'm taking my first long trip on Friday. 715 miles total one way. I'm not banking on making it on a single tank (mainly because my wife has some sort of issue with stopping to pee every 50 miles), but I am going to see how far I can make it before the fuel light comes on. Not taking any chances on running out of fuel with the family in the car.

I do mostly city driving, and have a pretty heavy foot. I am seeing about 35mpg and as much as 37mpg. I think I will EASILY get 45mpg on the interstate at 70-75mph. Heck, even my old Jeep Liberty diesel managed 29mpg on an interstate trip once, and it was a 4 wheel drive SUV. The guy I sold it too hypermiled it across country and managed 38mpg running 60mph the entire way. Taped up seams, removed roof rack and radio antenna, and basically only stopped for fuel.

A large factor in fuel economy is the driver.
