I have a 2010 Jetta Wagon with Tdi and 6 speed. How often should transmission oil be changed. What specification oil should be used?

Assuming it's a 6 speed manual and not the 6 speed DCT, you want to use gl4 spec fluid. VW says it's lifetime, but definitely doesn't hurt to change it every 120k miles or so. Maybe a bit more often if you do a lot of towing, track events, or let a habitual gear grinder drive the car.

I'd say 100K miles is a max interval for the gear oil. There are two different oils for this transmission, you need to have your VIN run to get the correct one.

I figure better safe than sorry. I did it at 75k. I will at 150k. maybe excessive but I also stick with factory oil.

Yeah, I changed mine out at 100k and it came out looking pristine. A far cry from my uncle's Boxster tranny oil that we drained a few weeks prior that came out dark silver. That car had been a NYC rental in a previous life though. I never towed anything with my car and was pretty gentle on the gears.

I did mine about a year ago, around 250k km. It didn’t look dirty.
I used an oil from an aftermarket VW parts place. It was a weird name and A foreign language on rhw bottle but had the VW part numbers cross referenced on it.
GL4- 2.3L
G-052-171-A2 (g052-527-a2) these were the oem numbers I found.
Redline MT-LV also came up as a possibility, but like all good oil threads I’m sure there’s an opinion about it.
The price from the dealership was the same as from the parts place for me. Both needed to be mail ordered so it was easier to get it from Roseland with some other parts.

Thanks everyone. It is a 6 speed manual and has performed flawlessly as a 100 mile a day commuter that now has 280,000+ miles. I think I will stick to the GL4 spec.

I awapped mine at 160, its had an easy life, new vw branded fluid was noticeably lighter colored, but nothing alarming about the old stuff, no burnt smell or glitter
