30,000 miles, goodbye Hankooks

Ok, so I've had the car for 27 months and just hit 30,000. Took it to Dealer for all free-bee services etc. Background...when I first got car it pulled ever so slightly to the right....so little, that you could attribute it to the crown in the road, so I paid no attention to it. Got last 30,000 service and rotated tires as usual, but noticed that tires are a lot more noisy than they used to be (not that they were ever that quiet). So I went to local shop and put on lift only to discover that right side tires, both front and back had cupping on inside edge of tread. Checked alignment and found left rear toe was out, which came that way when I got car from dealer. So anyway, goodbye Hankooks and hello Michelin Primacy MXM4's. So far love new tires, whole different driving experience. Tracking true (after alignment)
and firm and quite ride. Wish I had checked alignment earlier and gotten rid of Hankooks sooner.

I'm not really aware.........

......of difference(s) between Mich MXM4 and MXV4..............

I am aware that - at 70,000 miles - my Gen7 Accord V-6 6M's 215/50 series MXV4 AW tires have 7/32 remaining. Seriously.

Plus they remain great in the wet. Tire Rack review reenforces this big time.

Are you on 17" or 18"
I have the 18" and am on the fence to get 17" dedicated snows or replace the 18" hankooks with new MXM4 or conti pure contacts.

We have been thrown into the depths of winter here in Minnesota so trying to make a decision.

How much quieter are the MXM4?
Have you had a chance to drive them in snow or on ice?

I can't wait to get rid of the Hankooks. 47,000 miles on them now and they are terrible in the rain. Anything over 50 MPH in heavy rain results in hydroplaning and TCS intervention (which is very smooth, by the way).

They're almost down to the wear bars... probably will be by 50,000 miles.

Impressive! Michelin's always seem to have some great tread life.

2002 TDI (ALH) with 513,000 km. First Owner and very happy... No Problems, never left us stranded on the Highway. Average useage is about between under 4 ltr. and 5 ltr. Normal longdistance travel: 4.1/100
The Michelins are always good for me... Last set I drove for 180,000 km.

I'm not waiting that long. I have 35,000km on them and they're getting tossed this spring. They are dangerous in the rain when I took them off and have little to no sipes lefts, only the "lands" that the sipes are moulded into.

I got my winters on right now.

I ditched my Hankooks at 31,000 miles for a set of Michelin MXV-4's.

The difference is amazing. Much quieter, handling feels tighter, plus they look good.

I ditched my Hancraps at 3,000 miles for a set of Michelin Primacy MXM4's. Much quieter, rides and handles like a different car... MUCH better. I have been tempted to put the Hancraps on CL, but I'm not sure if I want to do that to some poor unsuspecting person.

I got rid of mine at about 37K and got the MXV4 Primacy. Night and day... So much better... Now saving up to replace the ones on my JSW as well. At 22K and counting :)

Made it to 40k with the hannys and went conti pure contacts. Very happy with them after 5k. I need to see what they do in the snow though. Dry or wet roads are no problems at all

I tossed the Hankooks at 35K; went to Michelin's 90K tire and have NOT looked back. Excellent wear, and handling.

Hankooks removed at 22k miles. Replaced with ContinentalExtremeContact DWS, 235/45-18. After 16k miles, they do everything much better than the Hankooks.
Possibly not the quietest, though.

Herkguy,

I am considering an alternate set, but with only 4300 miles on the Hankooks, I can't really complain. They work well at full tread depth. That said, I replaced the tires on my E46 last January with Continental Extreme Contact DWS, and in my humble opinion they are hands down the best all season tire I've put on any of my vehicles. (Note, I am not comparing to snow tires, just to all seasons.) They are outstanding. Something to consider if you don't want to invest in two tire wheel sets here in MN. Roads are getting bad today, at least in my neck of the woods, 5 inches of fresh snow, with not much plow traffic. We were in mpls today and the got progressively worse as we left the metro...

Long wearing, but poor performing, tires is Satan's way of tormenting the morbidly thrifty.

Wife's 01 NB Sport went way over 100k on summer only use of the stock Michelins. The replacement Hankooks (S2s, I believe) are wearing FAST after two summers, and one is bad. Severe noise, and cupping that has completely worn away the inside of the tire. Switching to the winters has cured the issue. I'll be picking up a set of Michelins this winter to go on in the spring.

The best tires are the ones available at PepBoys, the likes of Difinity and Futura brands. Forget about Korean Hankook or French Michlins.

Thanks ABS,
Just picked up a set of new factory 17" take offs with new contiprocontacts,
for 800.00. I will run these over a few winters and then put some dedicated snows on them. With full tread they are an ok tire for winter, could not pass up the price. Should be quiet also.:)
I pulled the 18" hankooks off with 28k on them, they have even wear but are down to 6/32 and all the sipes are gone. I'll throw the 18s back on in the spring and painfully run them out. I am really looking at the new conti pure contacts DWS to replace the 18 hankooks. The pure is rated really well for wet and rain, and quiet also.
I am running about 24k a year and figured if I just ran the 18s I would get 1 good winter, 1 ok winter and three summers per set. By mixing in the 17s, I'll put about 6k per year on them- 3 to 4 good winters and 1 ok. The 18s can then be run out each time and at 18k per year should go 4 years. The cost will ultimately be about the same but this will guarantee good tread for the winter and the skinnier 17s help in the snow.
Now to run this car out to make the plan work... And that my car survives the traffic...lol

I have 18" tires, here in Va, snow is not a big issue....they are a lot quieter than the HKooks, but of course they are new and the HKooks had wear on them.

Thanks guys for the info, I bought myself sometime to ponder now that I have the 17s for the winter.

The MXM4 and PURE Contact w/ Eco plus both fall in the grand touring area and the extremeContacts are a high performance.

My neighbor has the extremeContacts on his A4 and overal likes them. He has mentioned that they are a little louder but not bad at all.

The grand touring tires offer a little longer warranty. I think all three are great tires and are rated high in their classes, that's why I appreciate the feed back on them from owners that are running them on a passat or similar car.:)

What's the quietest tire you can get for the Passat that you know of?
Tire Rack has rated the Mich MXV4 - IIRC - right around 9.

I have 70,000 on a set of these: 215HR/50 Series (not on the VW): they are sure durable, resist hydroplaning and seem quiet on a 2005 Accord coupe.

Season's best, ez

I just installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 on my 2013 Passat TDI SEL.

They make the factory tires seem like I was riding on bald tires. I got to test them in the rain and unlike the Bridgestone Potenza that came on the car they did not hydroplane at all.

Check out this video of me driving in heavy rain http://youtu.be/UkUG0dBwPEA

I am hoping to test them in the snow and see how well they do as well.
