Hey all! I have been driving my 99.5 Jetta TDI all over NS since May of last year and loving it! I am running winter tires right now but require a set for spring to fall.

Any suggestions from your experiences on best price/value/performance tires around these parts?

Much appreciated!

Greg

Hi and welcome to Fred's!

Tire selection criteria and opinions vary widely. In the past, I have found it very useful to read reviews (from consumers) about particular tires I might be inerested in at TireRack.com. They will also inform you which tire is the "best seller" for a Jetta or Golf, for example.

I think the Michelin Hydroedge's are worth a look at. Great warranty, and cheaper than the Energy's. I think I'll go with the Hydroedge's once the conti's are worn out on the NB (which should be summer-ish).
..but still not a cheap tire!

Hi Greg;
My preference in tires over the last 10 years or more has been Michelin. I have used the X1 on my Passat and Jetta mainly because of the original 3 year wearout replacement warranty. They must have put about fours sets on under warranty over the years, which makes your cost per tire very good. They have now changed that to a 130,000km warranty. I usually get about 55,000km out of the X1s then I get a new one for about $60.00 under that warranty. The other thing I look for is a high treadwear number, the X1s have 700. Generally any tire that has a high number should give you good service. I have had good local service with either Scotia Tire or Miller Tire, in the HRM area. I have been using the 195/60 -14 size, I don't think that the newer Hydroedge model is available in that size but may very well be for your size. If I didn't use Michelin I'd probably go with either Toyo or Bridgestone as they are available locally and have good warranty support.

Hi Brian, how are you?

I've started a thread here about tire replacement on my Passat.

If you could post about what are your experiences with the tires you bought over the years, it would be great.

I'm thinking going for the Nokian WR because it is a real 4 season tires (I would have Nokian Hakkapelitta 2 as winters).

I looked at the HydroEdge with a load rating of 760 and a warranty of 140 000 km, what a tire! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

The sizes aren't perfect though (185/65R14, 185/70R14 and 195/70R14).

Some members go with 185/70R14 and have no problems.

I'd go with this size because of the load rating of 87 compared to a LR of 85 with the 185/65R14.

I believe LR is important because it tells you how much weight the tires can support.

Our variants being heavy, I want to go with the highest LR possible (as long as the tire fits).

I was looking at the Nokian WR 195/65R14 (3.2% bigger than the stock 195/60R14) with a LR of 90.

What do you think about Nokian in general? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thank you Brian. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Hydroedge or Harmony. A bit more research and I should have my tires.

Much appreciated!

Put 4 HydroEdges on last week. Haven't had any wet weather yet (eagerly awaiting it) but initial impression is that they're really great tires. Road noise from the tires is non-existant. I've been throwing them into corners to see what they'll do. My stock suspension is the limiting factor now. Wear and durability I can't really address since they're brand new. I don't regret the purchase at all (well, yet anyway).

Let us know if you notice any fuel economy differences! I'm thinking of a set for the NB.

Stock size for my Jetta (195/65-15). Too early to tell if they make any difference in mileage. I don't expect they will one way or the other. I'll keep an eye on it though and post in a week or so.

Lived with the HydroEdges for a couple weeks now. Still happy with my purchase. Good grip, wet or dry. There's been a couple times going into the 'S' bend by work in the rain that I've thought "What the hell am I doing?" when I realized how quick I was going through. They inspire a lot of confidence. My Jetta's ride seems a wee bit harsher, but well within what I consider acceptable. I haven't noticed any impact on mileage. I'm not as anal as some on the board about tracking mileage however. I really couldn't tell you what my mileage was in the tank previous to the new tires. I can't even tell you what kind of mileage I've gotten from my last fill up to be honest... If there is any difference though it's not large enough to be noticeable to me. Anyway, I consider these much better tires than the MVX's they replaced.
