Oil leak.... the upper oil pan (there is a TSB about it). In addition to all the other things leaking (valve covers, everything in the valley, etc.).

So, gotta drop it all out, remove it from the transmission, and strip just about everything off of it to get down to the part leaking.

This one just had a ton of work done by the dealership at a euro shop. Mainly new OE EGR cooler to address a coolant leak in the valley. Nice and dry all over right now! Only thing I didn't see taken care of is a trans service - just ordered from idparts on sale ;)

The last two V6 TDIs I tore into had just had someone replace the EGR cooler, LOL.... but they left everything else under it (and did a lousy job on what they DID do). The oil cooler and the [plastic] coolant control valve and flange are underneath the EGR cooler.

I'd also get in the habit of draining the oil out of the left (passenger side) intercooler. The charge air tract on the T'reg/Cayenne/Q7 has a dumb design on the charge air tube where it comes around the engine and splits to go off to the dual intercoolers. The left one gets fed from the lower part of the Y, so that most ALL of the crankcase vapor oil goes to that one, nothing to the other, and the air blows right past it meaning it never adequately scavenges that left intercooler of built up oil. I've found it common to have a quart or more of oil hanging out in there!

These also do not employ any low pressure EGR, so they can over time gunk up the intake manifold, but usually they'll gunk shut the twin-path intake runner control valve, and you'll get a drop in power without ever really knowing it. Because no matter where that valve is, half the intake tract isn't ever being used.

geez! Our daughter’s 13 Jetta TDI had typical p0401 and other codes. VW didn't replace due to seriously long list of backordered parts, so they just cleaned the snot out of the egr cooler and egr side. I still smell small diesel fumes from the engine, I suspect on the egr side. Before that visit, we never smelled it. Whoever at VW didn't do a proper job. She will get deleted soon. Those shady mechanics at VW scares me.

Good to know - Thanks! I will definitely be combing through it. I expect that I'll be doing some "upgrades" in the future to address the EGR system. I normally leave them alone until there is a problem. Not sure that I want to wait in this case. But so far it runs really well and pulls hard!
