I've been wanting to upgrade to a larger TDI for a while now. My 2002 jetta has been getting kind of cramped lately( not sure it was designed for a 6'5" guy). I'll also be graduating college soon so I figured a nicer car would be good. I found an '04 with 267k and I know the touregs can get expensive to repair so I am hesitant to even consider it. Also I'm open to suggestions about larger Tdi's. Thanks and happy holidays.

Which are you looking at, R5 or V10? If the later make sure you get the full service history on it and realize there are some repairs on that motor that require it to be removed since there is no room to work while it is installed. If it is an R5 that may be a better option.

It's the V10. Is there anything I should specifically have checked? Also with the V10 does anyone know the normal engine life? I know I can expect to get 400k+ with my jetta but I'm not sure about the toureg. I'm aware of the costly repairs due to the large engine.

As I said, get the full service history of the vehicle if you can. 04-06 had turbo issues resulting in the motor being pulled to replace/repair them. This is not a cheap vehicle to service like your Jetta. If there is a rough shift between 4-5 the valve body in the transmission needs replaced. If you have a clunk in the drive train and can feel it in the arm rest the center bearing on the drive shaft needs replaced. Do yourself a favor and join Club Touareg then do some reading over there about all possible issues with Touaregs.

It's big miles for a car that can be incredibly expensive to fix - the gearbox is $8K, the engine $20K.

You say you're just graduating.

If you haven't landed an extremely well paid job, have you got VERY deep pockets to pay for repairs that might run into thousands of dollars?

You have to take the engine out of a V10 for even some quite minor repairs and you're looking at 30 hours labour before even fixing anything.

It's a great car, a supercar even, but that might bring super bills too.

Here's an excellent thread with info from around the world. It will pay you to read it carefully.

I've driven 10 cars/suv's in the last year in my search. I have a jetta TDI & I love diesel. I'm likely getting a Touareg TDI in the next year. Also, I'm a mere 6'2, but given a little arthritis in my spine, I'm more like someone a couple inches taller. On a budget, I think you'll be better with skipping the diesel & getting a 5 y/o Subbie Forester if you can swing it. Given the lesser mass, mileage won't be that much worse than a Touareg. It's tall enough that you'll fit with no problem. For a tall person, there are limited options. Forget anything with a sunroof as you lose a couple of inches. Touareg obviously works, but TDI will cost you way more. 1 of the advantages of diesel is it saves its value on the resale market, which hurts you. After the Forester, then you're looking at more expensive cars to get the headroom, or else something that's more of a minivan. There may be other options in the EU, but since things there tend to be downsized compared to the States, I'm not hopeful. Best of luck & congrats on graduating.

In my opinion, I think you should find something less expensive. It is not nice to have something go that will strip your finances that you may have starting out. That is a ton of miles. If the previous owner was a maintenance nut, you'd be ok, but if he was sloppy a couple of times, we would not hear the end of complaints.

Good luck.

^ditto. example - simple 02 sensor replacement requires engine removal and automatic $3k+ fee...from what I've read.

There are just too many to list....
The T'regs are expensive, and the V10 version is about as high as they got. Most were about $70k when new... 10 years ago.

I don't earn enough income to keep one on the road, even if you gave it to me. And while the V10 is a trip to drive, they really are not at all practical (but most SUVs aren't really). The B6 wagon has more interior volume, and had an AWD option if that is what you needed, and will use less fuel getting around.

The T'reg is decent off road, and is capable of towing quite a bit, but for the money you could buy 2 used F250s.

As a Volkswagen fan, I have to admit it would be neat to have the V10 beast tucked away in the garage, to bring it out to impress friends and family, but that would be the extent of its real-world use for me.

If you want a "larger TDI", a B5 wagon would certainly fit the bill, and while no Volkswagen is "cheap" to own or maintain, the BHW Passat would seem like a Civic in comparison to the T'reg.

I would only buy this car if:

#1 it was free
#2 you are a TDI GURU and can do all the service yourself
#3 you think this is the coolest damn car on the road

If #3 then you probably wouldn't buy a 300k mile version of it, so see #1.

As an actual V10 owner I wouldn't be scared a bit at 267k, I would not want to go into it with my eyes closed though. You do have the potential for high cost but at those miles many of the common problems would have most likely been addressed. It all comes down to the purchase price compared to the actual condition. If this was an edgy T-reg I would be much more hesitant to buy but a well kept clean car "could" be a great buy if priced accordingly. Many people who don't own a V10 (and maybe some who have owned one?)have heard horror stories and then pass the doom and gloom on to others, very similar to the B5.5 Passat crowd. These are possibly not the best vehicle for the typical TDI owner, the one looking for the most economical way to get from point A to point B. If you truly enjoy driving and understand this is a performance luxury vehicle that will have a higher cost of ownership to achieve those results they are hard to beat. Club Touareg is a great source to educate yourself on some of the T-reg common issues. Good luck and hope you do get a V10 at some point even if it is not this one.
