215k miles and no cam wear BRM

Reading the camshaft failure threads for several years, I’ve been checking for wear a few times and counting on having to replace the cam. Instead, I have even chamfer lines on all of the lobes from the base circles to the tips. I looked from all angles from the front and used a mirror to check the lifter faces from the back. I couldn’t see any dishing on the lifter faces.
After I read about the cam problems years ago, I switched to Mobil-1 TDT. I try
to change it every 10k, but sometimes it’ll end up to be 12k or more. Recently, I accidentally let it go for closer to 20k!
Are there some engines that don’t have the cam issue?

I did my cam at 200k having started Mobile 1 at 50k At 50k I had wear but when I replaced it at 200k I do not think it had increase much if any. I was surprised how little wear there was on the lifters also. I wish I had started using Mobile 1 earlier but wanted to keep the warranty for the engine. Will look at 250k and see if wear has started.

241k still good. I've extended my oil change interval to 16k the last 2 oil changes.

I have lots of customers with PD engines with over 300k miles and they are still puttering along like new.

Must be the short trip guys or wrong oil. Now I mostly do 550 mile trips at a time.

417,000km still on original cam.

I've been running Rotella T6 for about 200K

For your information VW states that the BRM engine should get oil designated as meeting the 505.01 standard to avoid engine damage. My 2005.5 TDI lasted 331,000 miles on the original cam. I now have 495,000 miles and the engine runs like new, with no oil consumption. Incidentally, I change my 505.01 oil and filter every 3500 miles.

The manual also states the service interval is 10k miles. ;)

I used Mobil 1 TDT (not on the VW 505.01 list) for a lot of the car's life, at 16,000 km oil change intervals. No idea what the current owner is doing.

Mobil 1 TDT must be the ticket. I bought my BRM @ 100k and have used it for the past 30k miles and there has been no visible changes in cam wear. Granted that's not a lot of miles to go on and I did add Liqui Moly's Cera Tec to my first oil change.

I switched over to Mobil 1 TDT on my 7.3L Excursion @ 100k. It's now got 300k on it and runs as good as it did @ 100k and I'm still running the stock injectors (oil driven).

NOPE!
My car was properly dealer serviced from new at the correct intervals using their 505.01 snake oil. I had 86,000 miles on the car when my warranty expired and my used oil analysis had such high Iron content I was advised that I had a failure in progress. I advised VW of the elevated Iron problem several times during the warranty period and was stonewalled.

I now have about 40,000 miles on the Colt Stage 2 cam I installed in June 2014.

Use Mobil 1 TDT on my 7.3L Excursion also now at 260k injectors and high pressure pump still working great. I use extending oil changes with test on the excursion changes about 30k-40k depending on driving with filter change every 10k. Cheaper that purchasing 3 gallons of Mobil 1 every 10k :)

I never look forward to changing the oil in my Excursion so I stretch it out as much as possible but 40k

yes just get a bypass filter kit for 2 micro filter and get a oil test every 10k or so; more often as oil gets old. Will be changing mine at about 42K this time and the 40k test came back great but I will be driving down to Mexico for the winter so want to change before I go and add about 10K to the oil.
Major expense is the 2 micro filter $50 (I change that when I change the oil other people keep it for 60K) and the testing $30.

Now back to VW TDI :)
