No TDI's...yet
2017 Passat Gasser

Since I may be getting rid of my TDI for a buyback, I have to ask...is the gasser Passat worth buying? I've always been stuck on TDI when it comes to VW and never considered the gas version.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, since it's not TDI related. I wasn't sure where else to ask.

Check over on passatworld.com, they are more of a gasser forum.

Sure it's worth. The fuel efficiency will not be as good but they will be quieter, smoother and will easily start even in the coldest days. :)

I am not a fan of that family of engines at all. Well, my paycheck certainly benefits, but I'd never own one.

I may go and test drive a KIA NIRO. With 50 mpg numbers, It might be a great replacement for my aging golf if I can stomach the KIA nameplate, or even better if I can get my wife to give up the minivan (3 out of 4 kids in college or beyond now).

I haven't seen any version of the TSI/TFSI that is much smoother or quieter than the diesel.

They have good torque but not my idea of a low maintenance engine. If they had a timing belts instead of chains it would be a different story. Direct injection produces a lot of soot and seems to wear out chains quickly.

I agree but I thought he was talking about the 1.8T or the 2.8 V6.

I am stashing as many diesels away as I can, hedging my bets that the future will not allow for any new car purchases for me anyway. I figure my current "fleet" will keep me happily diesel-ing along until I am no longer able to drive.

He's looking at the 2017 models, so it will be 1.8TSI or 3.6FSI. Both engines work well enough torque and economy wise but are a bit thrashy. Both seem to have cam chain trouble with high miles (200k km). The VR6 is worse since it will require trans removal for cam chain service and the valves are expensive to replace when they are all bent...

They are probably a good engine if you intend to trade before the warranty is up. I tend to buy cars with 200k km on them, so they probably wouldn't make my short list.

Given the absence of diesels, I'll probably have to drive one in the future. Good news is, I can fix it...
Crap, I didn't read the first line where the year of the Passat was stated. Sorry for the confusion, thought he was talking about a B5.5

I may be able to reach that outcome with what I currently own.
