who wants to bet the dealers will snag them up and add 5-8K to each listed price.

Is that typical mark up on wholesaled cars?

I have no idea. But I wouldn't be surprised. These cars need to be serviced and prepped, they may want the markup to contribute to a finance incentive, or who knows what else.

Why would a dealer snag-up the wholesale cars? Didn't they start life at dealerships and then get discarded to a degree? Who's wholesaling them? Just curious.

A local dealer just north of Baltimore has 26 used TDI listings HERE, all at what I think are reasonable prices.

My understanding is that VW is providing inventory lists to VW dealers from which they can bid. Those cars not snapped up by the VW dealer system are then being sent through the wholesale auto auction system. I do not know the degree of information that is being supplied to the dealers. But, I suspect that the cleaner cars will be in the dealer system. If some cars are going outside the dealer system, I wonder when & where they are getting the changes to meet the Fed. mandates.

From what I've seen, all these units are sold by VW credit and phase one has been completed. OR at least they have stickers saying they meet EPA regulations but aren't as clean as VW first said they would be. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken. I have one, it pulls very strong and I'm avg 47 mpg.
As far as dealer markup. Consider that auction fees are around $600. Transportation, detail, marketing, floor plan expenses may add another $800. A good broker may be ale to get you a vehicle for around $1500 over these numbers listed, which would include their fees, auctions fees, reassignment fees, and transport costs. If you have a local VW dealer that has these units in stock at least now you know what they are selling them for wholesale and remember they are getting a few hundred per car less than the sell price because of transport costs to the auction and sell fees.

Wouldn't be shocked if dealers jack them up.

I told a local dealer I was getting a "new" 2015 GSW DSG TDI SE with lighting package for $24,750 OTD with 0% financing for 72 months.

Their reply? "We'd be willing to sell you our used SEL without lighting package with 15,000 miles on it for $24,000 if you come in right away." What planet are these people from???

I understand your frustration but my goal of this thread was to educate the members of the current value of 2015 tdis. Last week a Passat SE with 30k was 17.5 wholesale, it looks like next week it will be 15. I bet this non-franshise dealer you talked to purchased his inventory a month ago and paid 22k and had at least 1000 in expenses before he could offer it for sale. I'm just trying to help you guys stay ahead of the market. I'm guessing the prices will continue to drop until inventory runs out. I have over 20k in mine, looks like I jumped the gun. There are some Jetta S models out there now for around 11-12 :(

I definitely appreciate the info. Didn't mean for it to sound otherwise.

Hause; Thanks. Your info is & was appreciated. Supply & demand. For the interim, there will be a supply of cars entering the wholesale market & will likely be followed by the 14's & older. Fuel/gas costs are low, crude low, oil market glutted, and the press & general public enamored with EVs. Add to that the reputation of the cars (from the press: Cheated, dirty, polluters, etc.). Prior to the 9's/10's, they TDI market was pretty much a "cult" market anyway. It is not surprising that the prices are dropping.

Hope so

35-40 years ago a *home run* was 'bout $1,000 (plus a $250 PACK) on 2-3 year old used cars ~~ in the range of $4K to $8K retail

Best part of a currant strong re-sale market is for us guys who already own a TDi :p

It's all over the place.

..... and

You do not seriously believe a dealer makes a profit on every car he buys.

IMO, Dealers will shoot the moon, on *fresh* inventory, and will work their way through the daily depreciation.

Dealers suffer depreciation too; as well as other cost

And they can face some steep carrying costs the longer the inventory sits.

I have had my 2015 Jetta SEL TDI with 6 speed manual and lighting package with added goodies on it and 40K miles for a long time...

asking 21500 and few folks committed and then withdrew...we have now decided to keep the Car...

Part of the issue in selling used cars (on the CURB, or for dealers) is the financing

The '15s are coming in to the 3rd year

I don't think financing is an issue for the bought-back cars. VW Credit is offering financing, and they have pretty favorable rates.

Your right about sales by VW. However, you still need a good FICO

If (when) it is on the CURB (offered by an individual owner) financing is an issue.

Whatever.....the price I was asking was less than any dealer is asking any customer for one of these new "used" cars and mine didn't sit somewhere for over 2 years....2 of these folks told me they would buy the car and it would be a cash sale.....then when the time came backed out....no longer a problem not for sale anymore....

Might be they were without good funds, or credit.

Some times folks who don't have the FICO (or cash in hand) would rather knock the car or price.

Human nature.

And therein lies the business model of the sub-prime auto lenders and floor plan credit. Very steep, those interest rates are. Add in the used car warranties/insurance, & loan insurance costs... Little wonder that many in the financial sector worry about a sub-prime auto bubble.

When I bought my CPO BMW I was told by the Finance guy I had one of the highest Credit scores he ever saw.....
I work for one of the major credit bureaus. It's honestly not that hard to get your credit way up (800+). Use less than 30% of your available credit line at all times (carrying balances), pay everything on time, don't do short-term loans. It's really that simple. Obviously life circumstances and things dictate, but just saying, those are the major impacts.

Yes it is. I've read that anything over 800 is largely fiction, but I think the max is 858.
