The "main" thermostat on the CVCA is under a little twist-lock water flange that the radiator hose goes to. It is buried in there.
Here's what the whole assembly looks like:
About a half a day's work to R&R that mess. 4.7hr book time.
The thermostats (there are two) themselves comes out, and can be replaced by themselves. Those two flanges are the twist locks... but they are almost impossible to do while in the car because the release tab is awkward to get at and the plastic tends to stick together and not want to turn.
God I love my ALHs....
