Folks, I am on the road and after an overnight stay in Tucumcari, NM my 2015 Passat displayed a P2563 code verified via Torque Pro app (I do not have
VCDS - Ross-Tech with me). No issues starting the 2015 Passat even though the temperature went down to 11 F at night. The car drove like the turbo was not engaged. After some local driving I got on I-40 struggling to go 60 MPH on flat and on hills it was like 40 MPH! After like 30 to 40 minutes the engine light with the coil shape stopped flashing. Torque Pro app no longer showed the fault and the car was back to normal minus still no cruise control and it has not come back so far after the almost three hour drive to Albuquerque.

I took this screenshot of Torque Pro going on a moderate climb on I-40 West:

I am planning to continue my trip hoping that this will be a fluke until I can have someone look at it on the way back in the Dallas-Ft Worth (Pierce Family Automotive is not available) area or perhaps someone in Albuquerque (suggestions?). The issue is that with the holidays many independent mechanics will be off to a well deserved break. I am not the original owner of the Passat and it has already over 175,000 miles, so no more extended warranty as far as I can tell.

Any kind of assistance/feedback will be appreciated in these circumstances!

There have been cases of turbo failures, but I think most of them are on 2012-2014 CKRA models. If I am not mistaken, the new 2015 engine did not have the same rate of turbo failures. I don't have boost data for Passat to compare, but I can say my other Kerma tuned diesel 4 cylinder engine produces the follow boost to RPM:
* 762 RPM - 1.08 bar (15.664 psi)
* 1674 RPM - 1.32 bar (19.145 psi)
* 2470 RPM - 3.57 bar (51.778 psi)

So to run at 2752 RPM and to get 1.42 PSI is definitely not normal. Once again, the data I have is from N47 BMW engine, I helped someone else with underboost on Bimmer forums, so I had that data. I can cross check with 2014 Passat, but it will still be the wrong model. Does anyone know if Passat turbo has a wastegate and variable vanes? On Bimmers, there is an issue with wastegate actuator or pressure converter, sometime vacuum hoses were deemed culprit since I believe it is vacuum activated wastegate.

Don't know about a wastegate, but pretty sure it is a variable vane as this is part of the turbo assembly (different part for 2012-2014 TDI).

no wastegates needed, just vnt actuators on all modern TDIs.

you should be fine to limp things along until it can get replaced, but there is a chance it may go into limp mode again.

if I were you, get this Mityvac tool to verify your actuator is in working order. That's how I found mine to be dead......... pump pump, gauge showed zero with zero actuator arm movement.

tested it on my other actuator from my original CR140 turbo off my CJAA and pump pump, gauge goes to 16.5. replaced it and my car runs happily.

are they vacuum activated? i thought that was older 1.9t TDI, i thought these were electrotechnical.

EDIT: whoops vacuum powered, with electrotechnical feedback loop.

Ok folks, back from the road trip so I need to give an update:

* When temperatures were fairly cold (~ below 18 F) it would behave as I described in post # 1. Then I learned if I drive it like 10 minutes or so, turn off the engine, wait like a minute (this might not matter), and turn the engine on the car is back to normal, no engine code, no coil light flashing and turbo is working as it should and power/acceleration is great.
* On the way back in Albuquerque and Ft. Worth temperatures at night were like 19 to 22 F and in the morning no issues. I did not have to do the procedure above.
* No issues starting the car in very cold weather like one night it got to 2 F in Colorado.

So basically intermittent problem with the turbo with DTC = P2563 below a certain cold temperature at this point. I am on the schedule to see a local independent VW mechanic next month.

Any other feedback appreciated.

wonder if you have a low temp vacuum leak, that will get worse over time and temps rise when it becomes an issue.

Update: warm weather here in SE Texas and recently the flashing coil light came and limp mode again :(

Then, a few days later, the engine light came with fault code P2564 (the flashing coil light went away). I have cleared the code with Torque Pro app but obviously the issue is getting worse maybe.

So does this mean, perhaps, that the culprit is most likely this one as pointed by AverageAndy and calimustang?

most likely. you should be able to run output tests on the actuator and verify its working well or where it's binding up. that should determine if a new part would fix the issue.

Only 175kmiles? do you have phase 2b installed? if not, go push the dealer to do it. Worth a try. My cousin MB GLK250 didn't get his mods installed until 165kmiles and got another 48 kmiles of warranty.....

I am the third owner of this 2015 Passat and, as far as I have researched, all dieselgate updates are completed and the vehicle is out of warranty regarding powertrain, emissions and such.

Anything else I am missing?

I have no experience. if you have not had Phase 2B of the warranty done, you car will show it open until 20150 or 600kmiles
