Halogen bulbs get dimmer as they age LONG before they burn out....bet you still have the factory bulbs....
Bet they become ok with new bulbs as long as the lens are clear.

LED kits to are hit or miss without changing the entire assembly...it's basically physics...leds are multiple points of light while a halogen filament in a 360 line...

My suggestion, get a few new bulbs for $20, and see if it works for ya...
Most "bright" h7 bulbs run hotter and thus have a shorter life...often months of use vs years.
But the suggested H7 Long life or a slightly brighter conventional one should be fine, without possibly MELTING the housings....it actually happens with "uprated" off road bulbs that also can burn up wires

Most of VW with halogens are poor. I have 1.6 TDI (CLNA) have same issue. Tried with led and it’s worsen than halogen. Only work around is using 100/90 with relay to get power from battery. I am using oshram all season. Mine is H4.

My Headlights are not very bright, Your thoughts on replacing them with LED or is there a H-7 that really works well.
Head over to the Mk7 sub-forum; lots of discussions on headlights for your Golf (not Gulf ;) there.

But in short, OH PLEASE NO!!! on the LED replacement bulbs. There are some decent aftermarket headlight assemblies available now that vastly improve the lighting. Not cheap, but used to be they were all in the $1000 range; now they've come down to less than half of that.
(To be clear, no experience on my part with those particular lights - just pointing them out.)
