Can you guys give me a quick second opinion? My 2015 Jetta just threw a serpentine belt right at 100 K. The only shop in town who can get to it right away gets $150/hr for labor. One hour labor for diagnosis. Another hour for serpentine belt and tensioner replacement. Out the door for the serpentine is like 550. If we do the timing belt and water pump now they want 2600 total. Seems high wanted to know what you guys think should I just eat the hour in labor I would save by doing the serpentine and shop around for the timing belt repair later on?

thanks

I knew that would be the answer I got. :)

I just don’t have the time right now. that sounds like 8 hrs of labor that would probably take me 15

my local VW specialty shop is booked out but can do it for 875 labor anytime after a few weeks which sounds like about half of what the big shop costs. So absent visible damage what interval?Something just under 120k?

If you have mechanical knowhow it's not bad to do it yourself. Your lucky your serp did don't get sucked under the cover. A TB job will cost anywhere from 1200-3k. Depending how shiesty the shop is. There might be a TDI guru near you but you'd have to look..

10 yr, 130k. Check the tensioner and all the serp pulleys.

Yeah 875+ parts seems reasonable

last guru who did my ALH and BEW TBs got 300 each I believe, but that was also a decade ago

CRUA for golf and sports wagon, CVCA for Passat and Jetta. They use the same belt components and serpentine.

Why don't you do your own serp, while you wait for your shop to do the rest? Serp is super easy, no more than 30min with a beer break in the middle

That was going to be my suggestion as well. It's not like replacing a water pump where "while you're in there" you might as well do the timing belt.
Serpentine belt and tensioner are all "right there":
Lock it out, remove bolts, replace, install belt, remove locking pin.
Less than half a page in the manual :D

That video is slightly better than another floating around on YT. He at least confirms pins go back in after two rotations of the crank. But, the erWin manual says to loosen (not remove) the cam pulley bolt and the little torx screw. Then when installing the new belt, you rotate the cam pulley all the way clockwise (the torx screw will bottom out in the oblong hole). This way, when you tension the belt, the cam pulley is able to rotate freely counterclockwise without stressing any other component. The torx screw winds up about halfway in the oblong hole after tensioning.

$120 for a mechanic on the cheap side.... 4 to 6 hours billed. $800 parts kit.
That's shooting from the hip.

I just had the dealer do mine, WP, etc about 2K with "15%" off. all in all not upset, OE parts, would be frustrated if an aftermarket part failed

I've never trusted a dealer to do my TB changes. (And most good TB kits are using many of the same OEM suppliers, but without the cost of having a VAG symbol).

Slightly different engine, but when my '13 Passat threw the serpentine belt it was alternator caused it, the internal one-way clutch failed.

I just did it on my golf for about $400 in parts (pulleys, waterpump, timing and serpentine belts) $50 in tools and 4 hours or so, learning from youtube.

Just don't cut corners and you can do it yourself safely.

Wow. A kit for mine with water pump and tensioner is about 120€ max (continental). Here you can't get it done for under 800€ for the labour, and a 'proper' garage charges over 2k.
That was why I started this whole malarkey. Now I can change mine in about 2-3 hours easy once the car is on the axle stands. I recently did my wife's 2015 polo which is a bit more difficult as the engine needs to lifted on one side (nobody would touch it for under 3000€). It was different but not so much, it took me about 2 half days.
For me it's been well worth doing more and more and I've learnt a lot - I would recommend it as long as you don't need your car urgently, but one does keep throwing money out for tools etc.

the engine on the golf/jetta still needs to be lifted on one side to remove the mount

the polo engine could prob be held from the hood strut with a couple zip ties ;)

,,,, maybe the older polos, but the engine / gearbox is not so different from an ALH - the gearbox is identical to the one on my MKV. VWs seem to get heavier and heavier with each model.
The polo weighs over 1200kg (ca. 1.35 US ton),
My MkIV, which is much bigger, weighs less (just under 1200 kg)
