Would like to do this at home any ideas on the best way to drain out the coolant, pictures of which hoses to pull would be great.
Thanks

98 Jetta TDI AHU 1.9L (944 TDI swap in progress) I moved so now i got nothing but an AHU in a garage on a pallet.
drain at the bottom of the radiator
fill system with 100% distilled water and a flushing cleaner.. i really LOVE Evapo-Rust TC001 Thermocure Coolant System Rust Remover
but this stuff works way better than anything out there but it needs like 10 to 15 flushes with heat cycles to get it all out... i garantee you will find a TON of sediment and crud come out.. this is the BEST way to clean the system.... BUT>.. IMO its unnecessary if you have a "clean" system to begin with as long as the coolant looks OK after you drain it.

I have used this on 5 vehicles now, one of them was only 30K on the clock and was a 2019 outback... its amazing how much crap is in there from the factory!

3 flushes with normal distilled if you dont use any flushing chemicals.
fill with a L of concentrate and then start topping it off with a 50/50 and finish the ratio with a gravity tester.
no matter how you flush the system unless you tip the engine over... there is still water or whatever left over. this is the 100% fool proof easiest way to do the flush properly otherwise you are just guessing... and thats also fine if you are trying to do it as cheap and fast as possible.

G12-G13 Coolant is long life coolant .
Every time you do timing belt you will drain 70%-80% of coolant , so coolant do not need to be replaced other then that .

My 2014 has no bottom radiator drain. The car is my wife's has 9400 miles, because of the age I just did the timing belt. Left the water pump because of low mileage and zero signs of leaking. I don't have a low bottom radiator hose only one looks to be mid-way up on the radiator, on the passenger side.

well... it should... but if it does not for some crazy reason (its usually on the lower hose as it comes out of the radiator... then just take off the lower hose.
even if you drained all the radiator or not.. a lot gets left behind. hence the flush i told you to do.

Who knows why they removed the radiator drain probably to save money or hope you return to the dealership for the flush. Coolant looks great just because of the age I am going too change it states it needs G13 coolant.

Any modern coolant will work as long as its flushed. Some are compatible though. So long as its phosphate free etc...

Thanks for the video, Bulldogger. I'm going out to take my 2nd swing at draining mine today. Tried to drain it last night by removing bottom hose - it was bone dry. I'm assuming the bottom of the Tdi radiator is somehow part of the inter-cooler? That would be good, as the hose "in the middle of the radiator" is actually at or near the bottom of the coolant. I hope. We'll see in a minute.

Well - that was disappointing. No room for my big mitts in that tiny space where the coolant bottom/middle hose attaches to the radiator. It looks like removing the right side fender liner might actually provide line-of-sight access and help me avoid getting a face full of coolant.
Once more into the breach!

Trying to change my coolant in my mk6 cjaa golf. Not sure yet if the oiler is gone or just muddy because Having trouble disconnecting the lower coolant hose connector on my mk6 cjaa.
Any tips

There are just too many to list....
If the lower right fender liner is off, the hose isn't especially difficult to get to.

If you are just wanting to change the coolant, and have some patience, you can just remove the vent line at the bottle, aim it so it will drain down and away, start the engine up and let it run, and just keep adding new coolant mix to the bottle.... it will slowly purge it all out.

How much Coolant are you finding you can drain out? I just replaced the water pump on a CKRA, also pulled the lower radiator hose off & decided to replace the original heater core while I was at it. I was very surprised that I was only able to get just over 1 Gallon of coolant back in.
I was expecting 1.5 or more. I thought I had trapped air, but that didn't seem to be the case. Got it up to temp, took it for a drive & its still at the full mark.
