I've made the decision, but not pulled the trigger yet, to put on a set of Pirelli Cintauro P7 All Season Plus tires on the JSW. Wife drives 600 miles a week so the OEM tires have 48K miles on them. They still have good tread, but winter is coming. Anybody have any experience with these tires?

The stock continentals were basically balled at 30k for me. (Florida heat burns through tires quick) I replaced them with some cheap Falken Ziex ZE950 a/s from my local tires plus and have been very satisfied with them over the 10k I've put on them so far.

So far the ride has been smother/softer than the continentals without noticeable increase in sidewall flex. I also found the Falkens to be significant quieter on good smooth roads but louder on rough/heavily patched roads.

They also handle rain like a champ it rains alot here in Florida so I've had a lot of rain testing. You really have to try to spin the tires in the rain. Hitting puddles that other cheaper tires would hydroplane on the Falkens just dig in you gotta hold it tight but they don't hydroplane. Can't comment on snow but I remember reading reviews of them being decent.

They were also but 3 get 1 free from tires plus with a 59min or $59 install time deal. They took longer than 59min so I got $59 off bringing the total cost of tires plus install to $377. So super cheap with high performance imo

might want to look into a set of real snow tires.

17 inch wheels. Where we live, we live right in the spot where we may or may not get snow. I'm not sure snows are worth the expense. We're more likely to get ice than snow, and in that case, the tire doesn't matter much.

TIRE RACK... even if you don't buy, they have a lot of info, user reviews, great search engine with filters, side by side comparison, and videos where they compare on track the tire against each others in the same class. Really how much do you want to spend. I can recommend the obvious choice:

MICHELIN PRIMACY MXM4 Size: 225/45R17 90H (also Premier and Pilot Super Sport A/S are highly rated Michelins)

At $170 each they are expensive. Shop around, I have seen them go for $150/each on line free shipping. Sometimes there are coupons. Good Year, BFGoodrich, Yokohama, Sumitomo, Pirelli as well Continental all make good tires. You can get nice tires for about $102 each. I would not go with Summer only performance tires... all season would suit you best I think, but would not get winter, snow tires either.

I did my research at tire rack, but am buying locally. What I learned with some phone calls is that the installation charges boost the total price enough to eliminate the tire rack direct buy savings. I was surprised to find the best local price for these tires is actually walmart. Didn't expect that.

Around here (central Illinois), we tend to have either (a) dry pavement or (b) several inches of ice on the winter roads. It snows just enough to pack down, then it warms up just enough to turn it to ice. In that situation, tires matter a little, but nothing is very good. Snows on dry pavement wear out in a hurry.

You may not really be informed on current snow tire choices.

I put 10,000 miles on a set of Michelin xice I3 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=X-Ice+Xi3&partnum=055HR6XI3XL&wTire=15&autoMake=Volkswagen&autoYear=2013&autoModel=Jetta%20Sportwagen%20TDI&autoModClar=&wtpackage=true

mounted on steel wheels last winter. most of the time on dry or wet roads, but the few times I needed them, they made a big difference, including the end of year party at a vermont ski resort, freezing rain for the whole dinner, and by the time we left, it was almost impossible to walk on the wet ice. after the car warmed up enough to get the ice off the windows, it drove back to our room (couple miles with several good hills) just fine.

Tread depth went from 8mm to 7 mm after the ten thousand miles. should be good for four or five years at this rate.

The big mega box stores Walmart and Costco may be evil but they are really good for tires. I empathize with those driving conditions, melting and refreezing ice...mess. Since its only part of the year, it would suck to buy tires for those conditions for the whole year. People buy a new set of rims and tires just for the bad months and then go back to their spring summer fall wheel tire set.

Check Craigslist! I found 4 snow tires with good VW 17" rims for about $200. Tires were basically new and I now I don't have to mess with messing up my nice rims.

IMO The word "Snow" is snow tires is misleading. I find ice is exactly why you would want a "snow" tire. The compound is designed to help with traction on slippery surfaces as well as snow. I was a skeptic until I bought a set of Michelin X-ice. They made a world of difference even when we didn't get much snow.

It's neat how the sipes fill in with ice shaving and "grip" the frozen surface. I wonder who figured that out?

I agree dry powder snow has traction, it is when it melts and refreezes, aka ice...
often covered with more snow. But fresh snow on cold concrete is not bad for traction.

Installed the Pirelli's on Nov 15. So far so good. Quiet running, and maybe 1-2 mpg improvement. Haven't had any snow/ice yet to judge. In other news, I finally figured out where a rattle in the vehicle is coming from: the sunroof. Any ideas on dealing with a rattle up there? It doesn't leak or stick...at least not yet.
