Hi All,

I'm new on the tread. I have a 6-speed 2014 Jetta Sportswagen TDI with 142k purchased CPO with the fix back in 2020. I replaced the DPF at the end of the settlement warranty miles after going into limp, but have recently started throwing codes.

Initially I coded with P0401 & P2002. The only complaint was a slightly loader engine with a bit of smoke out of the tailpipe when cold and a touch of soot. I brought it to the dealer thinking I'd need another DPF, but they told me the DPF was fine and that it was a new manifold that was needed. After getting the estimate for $3000 I chose to use my google diploma. I removed the manifold and scrubbed off the carbon from the manifold, EGR valve, throttle body, and changed the intake manifold flap motor. I cleared the codes, but threw P2002 and P0401 again in a week.

Took it to a mechanic, who also said my DPF was fine and advised I replace the EGR Valve and force a regen. Well, three days later and now I have P240F and P0401.

All I want is my car to run right. Any advise you gave give would be fantastic. Of course, if you have a mechanic you'd recommend in north NJ.....

GM, I have no engine modifications. I bought it certified from VW in 2020 and have only done regular maintenance + a timing belt at 120k miles.

I've had two independent mechanics (one was Tri-County VW in Lyndhurst, NJ) tell me the the DPF was not cracked

If they are correct, they can also tell the ECU not to throw DPF codes
That's crazy! I had a DPF covered under the VW emissions warranty 20k miles ago. While I inherently do not trust the VW store, they'd be the only ones who could have set the ECU not to report an DPF error codes. Is there a way I can check if that was done? I have access to a scan tool

@Dave In NJ : Do you still have dieselgate warranty remaining?

There is a technical bulleting on this, from VW of course, that describes the issue and says the DPF is indeed cracked. I was trying to find the TSB but I would need a different computer for that.

Force the issue with VWoA if you are still under dieselgate.

EDIT: oilhammer gave you the ammunition you need

And to be clear, there was a TSB for this dating back to well before any Dieselgate nonsense... this was a well-known, well-documented issue a DECADE ago. It's just made MUCH worse after they "fixed" the car. Get used to it. It'll keep happening... until you elect to fix it permanently.

But it shouldn't happen 20k miles into a new DPF, that is ridiculous!

OP said he has a new DPF with only 20k on it.

Well, it shouldn't have been sold here in the first place, right? ;)

All I (we) have to go by is what the OP has shared, and what the pattern is. Obviously if there are any leaks of any kind, be it an exhaust leak or an intake leak (pre- or post-charge air tract), it could throw off the pressure calculations... if the pressure sensors' connections (the tubes) are messed up somehow, it could throw off the pressure calculations. That's why the real tell-tale sign is the soot post-DPF, and in this case, the tailpipes could still be sooty from before SO you'd need to remove the EGR tube to see if this "new" DPF is cracked.

I also think that poor mounting could maybe screw something up, and I see a LOT of that... dealer techs just love to leave things loose or missing, especially that upper DPF mounting bolt (heck, sometimes the whole bracket is gone!).

The extended warranty expired as did the parts warranty from when it was replaced. I brought it back to the VW store where the replacement DPF was done, but again, they're telling me it's not damaged. They told me to replace the intake manifold

Yeah, dealer techs abilities are appalling at best.

Perhaps printing this off and spoon feeding it to them will help:

01-18-13 - MIL ON DTC P0401, P2002 or P240F Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient (2051596) (nhtsa.gov)

That's the newest revision to the TSB, which also has the air filter checked and the "snowflap" operation checked (which is the thermo-controlled preheat valve in the bottom of the air cleaner), as well as the MAF.

But if the car has sooty tailpipes.... the DPF is bad.
thanks for the link!

So, the car went to M&M Auto in Montague and Mike confirmed that indeed the DPF is cracked. I tried calling VW customer car to see if they would be any help, but struck out there. Does anyone have any tricks or suggestions to get VW back on the hook for any of the $$$ for a new (will be my third) DPF? My CPO warranty expired (time) as did the diesel settlement warranty (miles, I have 144k on the odo).
