Group,

I have searched the forum and it seems like I am not the only one with this problem, but I don't see a 'definitive" fix. My problem is that after sitting for a bit (8-12 hours) sometimes it takes a long time from my car to start. It will crank for a while, I will stop because I don't want to harm the starter or the battery, I will cycle the key a few times thinking it is the fuel pump, try again, it may start but it might crank for a while again. After a bit, it will start. Once started it runs fine, no error code (I have a VCDS) and it will restart without an issue. After searching I see several posts on here and things range from crank senser, glow plug relay, key switch, ECU or the VVT system. Has anyone on here figured out this issue that seems to be plaguing these cars. Again I love the car, but don;t feel like having a battery go dead cranking it or ruining a starter.

Any ideas or definitive fixes out there?

I don't know if cycling the key runs both fuel pumps (in-tank lift pump and auxiliary pump). It may still be a fueling issue.

Since you have VCDS, I would check the actual output of both pumps by running each output test with the discharge line in a container, to see how fast they pump. I believe the service manual has an actual rate that it should meet, but I don't have that value -others may chime in.

Group, I discovered something else while one of these "episodes" was happening. It seems like at firs the starter does not crank as "fast" in the beginning. After cranking for a bit, I would stop, cycle the key a few times, try again. It might crank longer with no start, but it might start cranking slow and then all of a sudden you can hear it cranking "faster" and less labored. It will then start. Could it be a failing starter? I have not looked yet at the fuel pressures but that is next in line.

his car does not have this injector pump.

it does not

I will cycle the key a few times thinking it is the fuel pump
this does nothing

are there any DTC's logged in the ECU?
look into that module with VCDS

Just a bit after bought my cjaa, I had a similar thing happen. Fast forward a week or so later, and it was happening pretty much each time the car had sat more than a few hours. Noticed a small fuel leak. The auxillary fuel pump was leaking from the nipple. I installed a new pump, and it hasn't happened once since then.

Group, just wanted to breathe new life into this and give an update. Long story short, still have not found the issue but I kind of know what it is not. Just for giggles I used mt VAGCOM and I cycled my fuel pumps like you would do if you ran out of fuel, changed fuel filters, etc. (basic settings- 035). I did this after it sat overnight. I did this for three 30 sec cycles to make sure I wasn't losing prime (like from a fuel leak) and that my fuel pumps were indeed running. After doing this I tried to start and it still did not start so it seems it can't be a lack of fuel being the issue. Any other guesses? Also no engine codes still.
