Hi there,

I am looking to purchase this vehicle and seems like a great opportunity. I however, am no mechanic. I would be happy to have thoughts and advice of those in the know. This has just recently had the long block, turbo, starter, flywheel, thermostat, water pump among other things replaced by VW. I am attaching screenshot of invoice with details.
I’m inclined to believe this is a better deal than others with 135k at same price - likely still needing timing belt done.
Thoughts?

Did they swap the timing belt assembly from the old engine? I don't see it on the invoice. Long blocks typically don't include the timing belt.

Sounds like the hydrolock was caused by turbo failure. I'd be concerned about the DPF condition. It may have gotten flooded with oil.

Does the car have any of its dieselgate warranty remaining?

It had a new timing belt put on it. That's what the '03L-198-119-N repair kit' is.

Looks like a decent deal assuming it was all done correctly.

If the engine was just replaced under the warranty extension, then it is likely still under the warranty... unless it just happened to mile out on the technician's test drive. Also, as far as the DPF is concerned, of all the bad turbochargers I've replaced on CJAAs, I've never had to also replace a DPF. DPFs fail all on their own, but I've yet to run across one that suddenly failed right after a turbo failure. The tech should have set all the readiness post repair anyway, but that's easy to check.

Personally, I don't think it is necessarily a "better deal" than one that has the same mileage but not suffered in this way. Because it isn't like a CJAA would have any appreciable "wear" on it anyway.

Looks like the modification was done April 2020. So the 4 yrs/48k is past.

Again, thanks so much for the info.

I am not finding any in same overall condition and or with nearly this mileage. Most are in the 135k range compared to this 70k

Everything is overpriced. If this is at a dealer then it is WAYYY overpriced. Just because you see them for sale at a certain price, doesn't mean they are selling. I have my 2014 TDI on FB and am $5-6000 under the next comparable similar vehicle and its been crickets. Unless you have a mechanical friend or are willing to roll up your sleeves I would take a hard pass. A trip to a VW dealer just to diagnose is $170...then its $170 hr. They will throw parts at it because its not their money. Just some food for thought. I have a few diesels and I don't recommend them to people who don't know how to work on them, or don't have deep pockets.

The price is what the market will pay. Thing is, regarding TDIs, you cannot buy a new one. And you cannot buy a new Sportwagen at all period.

I would say most everything is volatile in the car market today though.

I just sold a 2002 Jetta sedan with nearly 300k on the clock for $4k, and probably could sell a couple more if I had them.

It isn't exactly a stellar time to buy new, either. That's what I'm saying, the new cars are mostly trucks or crossdressers now. Aside from the Mustang, Ford doesn't even sell a "car" here anymore. And aside from the Corvette, Chevrolet's last remaining car is bowing out this year (the Malibu).

Let's see a list of station wagons you can buy new in the USA for 2024. No Volkswagens there. You can get the Audi A4 and A6 wagons, but just in the 'Allroad' variety (sort of jacked up with fender flares, like the Subaru Legacy and Impreza Outbacks used to be, only less lesbian), the RS6 Avant, which is a station wagon that will embarrass a lot of performance cars.... it'll also cost you well over a hundred grand, an MB E-class wagon, but I think they just have them in their butchy jacked up versions now, and some goofball Porsche (that's actually cheaper than the RS6!), the rest are barely station wagons, certainly not like they used to be... closer to crossdressers to me. A couple Volvos and the Subaru Outback, now its own fugly CVT-cursed model.

10,950. Not at a dealer either (so no nonsense fees)
Considering it has a new engine (well, a new long block), turbo, starter, flywheel and the body only has 70K miles, leaving aside that the car market is what it is, 11 grand sounds like a pretty good price... for context, I got my 2013 wagon in 2022 with 78.5k miles for 12 grand CAD, which is roughly 8.5k USD....

If you trust the dealer did a good job with the engine swap then it is a pretty good deal. I'd have the car inspected by another shop prior to purchase, however, to make sure they didn't butcher the job.

I agree. I've had stuff done at end of warranty period that wasn't done right and by the time I started having problems again the warranty was expired.
