2014s do not have DEF, that was added with the EA288 motor in 2015

From my understanding, it is a completely redesigned engine.

Not really. Many consider the EA288 engine in the '15s to be better than the CJAA in the '10-14 cars, correcting several issues that engine has, including more common (although still not that common) HPFP failure and intercooler icing. And using DEF gives VW more flexibility in tuning the car for best performance and economy.
