i just started using my block heater the dealer installed, even though it was supposed to be installed at the factory but was not installed due to a safety recall. My issue is, after having it plugged in all night the car thermostat is still reading the car is cold, shouldn't the car be atleast a little warm after starting in the morning?

I'd say yes. You say plugged in all night. Are we talking like >8 hours ? If that's the case then it should give some heat from the vents. I have a Scanguage II in my Golf. I plug in the coolant heater about 4 hours overnight. With that it shows about 150*F on the SGII. The cluster gauge is still at the bottom. It doesn't move till my SG shows about 125*F. Now that 150*F drops fast to about 100*F as soon as the engine fires. The OEM coolant heater in my Golf is only about 500 Watts. Not sure if the Passat one is the same.

I'm wondering if I have the heater that goes on the oil pan, warming the oil instead of the coolant, would that make a difference to how quickly the car warms? And yes, I plug it in at usually 1 am and unplug it at 8 am.

Now that's a good question. I just assumed it was a coolant heater. I know the recall was on the coolant heaters. Mine just missed it by about a year or so.

The answer is no. If you refer to the coolant temp needle in your dash, than no.

When the needle is at the rest position it means that the temp of your coolant is at 50-55 Celsius or below.

If its -10C outside and you plug your car, maybe the coolant will be at 10 or 20C (I don't know) but the needle shouldn't move at all.

BUT, it will get to normal temp waaayyyy faster than if you don't plug your car.

It never makes my temperature needle move one iota. Neither did the Calix unit I had first in my ALH, who happens to make the heaters for the Passat. No instant cabin from these either.

On the other hand, I later had a Phillips and Temro (aka Frostheater) on the ALH, and the needle would be about 3/16 of the way up, and there was instant cabin heat.

If you ever add one aftermarket, there is no contest which way you should go, however they are included on Canadian models, so for me at least, I'll use what they gave me.

My 2014 will blow warm air after 8+ hours of use. I don't have a temp gauge to determine, but I highly doubt it's moved.

I used a Kill-A-Watt meter and it's a 589W heater that makes a bit of noise.

Ok thanks, I'm disappointed, I thought it would give me atleast some warm air when I started the car. It definitely makes a difference on the car starting in the cold but I still have to wait for the warm air.
