So I just passed 10,000 miles. So far, took a 1,000 mile tour through Colorado from Denver to Crested Butte and around to Aspen and back at high speed. I've replaced a fender and the rear valance, installed a dogbone insert, and have broken the rear vents in the center console. I'd like to take apart the console but in needs a special tool to get to the screws. not like the older ones. This is my second tdi, I've had the '06 sedan, a mk3, and an '06 gti with a APR tune that was totaled before my current ride. The dogbone insert really improved the shifting and is not annoying when it thumps (throbs) at intersections. I wouldn't want an insert with an automatic though. I say it gives it personality and is worth it. The shifts on the stock JSW are so soft. I had it leftover from when I was going to put i on my GTI after I put the OEM euro shorter shift kit. Both are nice and inexpensive. I'm waiting on a tune, maybe after 36,000 mile warranty. The malone tune sounds more powerful but another fellow had to work with the tuner to pass the emissions testing here. Oh yeah, the MDI Ipod cable got pinched and the audio went out. I ordered one from amazon for $13 and hope it works cuz the OEM cable is $50. Love my TDI and average 39 mpg mostly city 15 mile commute from Littleton to downtown Denver and back. Sweet, and I use Diesel Kleen.

I'm right at 10k on my '13 JSW, noticed that mpg improved the past 1500 miles or so. I was getting 36-37mpg for the first 8k, now getting 42 mpg. Dealer svc guy says to expect it to continue to get better. :D

If what your are saying is that a MPG increase awaits once past 8500 miles or so....................you have just MADE MY DAY (Odo currently 7500)

You’re happy with the dogbone mount insert?! I put one on a friend’s 2011 JSW, horrible rattle and vibrations!
He insisted to keep it for “brake in” 6000 miles later he ask me to take it out. If the car is for track use only I’ll definitely use one, but for everyday driving definitely not.

I have DG short shifter and extremely happy with it. Actually that’s the only mod I have besides few VCDS tweaks.

only 50,000 more miles for engine to finish breaking in. I saw some gradual increasing at about 10,000 in MPG but 60,000 was like flipping a switch. not so much more MPG but just the feel and power of engine.

My vents for back seat in the center console broke also with the kids back there but I haven't bothered to fix.

I broke the console vents too.... really a flimsy arrangement. Still trying to figure out how to disassemble the console to fix the louvers.

Dogbone insert, I approve this message

Yeah, I think the dogbone is so worth it. The install was a major PITA. In hindsight, I would do it differently. The first miles after the install it was almost unbearable. I was so pissed, especially after fighting with it under my car for a while.
But the shifts are much better, crisp. Well, more like a thud. Currently it throbs at low rpm <1,200 with the clutch engaging or engaged and at a downhill sloping stop. Uphill stopped, nothing. Flat, it throbs a little with the brake on. Nothing with the brake off. sweet. I changed my driving style a little. Probably for the better by not bogging it and spending more time in the sweet spot.
When it was new I babied it the first 1,000 miles and got 42 mpg on a tank. Then I read that you should drive it harder to break it in. Since then I make sure I spool the turbo and enjoy the pull The first to second uphill shift improved drastically. Before it was like I was losing my momentum. now it just pulls... nice...
When I went to the dealer, the kids working there were like *** and I was bragging on it like, "Hell yeah, That ****'s the beast! She's got personality now."
Anyone in Denver is welcome to drive mine to see if it's for them.
Lastly, Could you please tone your bold and font down?
Please, no shouting.

Just passed the 20,000 mile mark on mine. Not one issue, creak, or rattle. So far it's been hot, straight, and normal.

Sorry about the font, didn't mean to shout or put any feelings in to it.
Which insert you have? This friend of mine used the ECS (red one) and the install was very easy. Took me 15 min. to lift the car and take of skid plate and 5 min. to install the insert and torque the bolts. Wonder why it was PITA for you. Taking it out 6 months later was more difficult (20 min) and plus new TTY bolts ($10) I drove the car after the install and 6 months later and didn't notice any "break in" What breaks in is your perception, you get used to it. Do the GPS test, put one on your windshield (suction cup) and try to keep it there for 10 miles city driving :)
Don't get me wrong, as I said in my first post if the car is only for race track and fun I'll put one tomorrow, actually I'll use the HPA bushing.
I'm not surprise about the reaction of the kids in the dealership, kids are easily amused.
Most of the cars sold these days don't have personality, they're designed and made for profit. They do reflect personality of their owner with all the mods he puts on them.
I agree with you 100% that everyone who is thinking of dog mount insert should test drive first.

Cheers,

PITA and the Payback

Oh yeah, perceptions do have a bit to do about it. The PITA and the payback.
I watched the ecs video about the install and bought some grease from Autozone and was gonna slip this ***** in, an easy install. I'd recommend dishsoap. I don't have a floor jack, so I lifted the car and set it down on blocks to squeeze in the inset that way. No big deal, it gets in okay, but then when I go to thread the bolt it doesn't line up, cuz the insert pushed up the top part. Yeah, I didn't even think about that until I was trying to figure out how to get it back in place. Tight fit, nice. I didn't have anyway to get it back out because it was all the way in there.
So I put the bolt back in the best that I could and drove for a couple of miles to try to work it out by having the dogbone push on the insert.
That worked to get it halfway out. Then in the struggle I tore off the front two smaller inserts. Maybe that makes a little difference? (the red ecs insert)
So after wrenching on it in a tight uncomfortable spot, on my back under the car, cutting my hands and getting greasy from yanking on this *****. I said **** it, I squeezing this ***** back in, with the bolt in, so it keeps the top and bottom in line.
That's what I recommend to anyone because both sections can move forward, where there is more room.
Small project turned bad.
So we didn't get off on the right foot. Then when I drove it, I couldn't notice anything but the ****ing annoying bucking and shaking. SOaB
I opened my mind the next day, when my wife informed me that, "It shifts better". really???
.. So I quit focusing on the terrible ass kicking bucking and shaking and started driving it.
Huge difference. I have one uphill intersection that I have to stop at everyday. Before, I'd rev it and barely make it into second with any momentum. Now, I'm chirping the tires going into second. Hell yeah. I leave people in the dust at that intersection everyday. What up fools?
And second to third? Forget about it. Solid.
The terrible noise, bucking and shaking. Yeah, I wore that out. I wasn't having it. Now it's fine.
I was thinking about it on the ride home, (contemplating my opinion) focusing on the downsides. The vibration. I felt it twice. One time, it was relaxing. It didn't make noise, just the motor shaking. I don't think anyone else in the car even noticed.
I read every post I could find about it right after the install, cuz I hated it. Was the performance trade-off bearable while I drove the hell out of the car to payback the abuse that the dogbone insert had, and was currently giving me? Barely. During the first days? No.
Did I have a bad install or did I have a good install? Based on the current cost/benefits of 1. improved performance, 2. low cost, 3. little or no side effects, and 4. amusing third person accounts of how terrible it is, I'd have to say that it was a good install.
Would I do it again? No, I'd replace the entire mount.

dog mount insert install (easy way)

I'd like to get together for a beer or two and swap cars for a test drive, but Denver is a bit far for me :)
Did you install short shifter or planing to install? Makes big difference, I think it's a must for 3 pedals cars. The stock one has 1 foot throw, my hand hits the dashboard every time I put 3th or 5th. Changed mine 2 days after I bought the car. I've been driving VW for the past 25 years and I'm very familiar with their stock shifter. Which one, that's personal choice. For my driving style there is nothing better than DG short shifter. I don't have any issues going from 1st to 2 uphill or down hill.

ok, this is for everyone who believes that 5 bucks piece of plastic will:
" 1.improved performance, 2. low cost, 3. little or no side effects" and wants to try/use dog mount insert howto (easy way)

I also watched the ECS video and stopped watching the moment he start hammering the insert. This video should be called "how NOT to install"
You need:
Floor jack+jack stands or ramps
Torque wrench
Long screwdriver
Grease (rubber safe grade) you can use dish soap but...if you decide few months later to take it out it will be very difficult or impossible without dropping the subframe.

Take out the dog bone, apply grease/soap to the insert, insert the insert in the bushing (just a bit) put the long screwdriver through center of the insert and into the bushing. Pull the screwdriver (not much) towards the engine with one hand and use other hand (4 fingers) to push the insert. That's it..... no brute force need it.

Cheers,

We just passed 18k on our wagon, with a few minor issues along the way. The cheap rear vent broke once, and the replacement was broken by the dealership the day it was 'fixed'. We're on our third now. Also, about a month ago the passenger side rear door locking module died, rendering the door lockless. She's been fueled mostly with Shell or Conoco, and always with Diesel Kleen. (Edit: We usually see between 40 and 42 MPG)

My biggest complaint about this car (and our 2012 RUG Beetle) has been VW dealer service. We've been to four different dealers in the Seattle area and have settled on University VW for the time being. Other dealers have taken multiple visits to correct issues (Pignataro VW), caused new issues (Cambell-Nelson VW), or simply haven't done the service requested (Pignataro VW and Chaplin's VW). We had a great dealer in northern Colorado before moving to Seattle, but I'm hoping our hunt will be over.
