Hello,

the car has barely 85k miles, we have it for 2 years, bought at 40k miles. completely stock. now the car drives pisspoor limp mode with unusual noises at 2k rpm. sometimes engine bucks/struggles. tail pipe is black as of lately for 2 weeks? the issues started yesterday.

have anyone ever experienced this? and yes she still have emission warranty. CPO just expired as of Feb 2022.

forgot to add, after starting her up, driving for a min or two, the tach drops a bit too low like she wants to stall then revs to 2k by itself then buckling starts then throws glow plug flashing then limp mode starts and she smoothes out. could hear unusual noises at those behaviors.

exhaust smells funny. mixed of diesel and DPF "clean" exhaust. when revving at 2k rpm, saw some black smoke. like some puff. when she stalled at the stop sign, saw little white/black smoke fly past me. this is something new....

I have no firsthand experience with this. I just remember seeing other threads here where the sooty black tailpipe is a symptom of a cracked DPF.

All three of my TDI's have had sparkling clean tailpipes, so any soot at all would be very easy to notice.

Yep coming from the original owner of my old 2011 JSW that I bought brand new and personally racked 300k miles. I have seen how clean my tail pipe was for 200k miles then deleted and huge differences. :)

Scan it and lots will be revealed.

edit: Don't just list the code header... look at all the freeze frame data.... there's a lot more to a code than just the "P" designation. Take it to a dealer and have them fix anything that's covered before you start fixing whatever else is left... if anything.

The fact that he can hear it blocks away and that he's getting insufficient EGR flow codes would lead me to believe there's a massive exhaust leak... like right at the EGR port\manifold..... but I do agree that if left "undiagnosed" the DPF will soon become a victim.

Hmm just did an visual inspection on the bottom tray partially opened, noticed the pass side intercooler hose popped off… Is that a sign of something failing like turbo etc? I haven’t touched those hoses or anything for months months.

Ok it’s literally popped apart. Cleaned it up on the Osiris tray and hose and intercooler pass side port. Just put everything back together then VCDS clear code it all then test drive.

Yep test drove her for half hour, gently driving for 5 mins to let her warm up then WOT several times. Only one code thrown, EGR P0401. Little hesitation and fluctuations while cruising. EGR is done for. She felt little slow than what she used to be.

Yup. They confirmed so far EGR is done for and turbo as well. They still are diagnosing it. I almost never drive this car. Step Daughter does 99 percent and she drove it like a stolen car far too often. Yup I busted her many times on roads before she knew I am nearby by accident. That driving style is not advisable for being driven like a stolen car frequently, correct?

Plus forgot to mention, she tend to run the car idling during her breaks at work and college to run AC. I scolded her not to do that many times. I need your feedback so I can show this to her and her mother what is ok and what is not okay to do.

Impressive! I always told her to go easy when engine is cold. It’s like raw honey being cold and hard to squeeze out of the plastic bottle. Once warmed up, smooth flowing.

Yep. We all run liqui moly top tec 4200. 507.00 vw spec. Oil changes every 3 months due to 10k miles. Yep we all drive a lot.

there's an update:

they replaced HPFP with new fuel meter valve due to they noticed raw fuel odor plus long cranking issues among the fuel lines. As there was a leak on the hose that attaches to the pump... wow!

new EGR cooler, they cleaned the coolant pipe and re-installed. EGR and DPF is still there.

they provided a free oil change including engine air filter, cabin air filter for keeping the car too long with many delays from the promised date plus providing us the 2020 Jetta sedan that never was cleaned up, it was nasty from the previous customer......

grand total of repairs? nearly $4,800!

we got the car back, noticed the car felt slow as I was told while I was at work, came home and test drove... immediately noticed the steering wheel to be slightly off by 10-15 degree hence bad alignment.... taking the car back on this Tuesday.

UPDATE: alignment done. the car drives a ton better now......

These cars are alright with being driven a little harder. Not like you stole it. But a bit harder is good for the emissions. Ideling any dpf car is a bad nono. It'll quickly plug stuff up. Temps aren't high enough to burn stuff off. And you never want to drive anything hard till it's warm. It's a very good way to blow oil seals and hurt bearings.

Why would they not check the Allignment after dropping the subframe.. it's part of it the service...

yup, its unbelievable. I just went there for my coolant reservoir tank replacement and flush coolant as old coolant is turning brown-ish and cannot see my reservoir tank at all... that gotta go. lol anyway 2 hours later, got my car back. found coolant spills all over my engine bay and the mount clip for the coolant hose was loose. took pics and sent to the service writer, he isn't happy so he will throw me a deal on my next visit.

I suspect it's the same "mechanic" who worked on the 13 Jetta worked on my car. I found my steering wheel, door handle and shifter knob to be caked in black... wiped it all off.

yep I gave her a earful lecture about it. I kept busting her speeding and going reckless on lane changing like a Mustang wannabe. her suspension is worn out already at 80k miles, my JSW at 134k miles is much more tighter than her's. that says a lot.

Well the jsw is builtdifferent.i run mine pretty hard. I noticed one strut leaking. I'm at Abt 170k. She'll eventually get a reckless driving ticket. And being she's not paying to have the car fixed she probably doesn't care.

There's a simple fix for this. Find some gutless ratbox without ac for her to drive. She'll learn to appreciate the nice car pretty quick.

in Florida? LOL She will NOT survive for long. grandfather gave her a 2009 Mercury Milan a tad over 100k miles but...... motor made awful smell and such. we felt the car wasn't safe plus kept making steam on windshield constantly while parked. smell was unbearable. that one had V6, very fast. best not. LOL

yep we showed her the $5k repair bill. she turned white faced. we told her once emission warranty expires, shes on her own. we told her that she will need to save up for new tires and struts/shocks soon as I had twice nearly hydroplaned on same day a month ago when I took her car to work while she was having the codes. scary. told her to get tires pronto! (lucky for my experienced defensive driving and car racing days saved the car)

I had a lil 94 escort. Gutless, efficient, reliable, and the ac worked.
