Have the above code. Can only find info on "DPF regen". But read that measured zoot should be 45 or below for driving regen and 35-40 for stationary regen (group 241 or 108). Tried security login 27971 for stationary regen, basic settings, regen DPF while standing. Getting Error.

Is "DPF regen" different from "NOx cat regen"?

If so: how do do a NOx cat regen (as code requires)?
If not: what can I do the run regen even so measured zoot values don't seem to 'qualify', yet, getting NOx code?

NOx regen and DPF regen are two different modes but both are very similar in the way they work. However NOx regen gets the exhaust much hotter than usual dpf regen.

"NOX regen while driving" should be under adaptations on VCDS. It's been awhile so not 100%.
Make sure there's no emissions or engine faults (other than Nox regen required code) make sure you have over half a tank of fuel and a good straight stretch of road that has a speed limit over 50 mph. Last time in needed to do one on a 2010 golf it took 30 mins to complete.

Will get full scan and see if I find "NOX regen" somewhere else (not in basic settings, but adaptions?). Was hoping to have 'stationary' option as with DPF regen so I can do the regen this weekend (and not having to drive 1 hour in 6 inches of snow at 2000 rpm).

Looks like you need to do a long drive, it sounds like the car isn't being driven long enough for the cat to do it's regen too

If you glance through this thread it talks about needing a long drive

And this this link suggests 40-75mph, needs the engine fully warmed up then the actual regen takes 40-50 minutes of sustained driving. That's for the cat regen.

But it also sounds like you're having to crappy weather to manage it just now.

Looks NOx regen only with driving.
Possible that it clears itself IF taken on a long drive? Or does it have to be 'activated' via Rosstech in Adaption?
It sounds like it's a long drive only for the cat, first it has to reach a high enough temp then it should start burning the stuff up.

Is your coolant getting up to full temperature?
A bad thermostat can preclude nox regen.
(and yes you must be driving for nox regen to occur)

There are just too many to list....
If the coolant drops below about 90C, it won't ever do the deNOX catalyst regen. Drive it and see.... these often need thermostats to allow a fix. You can initiate a manual regen while driving, but it will fail if the coolant temp isn't sufficient.

Made an account just to reply in layman's terms here.
There's two separate regens. The DPF regen is the most common one. Usually you may hear the fans running and get a nice power boost during the DPF regen. It's pretty brainless and requires no effort.
The cat also regens as others have already stated, which I don't recall seeing in the car's manual anywhere BTW. This is a much less common regen and I think my first one was needed well into the 4th year I owned the car since I don't drive much.
You may have heard the high fan cycle often for a couple days. It may be going off and on in stop and go traffic. You probably have the cheese grater light on the dash, meaning it's been trying to regen the cat and failed several times likely due to the vehicle being shut off.
That simply means it's time for a nice long drive on the highway. Plan to drive about 15 to 25 continuous minutes one way. Seems to work best if you can go about 70mph although there's no need to exceed the speed limit if that's not possible since it will happen eventually anyway.
No scan tool or special process is needed. Although it is handy to have one plugged to ensure the coolant temp gets high enough if not you may need to replace the thermostat, which I hear can be a common problem on the MK6 TDIs plus it's in an absolutely terrible location (yay). If there's an issue with the thermostat in winter you may be able to employ radiator blocking as a temporary work around until it's warm enough to tear the whole front of the engine bay out to get to the thermostat.
Anyway, drive on the highway after the vehicle is at operating temperature until the cheese grater light goes out. If it comes back on the next day do it again. After my most recent cat regen I think it's probably ideal to continue driving for at least 20 minutes after the light goes out to avoid having it come back on.

Want to do the NOx regen while driving today. What are the securit codes? I think the NOx is in Adaption (while the DPF is in in another section)?

Entered the sec code 12233 in adaption, block 18 (NOx regen). Entered 1 in "new value", "Test", Save. Then drove at 2200 rpm, 5th gear,. 64 mph steady foreever (more than 50 min). Don't know what the starting values were, but it settled for 3.27 NOx load and 3.0 calculated Soot value. Dash warning light and error code gone.

Not impressed with the process. Can't they show 'progress'? What is the end value supposed to be? Did it even work?

I know this is an older thread but I saw this info in OBDEleven to check NOX regen status @kraftwerkturbo: under Engine - live data - channel 104 - the block 1 value (if I recall correctly) changes to 0x0FF02 when the NOX regen is done. Will take a screenshot and update this post later for future visitors.

Was just poking around for further info on the NOX regen because MVB 104.1 flipped through a couple values for me, from 0x0FF20, ending at 0x0FF01 and I'm wondering what that means... Going to give it another go tonight and hopefully it will flip to 0x0FF02 finally...

There are just too many to list....
I have found that those MVB 104/1 values don't seem to coincide with what you'd expect. Because I've had them get to '02' and you think it has finished, and then the next day the warning lamp has returned.... then doing nothing but driving it and the warning lamp goes out, and all the readiness is set.

So....

But I always, ALWAYS, drive the car and monitor the coolant temp. Because a marginal thermostat often causes this. There is a TSB about it. If it can't stay 92C+, it is bad. The TSB says it must not go below 87C, but I just know after replacing the thermostat they are generally able to stay well above that.

Was just poking around for further info on the NOX regen because MBV 104.1 flipped through a couple values for me, from 0x0FF20, ending at 0x0FF01 and I'm wondering what that means...
0x0FF20 is SOX regen (Bit 5 active) 0010 0000b

As always, very much appreciate your input oilhammer! Will be sure to monitor that when I give it another go.

Thank you KERMA! Based on that, I'm guessing that I didn't let the NOX regen cycle fully finish despite running at the specified speed/RPM for 50+ mins. Is there a legend somewhere that'll help me decode the other values?

that FFXX number corresponds to the state bit that's set in the operating mode message bit mask. (1 = "bit set") That bitmask is a 32 bit message but I'll show a few of these in a truncated (8 bit) version. These are also what you'll see in the "DPF st" display in polar fis.

FF01 = bit 0 active (0000 0001) = operating mode 0 = non regen mode aka "normal mode"

FF02 = Bit 1 active (0000 0010) = operating mode 1 = DPF regen mode

FF04 = Bit 2 active (0000 0100) = operating mode 2 = DPF regen mode 2 - "DPF regen heating mode" for additional heatup when at an idle etc.

FF10 = Bit 4 active (0001 0000) = operating mode 4 = nox regen mode, meaning nox regen is occurring

So, when you see FF10 in MVB 104, it indicates nox regen happening. It should only last a few seconds, maybe 10-20 seconds, then switch back to FF01. It will only happen at relatively steady state conditions, like cruising on the highway or around town at relatively steady speed with no gear shifts.

If you have the "nox regen required" fault code even after seeing several "FF10" to briefly appear in MVB 104.1 then likely the ecu is "requesting" to enter FF10 but some prerequisite condition isn't giving a full release of the operating state. Like Oilhammer said, the thermostat is a very common reason.

NOx regen and sox regen use what's known as a "rich mode" where a/f ratio is tightly monitored and controlled using maf/o2 sensor readings (exactly like a gasser lambda control) during late post injection. So one of those sensors, or an egt sensor, being on the fritz will also lock you out of nox regen.

Amazing, somehow managed to avoid finding your post in all my searching, ha. Thanks so much, going to read through that thread later tonight. How did you learn this?!

Edit: forgot who I was talking to 😆
