2012 same-year engine differences

Every time I go to the dealer to pick up an oil filter element, they want the VIN. They say there’s different filters for that car.
What is the difference, or was there a manufacture date cut-off point?

Oil filters on CJAAs (2010-2014) are all the same. Dealers are just in the habit of asking for VINs.

There are three different potential oil filter housing assembly suppliers for the CJAA: Purflux, Mann+Hummel, and Mahle. Although every CJAA I can ever think of has had the Mann assembly on it, and we use a Mann element in them. However technically the filter elements are interchangeable, and they only list one of those regardless of whose assembly it is.

But that's why they ask.

The fuel filter can vary on this model engine. I learned that the hard way.

Yes, it can, but it's not reliably identifiable by VIN.
