B7 Passat fall '12
My wife's car is a 3 year old Honda Odyssey. As recently as 3 years ago, I had bought only Hondas for 15 years until the new Accord came out, and I couldn't stand the seat and bought a 2010 VW CC. (which was one of the best cars I ever owned and the reason I got a 2012 Passat TDi).
Anyhow, the Odyssey has been one of the least reliable vehicles I have ever owned, and we have been seriously considering replacing it. If VW sold the Passat AllTrack here (or the Toureg TDI wasn't 50k), it would be gone. Here's what's gone wrong with it un 36k miles.
1. Two weeks ago - Complete Power Steering Failure - New Rack and Pump.
2. 6 months ago - Navigation System Failure - New Nav
3. 8 months ago - Battery died in the middle of vacation.
4. Last year - Power Seat failed on drivers side - New Seat
5. 1st Year - Torque Converter failed - New Torque Converter and Transmission.
6. On third set of front Brakes. Second Master Cylinder.
7. Rattles, Rattles, Rattles.
8. Burns out a set of tires every 18k.
9. Gets consistantly 16mpg no matter what.
that said, my 08 [64k miles] pilot has been flawless, zero problems so before we start comparing VW reliability vs. honda and toyota, we should all look at the facts. i'm buying a tdi B7 this fall to replace the pilot [16 mpgs] and i'm buying a 100k extended warranty.

ourlee: The only reason I brought up my Odyssey issue was simply to point out that every manufacturer has cars that are lemons, and that all of them break. I certainly didn't mean to impune Honda, overall.

You're quite right. The facts are what they are, and VW still is way behind the leaders in reliability.

Good luck...you'll probably be getting a '13, right? There won't be any leftovers!

When I purchased my Jetta TDI in 2001, I saw issues pop up on this forum, including bad turbos, and worried. Now 10 years later, I wonder why I worried....
Again, I hate that this happened to the OP. It's really disheartening to have a new car experience ruined by the failure of a vital component.[/QUOTE]

I got the same "No don't EVER buy a VW product" when I bought my 2002 TDI Jetta....10. Years. Ago...200K.

I'm sorry Ricer fans...German cars are just better.

Show me your:TL, G35/7, TSX...don't even know what fun cars Toyota makes..."yawn".

7500 miles and the turbo is dead. Took it to dealership, and after they did a diagnostic and called down to HQ in Virginia, it seems I need a whole new turbo system. Not what I wanted to hear to say the least........should've bought a Toyota.
To be fair, you did knowingly buy a first-year car with a turbo and its a risk that every one of us has taken. That's like complaining that your mini doesn't have enough trunk space!

Everyone remembers the 300ZX Twin Turbo horror stories from the 80's....

This is the same argument that I hear from bikers all the time. They want a BMW but there is something like a 4% failure rate on the final drive and it costs the most of the value of the bike to repair (if you cant do it yourself).
Inevitably many "sky is falling" threads appear online causing a panic from all the BMW owners and all the while many of the forum regulars have over 100k miles on their bikes (mine has about 80k).

I wouldn't expect volumes of heartfelt sentiment from this crowd. Nobody wants someone's car to break only to have expensive repairs required but again, you bought a brand new German engineered car that's being built in a brand new plant..... with a turbo. To ANY car person that spells higher than normal maintenance and not only possibly failures - Probable failures.

You wanna drive a Camry? Go drive a Camry.

it seems Honda completely fell off the face of the earth in the last few years. I have heard some really bad things lately about Honda cars and motorcycles (dont even get me started there).
I have a friend with an Odyssey and while it drives nice he has nothing but problems with it too.
i have almost 300k on a 1990 Accord and I love that car to death. Never had a real problem with it - only stuff you get on a car with 300,000 miles.

thanks for the many responses and condolences. So I have more good news for all the skeptics. The parts that my Passat needs aren't in the US, so now I have to wait another week for the parts to be shipped from Germany. I asked my service manager for the computer code to appease all the dbag doubters of my claim. This is what he gave me: P029900. Apparently it means turbo charger failure/underperform. Let me know if anyone also wants me to post a copy of my loaner car receipt they gave me.
wow.....I would think the last people in the world you would want to take a smelly fart on where the ones trying to help you.
I would imagine that part of the program is now over.

Google helped on the DTC. Apparently the coding has increased from 2 bits to 3 bits. For this code drop the last 2 zeroes and you will get the code to come up. Hopefully the new turbo fixes the problem but that code can be caused by more than the turbo.
