Bought a brand new Jetta Highline 2.0L TDI with a 6 spped manual. What would be the lowest rpm this engine can safely handle? At 100km/h in 6th rpm is 1500 is it safe to run this way?

sure why not? its designed for this....just dont lug it if you hit a grade....might want to hit 5th.....we run ours in 6th at 100 all the time...but we also flog it daily through the gears, 3-4000rpm.....

1500 is safe enough if your goal is mileage and AFTER your engine is properly broken-in and if you are on level ground. I would not put too much load on it at that speed. Read this first:

However, you will not have access to full boost until you are over about 1750 or 1800 rpms. I personally like to try to keep it over 1800 so that in an emergency I have access to full power. Since you have a 2011, I will assume that it is still pretty new. Do not be afraid to push it pretty hard at least occasionally (after the engine is warm). Your car will thank you for it in the long run. As you get used to the car, it will tell you how it wants to be driven. Listen carefully.

I'm going to assume that the 100 rpms is a typo.

Have Fun!

Boy I like your answers JSWTDI09 - although I always come in and screw something up.

Maybe I should convert this to Km/h but when driving on the freeway it seems to me that 60+mph is fine for 6th gear. I will pull a grade at 65mph no sweat in 6th - if I was trying to pass on the grade I would probably drop to 5th. Anything lower than 60 even if level I usually go to 5th and anything lower than 50 I drop to 4th and so on. Just seems like the car is happier. Hope that made sense.

I think he was referring to Km/h not RPMS.
