Got 46 mpg on a trip this morning on our 2010 with 6M. The tank value showing is 44 mpg. Last 2 tankfuls have been just above 42 mpg. Think it's getting broken in now at 17k miles.

Before about 15k miles, mileage around here was just above 40 mpg. Got 42 mpg on 2 trips (about 450 miles each way) to Columbus, OH. Suspect the highway mileage will probably go up to around 44-46 now.

Current Mileage reading = 13,180
Average accumulative MPG from day one = 50.44 mpg
Last ten fill-ups = 50.20 mpg
Every fill-up, every Saturday, Average 17.19 gallons
I carry an additional 5 gallon container, which allows me to fill-up just once a week.
I have found that the dash display readings to be not accurate, with 5% + error, both for day trips, as well as fill-up to fill-up trips.
I.E. > a spreadsheet is far more accurate.
Find someone with a VCDS and adjust the multiplier for the MFD display of MPG.;)

Dash display on our 6M is VERY accurate.

Got 49.9 mpg on the roundtrip last night of 18 miles. Only one stop sign on the way to/from.

Cannot believe that a DSG would get that kind of fuel economy, especially when new.
Perhaps a manual 6 MT, but not when brand new.

Something is simply not accurate. Odometer is off or your gallons used is off or?

Yup, I have no idea how he is getting those #s. I am in the mid/high 30s. Happy with that but to be at 50 with a DSG is unheard of esp over 13k miles.

I have a 2011 JSW 6M with 12,500 miles. All stock, standard tire pressure. I have filled tank 21 times.
MPG average to date is 47.7. For just the last 10 tanks it's 49.7.
Best tank was 56.6 all hwy (5,900 odo).
Next best was 54.0 all my usual suburban mix 30/70 city/hwy (11,500 odo).
I have had 11 tanks over 48. Of those 6 were over 50.
MFI fairly consistent at +2.5%.
One 240 mile road trip recently got 60 mpg on MFI which would correct to 58.4 (10,200 odo).

I drive at or a bit under speed limit, slow up hills by 3-5, a little AC. A lot if it's over 84 or so. I do the same 43 mile loop every morning and typically get upper 50's on it (MFI) and once got 63.6 MFI which I would correct to 61.9 based on my observed error. This loop has a long stretch of construction where the flow is smooth and consistent but at 50MPH. That helps. And it is fairly flat. I see upper 60's to mid 70's on the instant readout very consistently through these parts.

For what all that's worth...

Dude, you need to enter your numbers into Fuelly. Of 273 Golf MY 2011 TDIs the highest average mpg is 49 and I'm pretty sure those above 42 were all manuals. You are a true hyper miler :D

Would not doing so throw off the odometer readings also ?

In other words, is there a separate adjustment just for the MFD '2' ?
Yes, there is a multiplier to just adjust the mpg calculations.

This is not the same adjustment as the distance impulse multiplier which does affect the odometer and speedometer readings.

First tank averaged out to 32.9 MPG
Freeway at 65-70mph I get about 36-38mpg
PSI is at 40.
Shell Diesel.

I know plenty claim ridiculous gas mileage... but what should I expect from this car?

All my other cars have always gotten city EPA +10% so this car is in line.

A bit disappointing since I was hoping to average ~40.

I am going to try out Diesel Kleen with the next tank.
I am *exactly* in your boat... don't bother with DK, it's useless. I think it actually ADVERSELY affected my MPG.

I now have 28,000 miles on my 2010 DSG, and my MPG hasn't improved in the least. No "break-in" improvement here.

I too was hoping for 40+ MPG, but even when I let up on the throttle, and get sucked into that lying bastage of an MFD (I'm like Charlie Brown and the MFD is Lucy holding the football), I still can't crack 38 MPG per (calculated) tank.

I've seen MANY insane claims for MPG, but I take those with a significant grain of salt. I also noticed that that HWY MPG estimate on the new car sticker DROPPED from 42 MPG HWY (on my 2010 sticker) to 39 MPG (on your 2011 sticker).

I believe the 2011 is the more "honest" estimate. I can't average >40 MPG driving 50 MPH on a level surface with a tailwind (exaggeration, but you know what I mean).

If you're averaging ~35 MPG in mixed driving on your 2009-2012 TDI DSG, you are indeed "average." It's what the rest of the universe gets, and I don't think you will see much, if ANY, improvement as you pile the miles on. It's just the nature of this beast.

I'm right there with ya... I just clicked over 3000 and even on all highway trips...I can't break 40MPG to save my life. I'm not thinking it's coming any time soon either.

If your not getting 40+ MPG from a 2010 or later Jetta TDI (DSG or M) there is something wrong. It's ether a problem with the car or the foot. I have about 13,000 miles on my 2011 JSW 6M and I am consistently getting 50MPG tanks with my regular suburban mix. Last two tanks were 54 and 52 (calculated). I have gotten 58 on a 240 mile road trip. My mileage is real. I have the receipts. No additives, no mods. I have seen constant improvement since I got the car. My data is here (all calculated - no MFI):

The point of this thread is that DSG transmission cars get significantly worse mileage than manuals. Yours is a manual. A friend of mine here (btcost) has a 2012 Sportwagen and is getting 44 MPG on trips going 70-80 MPH. He's only got a couple thousand miles on it. But it's a manual.

I have noticed that the DSG folks that are getting particularly poor mileage are also either in the West or in places that have been very hot this summer. The combination of arid air, wind, and lots of A/C use significantly affects FE on all TDIs. Maybe you'll see mileage improve as things cool off.

My 2011 Golf TDI DSG has been really good so far

6.5 L/100km (36.2 MPG) average in the city
5.5 L/100km (42.8 MPG) average on a round trip (3700KM) from the prairies through the rocky mountains to the BC coast and back, no A/C on the way out but A/C on the way back.
Lowest I got was 4.7 L/100km (50 MPG) on a 600 km return trip but the elevation change was 600 ft drop but the road wasn't very flat.

Hwy speed limit is 110 Km/h so my speed is between 110 km/h and 130 km/h.

Hope this gives you a better picture the Canadian version is rated 6.8 city and 4.6 hwy so I happy with what I'm getting but since I only have 26,000 Km (16,155.6 miles) on it so far I'm looking forward to it getting better as time goes on.

Yes, that's a fair point. But a difference of 20% seems too large. Something seems wrong with that. The EPA rating is basically the same (30/42) and while real world will vary I would not expect it to vary that much?

I have a 2011 JSW with the DSG. I commute round trip 76 miles per day, driving slow and setting the CC at 65. I seem to average right around 36mpg. I have 19,033 miles on the car, bought it brand new. AC on or off doesn't seem to matter.
I broke into the 40's one time on a long trip.
I have been very disappointed with the millage I get with this car. I was expecting 40 and maybe into the low 40's.

I have about 7000 miles and the best I have gotten is 38 on two trips from Houston to Oklahoma City, AC on most of the time and no faster than 72MPH. My MFD showes 2 MPG better than what I am really getting. Back and forth to work some stop and go I get 32 to 34. I use my cruise most of the time. I have DSG and use mostly Shell and I think the AC off will increase the milage by 2 MPG hard to really tell as conditions are never the same. Interesting point about the MFD, I had one tank that got very low and the MFD said I had 10 miles remaining when I filled it with 14.4 gallons. I guess that part of the MFD is very accurate, you would think in that regard it would be more conservative.

That is the same for me; I'm finding a 3.+% error factor in the MFD reading. My last fill-up (This Saturday morning) had my MFD cumulative reading 1.8 miles more mileage than my calculations presented. This has been constant from purchase in late May '11.

Just got my 2011 Golf and got this on the way into work.
Its 75-80% highway and the rest city driving. I did not have the cruise set and was varying the speed/rpm for the break in process.

55mpg on posted roads and 65-70 in the 65mph roads. Varying about 5mph as i drove into work.

This is what it showed when I parked at work. A 49 mile trip.

The highest i saw on the way in was 43.2mpg.

Most recent trip to Wisc to visit one of my Border Collie's rescuers. 175 miles each way. No AC, no heavy traffic, a little construction. Avg speed 65. DSG. MDF readout 43 outbound, 47 return. Assume due to wind as route same. MDF generally 1 to 2 mpg off upon Fuelly entry. Filled today and tank was just over 41 (due to 135 miles mostly city driving prior to trip). My Fuelly 10 tank average is 39.9 mpg. I'm a spirited driver, no babying.

Getting above 38 with a dsg takes feathering. Get to target speed and lighten throttle until mpgs pop, but speed holds. It takes some practice and concentration. I normally get 41 on my mdf on way home from work when on backroad. Pretty consistent. I was on hand free call Friday and wasn't paying attention to mpgs. When I got home mdf was at 36. All seemed the same except my attention.

Knowing throttle position helps. I use my scanguage. I had to find the formula for that as cr ECM not show standard formula. I posted in OBD forum awhile back or pm me if interested.

PS. My lower fuelly due to my pulling up my break in period which was 35 mpg due to sport mode driving exclusively.

PSS. Trip was so cool. My wife and I rescued 2 BCs and the family that fostered a real hard case for 6 months, my Oreo, got a chance to see her after almost 2 years. It was such a cool reunion for them. Not sure who had more fun.

I have a DSG w/ ~15K mi on it. I drive probably 1/3 city (or backroads) and the remainder highway. Hand calculation gives me a rather consistent 40 mpg tank full, but I dont tend to speed. I haven't yet noticed an increase as the miles rack up. Just my $0.02.

Today's trip in. Up .6 mpg from yesterday to 44.1mpg. And that's with me accelerating hard from about half the stop lights on my 49 mile trip into work.

I can definitely live with 44mpg. Anything over the EPA 42 its rated at is a damn nice perk. Its also nice seeing 300 miles on a half tank of fuel. 330 miles was pretty much empty with the WRX.

Time will tell what my over all mpg was on the first tank after I do the math at the pump this week. Wonder how far off the MDF will be.

Sounds about right for a new vehicle. May take 25-50k miles to break in right.

Is this the 2.0L TDI that's in my Passat ?

Watch out for the fuel at the pump. Look for a blue and black sticker that says, "5 to 20% biodiesel added". Avoid it if possible. Look for a station near the highway. They have full blooded fuels for the trucks. Another thing about the fuels: they've taken most of the lubricant out of it and there are record numbers of fuel injector pumps being repaired on diesels 2006 and older. Unless VW has a stand alone lubricating system, you need to add some Power Service or Stanadyne additive for cetane and lubricant.

These partial biodiesel fuels give lubricant, yet rob us of about 4-6 mpg !!! I just use the additive and buy the real fuel.

My vehicle gets 39-40mpg average throughout the year. 44 highway.

Just filled up my 2012 Jetta TDI for the first time. Did a 450 mile 2-day round trip, mostly hiway, and got 45mpg on my first tank! That's running 75+ on the hiway, 2 people with trunkful of luggage. Can't wait to see what it maxes out at.

tank 1. 32.9 MPG
tank 2. 37.x MPG
tank 3. 33.3 MPG
Tank 4. 35.2 MPG

lol you're posting two digits past the whole MPG number.

There is always going to be someone that gets really great MPG. It also depends on driving style and location etc.

What are your tire PSI?
What speed do you travel on the freeway? 1900-2000rpms suggests you go about 60mph in LA? everyone usually goes 80 down there! haha
Do you follow big rigs?

If you haven't seen this thread, 50 mpg per tank at between 59-62 mph (1900-2000 rpm with DSG) is achievable. It will take light throttle, likely no a/c, high tire pressure, maybe oversize tires, and virtually no stop and go traffic, but it can be done. It certainly will take a lot of patience and perserverance (both which I don't have) to achieve 50 mpg tank after tank.:D
