I'm in the market for a commuter vehicle again, after selling my 2010 JSW two years ago. I loved my '10. I see that my local car lots have a couple of JSW's to chose from, but I haven't kept up with the news around these vehicles since then, so I'd like to ask your opinions:

2011 JSW, $7500, 52k miles
2012 JSW, $9000, 64k miles
2014 JSW, $6300, 172k miles

Which would you choose? What should I be looking out for? My '10 had the HPFP issue. I also recall the clutch needed to be replaced at around 180k miles (it was a 6MT). I do most of my own wrenching, so I'm not opposed to doing my regular maintenance items. I sold my RossTech VAGCOM cable, so I will probably need to get another one.

2011 is definitely a dang good deal. Only con is 2011 don’t have rear view camera like 2014 does and 2014 has high mileage, wow I am surprised dealer would sell that car with high mileage.

I'd go after the 11 or 12. Too many miles on that 14.

And I believe warranty for 14 might be out or close. Thats why I bought the 2014 JSW DSG at 27k that comes with 10 years/120k miles warranty that covers from HPFP to DPF to in-tank pump to engine and transmission. Nothing can best that. Go for the best bang for the buck which is the 2011, its a no brainer.

Feel free to correct me on the warranty for 2014 that he listed.

Before you purchase, please do a carfax and look how long she sat and if its 1-2 years, please have a mechanic of vw to take a look in the fuel tank because mold can develop during 1-2 years.

How do I know? After 5 failed HPFP’s and they finally look in the tank and oh! It has mold in there. They finally cleaned it up. Geez!

My old 2011 JSW DSG ran flawlessly almost 300k miles without a single hiccup or needing an tow truck for 8 years and this 2014 was a nightmare.

All of these fixed cars with DSG got either 10 years/120k from first day of in service or 4 years/48k miles from date of fix, whichever is greater. I think the manuals were different and the 15s were different.

Are any CPO? The dealership can ad CPO(it cost them $ though). If they had the fix I think the 11 & 12 would qualify as they are under 75k miles. At least around Ca. I've seen the prices drop.

I'd vote 11 or 12 depending on what options they have/you want. I had same requirements and love my 11' w/ 69k for $8500 w/ cpo coverage. My research found 11 and up fairly comparable. If you look for 11' and want comparable features to the 14, look for 17" porto rims, that is the top package. I.E. the std, package 1, package 2. The options increased as the years got later. I have learned the hard way that ownership/low miles trump newer.

And I believe warranty for 14 might be out or close. Your shared experience has been appreciated, it just may save a HPFP or 2. I for one always did occasional biocide on my old Passat TDI. It had original pump @ 225k. I think that is an important maintenance item for the health of it.
