They have a surprisingly affordable laser guided cruise control on the A6 golf here too. Any info on that?
No definitive info, but I doubt they'll offer it on a VW in the US, for the same product differentiation reason. People have to have some reason to justify paying the premium for an A3.

On the other hand, the Prius is available with all the fancy luxury options, so maybe VW will be forced to offer them as well.

I always thought the big black hole or the big chrome snout looked cheap. I think the 2-bar grille looks classy, and looks like a grille should. Just like my Mk4. :)

Was at the closest dealer recently, and a 2010 TDI Jetta sedan had a "Market Adjustment" of $2000. The salesman became downright insulting when I told him I would not consider paying the extra $2K, let alone MSRP. However, consider the break-even point over a gas model, even another make such as a very reliable Honda for instance, when one pays extra for the diesel engine to begin with, and then another $2K. During the Cash For Clunkers program they may have managed to get the markup, but a different ball game now when customers aren't blinded by the $4500 CFC kicker. Besides, the soon-to-be-restyled Jetta TDI's are not going to be in high demand once the already redone 2010 TDI SportWagen arrives.
Looks like you guys are giving back the $2000 my dealer knocked off the price back in June. Such balance in nature...

Slightly off-topic: Guess the number of Golf/Jettas Volkswagen sold this August in Germany.

No, you're wrong.
31,527.

That's 94% more than in August 2008.

The Golf/Jetta alone has 11.5% of the German new car market. The Volkswagen brand has 22.59%. (Up from 19,39 in 8/2008)

All the Volkswagen brands combined have 35% of the market.

Aren't those mind-boggling numbers?
(Toyota has 3.91%, up from 3.59% in 2008)

It's amazing how drastically market share varies by region in the auto market. IIRC those market share numbers for VW & Toyota are approximately reversed in the US.

No, there are a lot of mechanical/structural changes underneath.

Exact release date?

I called my local dealer to find when I can actually purchase a 2010 Golf TDI. His answer was November. Does anyone know if this is accurate? What have you heard? Anyone on a waiting list?

Was to get 2009...but that is another story.

Getting 2010 JSW for 2009 price and no upcharges. Build date is October 12, 2009. Should get it first/second week of November.

October seems too soon -- only 11 days away. So November sounds about right. But I wouldn't be surprised if the new Golf TDIs don't show up until January.

The European version of cash-for-clunkers depleted the stocks of Volkswagens in Europe. So new Golf TDIs for North America have to compete in production planning with the need to restock dealerships in Germany, etc.

Well the new GTI is sitting on my local dealer's lot so at least I can go sit in and get a feel for the new cars. I heard the 2010 Jetta Sport Wagons shipped to dealers on Saturday as well.

The three VW dealers I called all told me different dates on Golf TDI availability.

Dealer #1) Late December '09
Dealer #2) After the New Year (January '10)
Dealer #3) Early Spring

Your guess is as good as mine. They don't even have Golf TDI brochures yet. Just a post card sized hand out. No price info either.

Either they are lying to try to get you to buy a 2.5 or they are stupid. All the Golf prices are in the system right now. The configuration for the launch cars is set as well, but there is no word on when they will arrive.

$5000 more than a gasoline Golf version? That's a lot of fuel. Has anyone calculated the miles you'd have to drive to make that cost up?

What mileage does the Golf TDI get? Is it better than the Jetta TDI? I fear this vehicle is going to be a flop. Too expensive and too small. I'd take a Jetta TDI at the SAME PRICE AS A GOLF in a second. I think I'll be keeping my 35 MPG Saturn Ion I for now. $22000 plus sales tax in NY would bring this Golf up to close to $25K! For a tiny hatchback? Forget about it.

The VW dealers around here have no idea when they will come into the USA. The frustration in their voices is telling. The hype may pass if fuel prices keep falling.

The difference in price between 2-door Golfs is $4700.
The difference in price between 4-door Golfs is $3600.

The payback is still roughly 100k miles, so it's still worthwhile to go with a TDI. However, most Americans don't know how to work a calculator.

There are plenty of people who would prefer a Golf over a Jetta. Many people like the utility of a hatchback. And it's not tiny. The A5's were rated 16 cu.ft. for the Jetta, 15 cu.ft. for the Golf. This year, it looks like they're only measuring what you can fit under the cargo cover, so they've downgraded it to 12.4 cu.ft. by not taking the full vertical height. The Jetta has slight pockets on the side so that you can fit your golf clubs in there sideways. But really it's not that much bigger.

Plus the markup isn't just for the TDI engine. The markup is going from a base model Golf to a well equipped Golf that also has a TDI engine. Granted, you're SOL if you want a base model TDI, but don't mix up the costs and assume that 4K is just for the oil burner. At a quick glance you also get:

multifunction steering wheel
center arm rest
bluetooth
touchscreen radio
satellite radio
fog lights
sport suspension
17 inch alloy wheels

Personally, I'd want most of that anyway, plus some of the options like moonroof and fancy headlights, and I'm willing to pay the extra. I'll be gladly trading in my 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid for a car that I'll actually enjoy driving.

Right. The payback is 100k miles or so, AND you get those goodies to boot. :)

Oh, and resale value will be higher, too.

I think it's interesting that the Navi unit is only available on the TDI versions. That'll tick off some hopeful gasser Golfers.

US Dollar dropping in value like a rock.
The Jetta TDIs are priced in a range from stripped-down models to fully-loaded models -- though some dealerships may not have any stripped-down models. The Golf TDIs are all almost fully loaded, that's why their starting price is so high.

I predict there will be stripped-down Golf TDIs, but probably not until Q3 of 2010 or later. Remember, all Golfs come from Germany (or elsewhere in the Euro Zone), so VAG doesn't make any money on Golfs. Maybe they make money on the add-ons like satellite radio and nav systems.

i'm saving up cash allready. and hope that i'll still qualify for $1300 credit.
i think i asked this before: so there's a 60,000 cars sold cut off point for the diesel credit. but that was for Jetta and JSW together right?
and would a GOLF be considered a new car? or would it fall under Jetta's 60,000 unit limit since it has same engine?
because if it falls under jetta i'm afraid that by the time i get my GOLF, mid/late '10, VW will be sold through 60,000 TDI"s, but if GOLF gets its own 60000 limit i should be ok.

Hell, I'm already thinking about trading my 09 Jetta back in just so I can have a golf with bluetooth, navi, and HID's. Oh, and I like 17" wheels and fog lights. All stuff my car did not come with!

Stopped by the dealer to take a look at the 2010 Golf (2.5) today. They also had a 2010 JSW TDI (sold).

Hohum, Cargo area / configuration / design is as bad as the rabbit was. Fold flat pass. front seat is gone.

Still no cloth seats for the 2010 JSW.

I'm seriously disappointed

I imagine the tax credit limit is for cars from each manufacturer. Whether all Jettas of a combination of Jettas and Golfs, when the limit is hit then no more tax credits.
