Hello,

I just bought a new 2010 Jetta Tdi last November. I love the Tdi motor. The manual states to use a VW 507 00 grade oil. My question is what oil (brand) and filter do you recommend?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section...

Cheers...

Welcome aboard, Defender! You can buy the Mobil 507.00 oil at PepBoy.

Hengst makes some of the finer filters out there. They truly are a step above the others.

Did they not extend the prepaid 3 each 10,000 miles maintenance intervals to you? It will be 40,000 miles before you will even need to THINK about oil filters, 507 oils etc. Depending on how long it takes you to roll 40,000 miles, a lot can change in that time. Long story short, keep gathering information and data and don't pre buy.... YET. IF and when you do some of the best products are Mobil One 5w30 ESP and Total Quartz INEO 5w30, again both VW 507.00.

So for example I actually did the same types of inquires for a brand new 09 TDI. At the time, the only two products VW 507.00 were the VW dealers Castrol LL3 (gold bottles), which coincidently some dealers didn't even know was supposed to be used and ELF 5w30 VW507. FF a little and lo and behold Mobil One 5w30 ESP hits the market and IMMEDIATELY hits the BACK ORDER status with only one distributor doing an active market in that product and for premium prices + shipping. ELF not too long later is bought up by Total (french company) and not too long after that has its Total Quartz INEO 5w30 product hit the markets. So 2 years later and 20,000 miles, I still haven't even touched any of the Total Quartz INEO 5w30 504/507 product I bought in early 09.

Sir...that is if you let the dealer do your oil change. I for one would have that occur as a last resort. My first change was a total blow...they added 1.5 qt too much! Not every dealer or every tech is like that I know...but that is my experience. As for buying oil, I would just stick with the Castrol in the gold bottle. It works fine and is around $8 a liter at a dealer. Read around on here...you will find out a lot of good information.

I use Mobil-1 5W-30 ESP and Mann filters exclusively.

I chose to forego the free maintenance from the dealerships. There are no dealerships in my area that I can trust to be competent. I was fortunate to get my oil for $4.00 per liter (thanksgiving sale) and my filters for free from the supplier. VW's 'free' service was just too pricey for me.

I would suggest that is real life, there is little differences in filters or oil brands as long as they meet VW specs. I am not suggesting that there are no differences, but we just don't see problems caused by failure of oil, filters etc. as long as they are used as prescribed. No need to change them more often or look for something better.

Yes, I would agree on some to many levels. From the statistical specifications view (VW 507.00), it can be argued (all things being equal, and let me be one of the first to say; they NEVER are) the specification/s was designed to yield minimum results. This does NOT preclude "maximum results and beyond". Further, we know that individuals in a group AND individual vehicles combined with those vehicles show variation/s. The "minimum to the MAXIMUM" results do not limit, destroy, inhibit variation, per se. To add to the mix, it has been shown that almost ANY OCI (for the purposes of discussion) from 1,000 miles to 30,000 miles (min of 30 point intervals, but as you can tell, it rises to almost infinite) any OCI is pretty much statistically just fine. There is of course variation . On another thread we have also seen that Break IN OCI recommendations@ 10,000 miles OCIs using factory fill, shows almost "cookie cutter" type results. Again, even as there IS variation.

There are slightly different dynamics for the specifications on the oem/oem variant oil filters. Suffiice to say an oem to oem spin offs (vendors that make oem filters making the same filters marketed under their own brand names, ie., Hengst, Mann, Bosch, etc.) can run a full 50,000 kms (31,069 miles) AND beyond ( with an unknown safety factor).

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on doing all my oil changes. The dealer said this motor can go 10k miles b/t oil changes  I've always done 3k miles /3 month on all my cars and plan to do the same on my Tdi.

Cheers...

For a lot of reasons, not a good idea at all. While a lot of folks would disagree with me (actually not me, I am just a messenger so to speak, who actually follows his own advice), 10,000 miles VW oem recommended OCI's are almost total over kill.

Indeed 50,000 kms (converts to 31,069 miles) is FAR from UNREASONABLE : http://www.lubadmin.com/upload/produit/FichePDF/lang_1/5833.pdf Indeed a VW specification 507.00 oil can NOT be called a VW 507.00 specification oil without passing the up to 50,000/31,069 miles specification and test.

Let me put it in the venacular. What possible motive can a vendor like Total have to say/ recommend 50,000 km /31,069 miles, when it should be working on cultivating people who like to change oil @ 3,000 miles ????????? This is 10.36 times GREATER. I mean really, why would (vendors like) Total want to sell one liter (33.8 0z) @ $10 per liter, when it can sell 11 liters @ $10 or

$110. to one !!!! ??????????????????????

Why spend money and use resources - 23 extra oil changes per 100k miles or around $900 and 25 gallons of oil - when there is absolutely no reason to change oil and filter that often under typical conditions? I assume one of the reasons you bought the TDI was for fuel economy.

I would like to mention Amsoil I meets VW 504.00/507.00 specifications.

I am still getting my oil free, but because I know how good the product is I change my oil at 5k to our AEL 5w30 A Low-SAPS, Low-Viscosity Formula for European Gasoline and Diesel Engines. We sell the Mann Filter HU7197x- for the TDI Jetta as well.

I hope this helps it available to through the internet shipped by UPS.
