I've been looking at the JSW from a need for trunk space point of view, but not sure what to make of the fact that the 2010 JSW is really the 5th gen. JSW with cosmetic changes to look like 6th gen. Golf. The Golf is the real 6th gen. Golf with the new stiffer body, better ride, sound proofing, new interior etc etc. Anybody have an opinion on the differences and if the differences are that substantial?

I don't know a lot about the Mk6 design, but I do know that it is relatively new. An advantage to the JSW might be that it is a proven design. All of the "kinks" have already been worked out. Plus there are lots of aftermarket "upgrades" that are also already out there and proven. You will probably have to wait before some of these things are available for a Mk6.

However, in the long run it's your call.

Have fun!

Is the space in the Golf enough for you? If it is get it.

If not get the JSW or wait for the next generation still two years away.

Not much other choice I'm afraid.

I don't really want a Golf because it is a bigger car than our Mk. IV yet has less cargo space.

Don't really want a JSW mainly because I want a premium (think GLS vs. GL in Mk. IV speak) cloth interior which is not offered (premium or otherwise) and somewhat because it's a slightly dated "tarted up" platform. Canada gets a cloth interior in the TDI JSW - lowline, crappy feeling cloth, but it's a start.

Who knows what the next generation will bring? It's a gamble to see what VW thinks Americans want from the new Tenn. production plant.

We drove a 2010 JSW TDI (w/16" wheels/tires) and Golf TDI back to back the other day. The Golf felt a bit tighter and "quicker on its toes" than the JSW. Did not find the Golf quieter than the JSW.

We had just looked at / driven a very nice 2005 Passat GL (w/cloth interior) TDI w/80k mi. on it that a member here is selling (may have sold already?) and I'd have to say that if I was forced to take one of the three cars I'd pick the Passat over the other two.

For now I'm just going to be dumping a bunch of preventative maintenance $'s into the old Golf IV.

Just a couple question on the seating.
1) Are the seats/comfort different between the Golf and JSW?
2) Particularly the driver seat and pedals between the Golf and JSW. I like to elevate the seat as high as possible. (I went to Hudson Valley VW but only sat in a 2010 GTI)
3) Also the rear seat leg room would you say is the same?
thanks!

I test drove a Golf TDI manual shift model yesterday. Nice little car. Seats were very nice. Handled great. First time I've driven a manual shift car in 15 years and I really liked it.

Fit and finish was great. Then I drove back home in my Passat which is still a keeper. I'd buy one to replace my Saturn btw!

Seen one at the dealership. They had a sticker on it from an Independent test facility. It was rated at 60 MPG highway. This works out to 50 MPG( US Gallon).

No more JSW in Canada for the 2010 Model Year.

Neat! So our 2009 JSW's are a 'One of a Kind'

1) Yes. Sit in a 2.5 gasser Golf seat. Same seat in the TDI. GTI seat is
different I THINK, certainly different fabric. The TDI Golf and Golf 2.5
seat does have "sport" bolstering. Side bolsters are more pronounced
than the JSW seats and the previous Rabbit & Mk IV Golf. As to
"comfort", well it depends what you like and what works for you.

2) I got the impression that there was more hight adj. in the Golf but I
could get comfy in either - except for the crappy v-tex in the JSW.

3) You can check the specs. on that one but when I adj. the front seat to be comfortable for me and then sit in the back I think the rear seat legroom was close enough that I'd call it the same.

The new Golf TDI gave me the impression that it had more front seat track travel back than the JSW, but I don't need all the travel. I'm 5'10" w/33 or 34" inseem. In our Mk. IV Golf I usually have the seat one notch forward from the rearmost position and 3 lever cranks down from the highest position. I didnt need nearly as much of the seat track travel in the latest Golf TDI.
