2009 Jetta TDI electrical problems?

Hello All,
I wonder if the collective TDI experience may be able to help me out.

My 2009 Jetta TDI is giving me some problems. Last weekend the A) Windshield washer fluid pump B) fan inside the cabin (heat/ac) and C) cigarette lighter stopped working. I THINK I've checked fuses.. and found nothing amiss. Anyone have this happen? I just find it strange that all three would go in the same day.. One thing I may have done wrong... I use the cigarette lighter to charge my phone, and the cord for that was frayed. Could I have shorted out the system this way?

Thanks so much.

Hey Chris,

Unfortunately, I found myself in the same boat this morning. No spray, wipers work fine, no power to the 12V socket. I haven't noticed the fan though.

I checked all the fuses, they are all fine.

The pump on our cars are so inaccessible, I can't even touch it.

Ironically, I took the car to the dealership for the fuel tank neck recall, and they spotted the malfunction too. They said $120/hr for labour just to diagnose it...

Does anyone on this forum have any experience with this?

I did a forum search, and 20 posts came up, but none for mkv

Have either of you tried the interim fuses that are above the battery in the secondary fuse container. (not the fuses that are in the dashboard).

The frayed cord could have knocked out the fuse that goes to the individual wire from the battery box. Which one? The one thats burnt out.

But before you replace the fuse make sure the current draw is not more than the wire that feeds it can handle.

You need to get a DC amp-meter or ammeter that can measure 10 - 25 amps.

The Interior cabin fan can easily draw 5 amps of current on startup. the Windshield washer pump is another one that can draw 1-5 amps.

My guess is that it may be unrelated to the cigarette lighter fuse circuit, but eventually they get connected to the battery, an that is where the main (Large Current) fuses are located.

I don't know about the OP's situation, but I've checked all the fuses on the side of the dash and under the hood. All is fine.

The dealership also checked the fuses.

I'd check the pump connection or voltage if I could reach it...

Anyone in the GTA has vagcom?

I'd start by scanning the Central Electronics and Climatic/Climatronic modules.... OBD works!

Thanks for the advice, oilhammer.

I've scanned the car twice without any error codes...

In addition, I can confirm that my cabin fan doesn't work either, just like the OP.:(

No DTCs, OK, that's step 1. Now, step 2 is to do some sleuthing and monitor the data to see if any clues come up. Remember, ECUs are dumb... they deal with inputs and outputs. Wrong input = wrong output.

:D that just blew right over my head...I have a simple bluetooth OBD reader, can't view by blocks, etc....

Wonder if there are anyone with VCDS thirsty for a beer:rolleyes:

Problem solved.

The trip to the mechanic didn't quite work out, but I did a lot of research and found a post by f2fanatic on these forums that had similar symptoms.

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=355874&referrerid=91749

It turned out to be a x relief relay under the dashboard.

Got a quote from the dealer for part 1KO 951 253 A for 12 bucks +tax.

Went ant bought the part thinking it's cheap enough to just try. Lo and behold! It's fixed!

No more need to shell out 100bucks for diagnosis.

Thanks to oilhammer for the advice f even though I had no proper tools. And thanks to f2fanatic for his post - saved me a couple of hundred bucks potentially.

created an account just to post this.

I have had the same issue.

I bought the part number and attempted to replace it myself. I replaced the one next to to a differently-shaped gray relay. It was the relay farthest to the left if you are looking down from the steering column. Part number matched up and everything. But it had no effect.

I took it to a mechanic and found out there is another relay, same part number and all, a few slots down from this (essentially to the right if you are looking down from steering column). It is next to a black relay same shape as the gray. Again, correct part number listed above, just make sure you replace the correct one--there are multiple.

Same problem different answer

I just bought a 2009 tdi sportwagen and the ac fan does not blow at all. Just like above. Aslo vcds has a code for short or open on the windshield washer too just like others. So I replaced the relay with the number 460 to the furthest right of the car on the fuse block. Still not working. So I used a test light to see if there was power to the relay and there was power to both the low and high load sides. But when I touched the ground side of the relay it activated the relay and the blower started working. So I am assuming there is a grounding issue. Tried the wipers and now they stopped working. checked fuses and none blown. Is the can bus controlling the grounded side of the relay? I have no clue what to test next.

OK I figured it out on my own the problem was the central electronics control unit aka cecu. Replaced it with superceeded part number from steeler. 450 list 360 with shop discount. Could have done better online. Easy fix just need to write down coding and recode after install with vcds. New one was aka hiline. Has programming for fog lights. Just don't forget to clear codes after recoding. On the vcds go to central electronics, then coding. Very easy.

Where is the 460 relay located? I'm having the same problem and bought the relay but can't find the relay box. Do I have to take the whole dashboard apart to get to it?

Helped my uncle fix his 09 2.5L gasser with the exact same problem, one of the relays located on the CCM was bad. There was an identical one next to it that controls the engine functions so we swapped them and the HVAC fan came online and the engine wouldn't start. Put in a new relay and it fixed the problem.

I think I am having the same problem. No ac fan, no wiper fluid, no power to either 12v in cabin or in trunk. Also, the power locks and windows do not work on the rear doors (though the driver door can lock and roll windows up/down). I can turn a wrench, but not great at the electronics. Anyone got a photo of the part or the location. I want to make sure I am pulling/buying the right thing.

Thanks in advance!

problem fixed... 460 relay

After looking around here, I narrowed it down to that relay. Got the part from the dealer today $18, and swapped it out (its a cramped area under the steering column). Everything broken is now working. Wiper fluid pump, cabin fans, 12v in dash and in trunk. Like others said, there are 2 460 relays under there. Its the one closer to the steering column.
