2009 Jetta, heat not working

I have a 2009 Jetta, with the engine at the normal operating temperature(190) I'm not getting any heat into the cabin. I can get heat only when I activate the aux heater by setting temperature to 80. Air flow to vent, foot, windshield works as expected. AC works fine. Fan works at every setting. With the fan set to 1, I noticed a change in air flow as I raise the temperature above 72, but no heat. Does the temperature knob move a cable to a valve or is it vacuum activated? How can I diagnose the problem?

Thanks
Paul

Where is the 190°F from? As the dash gauge will show 190°F for actual temp from about 165° to about 235°F. Need VagCom to see current temp.

And with VagCom it can be seen what the vent temp sensors (2) are at.

I had that same issue before. The plastic impellar had failed on the water pump. Weather was cool, and the car never overheated.

The problem appeared to resolve itself the next day, not sure what changed. Previously I had been driving at highway speeds for about 10 miles, the outside temperature was 50 degrees F. The dash gage showed 190, I assume the water was certainly greater than the outside temperature. Yet, all temperature settings except AUX heat gave me cold air. AC was off. I changed the flow between foot well, face and defroster/foot without any change. I'll monitor it for now and see if the problem reoccurs.
