2009 Audi A4 that came with a non-functioning KESSY rear door handle (handle itself and door lock works, just the KESSY on the handle isn't working).

Took a look online and saw that you have to back out a T20 screw to get the thumb plug out (very similar to Mk4), but there's a definitive hard stop to the screw. Once you do that, you're supposed to be able to give it (the screw) a push toward the front of the car, which opens some kind of "catch", allowing you to remove the thumb plug, then the door handle itself and easy R&R on the KESSY sensor.

On this car unfortunately, someone was in there already (as evidenced by some scratches on the trim, missing inner door panel holders) and that screw (pink arrow) isn't screwed into anything - it's just flopping around. Won't fall, won't screw in, won't screw out - just sitting there, I'm assuming whatever it is screwed into is broken.

So, the question is....how on earth can one get it out?

In the image above, the back of the plug is that circular section (red arrow) and it can move around with jiggling the plug from the outside, but I can't tell what it's snagged on that's preventing it from sliding out. It moves a bit, but there's definitely something in the way.
Any ideas on how to or where to push whatever however to release that catch?
Or anyone have an exploded diagram or view of what the innards of this thing look like?

Additional image - more straight-on view of the back of the thumb-plug. You can kinda see daylight poking in from around the corners.
