Sheesh, time to look into hotels with cheap weekly rates :/
I thought about it, but even a 40$ a night place would still be far more than fuel. Plus my own Cal King bed over a full kinda swayed me too. I'm sticking with the drive more, worry less theory... hope it works out for me. :)

The question needs to be, how many people with high miles add additives to lubricate the pump. I spoke with a friend that is a chemist with BP. He said there cetane is 49-51 with the premium diesel and that is one of the best to use. He has a TDI and said he would never run it without an additive unless you know for sure what the cetane is. 40 is the norm in the US and he said that is one of the problems

Cetane and LUBRICITY

:)

Don't know about your friend, but . .

Ask him what the 'cetane' number has to do with the price of tea in China?

We are after a better lubricity number here, not a high or low cetane number!

Something below 460 with 300 being even better. Cetane does not enter into the picture at all.

running a diesel engine on fuel with a lower than recommended cetane number can result in rough operation (noise and vibration), low power output, excessive deposits and wear, and hard starting. We have two problems, low cetane in most stations due to the low sulfur and not enough lubrication. Lubrication is the biggest problem.

Evidently you do not know much about it, but there
are indeed other ways to raise the cetane levels!

Don't know about you or what you drive (a diesel even ?) but all the D2 pumped
here in the states must meet certain cetane and lubricity levels.

I have never run accross any D2 that caused any of my diesels to run rough or not perform as
designed
. And I have been buying D2 since 1966 over the years for my various eighteen diesels.

Whatever I am finding now for my newer 2010 seems to be just fine, thank you.

Most additives bump the cetane level though and that CANT be a bad thing...of course we all know the main goal of the additive is lubrication for the pump and fuel system.
My 2011 golf has a WHOPPING 15,000kms going for first LOF at the DEALER (not stealer) tomorrow. 84.95+tax includes rotation and wash. seems in line.

Most of the HPFP problems are from dry diesel in CA and lack of lubrication on the pumps.
BMW has the same problem with pumps and this is why they extended the warranty, the law suit also helped. The problem was on gas engine pumps. A little lubrication will help the pump, and yes I have a A3 TDI and S5 supercharged engine. The A3 is new and perfect. We also have a JSW on order for 2012 for my wife. What concerns me is 124 miles a day she will be driving ,all highway. The S5 is 9 months old with 3K on it and the A3 6 months with about 4K. Both my cars. The wife drives a Honda Accord 75K never a problem but wants to go back to german and the A3 is my mine and to expensive to kill with 35-40K a year driving. I know that's what they are for.

So for Mr Green lets hope you don't have a problem out of warranty. The odds are better in CA for a problem.

Obviously, you do not know what you are talking about!

Perhaps the reason we here in the Golden State have as many problems as we do is
because we have more CR VW diesels than the rest of the country combined?

Please explain how you can by any stretch of your imagination say that our D2 here is dry?

BTW, for your information, my 01-22-10 built JSW has had a steady diet of an additive since
new, and at over 31k miles, shows no signs of any HPFP problems whatsoever!

Did it ever occur to you that many of the HPFP failures here in California are due to misfuelings?

changed my oil today..in waterloo ontario...high volume tdi store cause its a commute town.....asked 3 mechanics...any failures? NOPE not one single failure....so I am starting to believe that Canadian diesel is flat out better which means,.......IF you are running with no additive in the usa...you may need to get your head examined....I run it religiously up here.....

Just a few clicks past 53k here. Adding up fast, until July 7th I'm driving about 750 miles a week. Then in the middle of July we are taking a road trip to Denver.
