When I went to get it smogged, the technician said he couldn't pass it because of a CCM error. I had just replaced the battery. He thought that driving it for 60 miles might reset the CCM. I drove it many more miles than that, brought it back twice, and the error continued.

The car has reached the age where the accessories are failing. Handles and knobs are breaking and falling off. The sunroof opens and closes of its own accord. The alarm spontaneously sounds. (I solved the latter two problems by removing the fuses from those circuits on the panel.)

I'm wondering if my VCDS will help me diagnose the problem. But I can't find my VCDS.

So my one question and possible follow-up are: will a VCDS help me diagnose the problem? Can I borrow your VCDS? (I'm in the Bay Area.)

Bonus question: Do you have any other tips on clearing the CCM error?

Many thanks!

CCM usually refers to the comfort control module, which should not affect SMOG. Perhaps you mean engine control module (ECM)?

In any case a VCDS scan will be required - the generic term "error" is not helpful for diagnosis.

And to be clear, the weird electrical things can be related to a dysfunctional CCM, but like @P2B points out.....your sunroof opening/closing on its own has nothing to do with passing smog tests.

(And also to reiterate: get VCDS, look at fault codes in 01-Engine Module - those are what you need to address to pass smog testing. Look at 46-Convenience Module for what controllers might be failing there.)

I am in SF and have a VCDS. Shoot me a pm and maybe we can meet up to diagnose.

wow! i appreciate it!

i did a detailed (and strange) driving procedure that i read about. it's supposed to reset the CCM. not sure if it worked.

before i go to the smog shop, i'd love to meet up and see if it did.

i'm heading out of town, but i'll get in touch with you next week.

many thanks!

I believe you can use VCDS to force readiness.

You cannot.

I forced readiness for a 2000 2.0 gas engine Beetle not long ago. I forget the procedure but I had never done it before and I figured it out in just a few minutes.

There are just too many to list....
Some gas VAG cars you can go through the readiness testing manually, but none of the diesels allow for this. It sure would be nice if they did.

thanks, everyone, for your replies.

i understand that the sunroof and alarm problems aren't causing me to fail my smog test. i shared that information because i thought it might be useful context.

the vehicle inspection report's section entitled "OBDII Monitors Not Ready" lists one item: "Comprehensive Component." the guy at the shop called it CCM.

a friend with an OBDII/EOBD reader checked it. it said that one of the monitors is "incomplete."

he sent me a detailed procedure for starting and driving it. i tried it. i would like to see if it worked or if the monitor has remedied itself.

a kind member of the forum has offered to check it with his vcds. i'm going to reach out to him to take him up on the offer.

i welcome any additional advice.

many thanks!

this page describes the drive cycle i did: https://www.obdautodoctor.com/tutorials/obd-readiness-monitors-explained/

i just checked the car with an OBD reader. comprehensive control is still incomplete.

is a VCDS likely to diagnose the cause of this problem?

also: the page above says the fuel should be between 35-85% full. during this process, it has been 10-25%. will add fuel and try again.

i welcome any additional advice.

many thanks!

You need to use VCDS to look at fault codes in 01-Engine Module, as @Nuje and I previously posted, to determine what is preventing the comprehensive monitor from completing.

Adding fuel will not make a difference on a diesel vehicle.
