I have a 2006 Jetta TDI that has 0 compression on cylinders 1 and 4, cylinders 2 and 3 have 300+. This is a friends car that her son drove and it got hot on him and he drove it until it quit. Any suggestions on what to do first?
The car has 225000 miles on it. She bought it last year and doesn't know any of the service history. I have told her to do the timing belt kit and all associated parts, but it broke down on her before we could do it. I understand about the tools needed.
I've been a VW guy since I was a kid, but never been deep into a diesel VW. I've always had air cooled and gas VW's.
Thanks for any help

Whenever we see compression figures of "300+" the first question we have to ask is: was a regular gas engine compression tester used (they only go up to 300 psi) or a diesel compression tester that can do at least 600 psi?

If the former, the numbers given are of no help, since the important bits are between 300 and 550 psi. :)

Cylinder-to-cylinder differentials are also pretty important.

The zero compression cylinders are often valves stuck open...is the timing belt in place and moving?

Yes, I used a diesel compression tester, I bought it a while back as my dad has a TDI New Beetle and figured I'd need it one day.
The timing belt is in place and moving. Cylinder 1 is 0, Cylinder 2 is 300, Cylinder 3 is 310, Cylinder 4 is 0.

The piston rings might be fried. 276 is the bare minimum allowable, for a new engine you want 360-450.

The head needs to be removed & inspected, at least for warpage. While it's off, i would re-ring all 4 pistons.

There are just too many to list....
"Got hot and drove it until it quit"

...yeah, it needs an engine. Best bet would be to try and source a good used one. But the BRM is specific to JUST the 2005.5 and 2006 Jetta sedans. That's it. No other engine (sold here) will work.
