If you own or lease or owned or leased a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta with serial number between 1K_5M0000001 and 1K_6M749703; and Repaired, replaced or purchased the wiring harness for the left front driver door.

Head to http://vwclaim.ca/

I plan on pulling my ownership when I get home to see if it covers my "problem child"

Good luck

Class action description:

The Applicant requests a permission to bring a class action on behalf of all owners of 2005 and 2006 Volkswagen Jetta's for which a wiring harness that goes from the body to the inside of the driver’s door is too short. This design defect causes the sleeves of the wires to crack which causes short circuits affecting electrical accessories and the charging system.

I got a letter in the mail about this today.

Apparently one of the outcomes is for VW to extend the warranty out to 165,000 km on this part.

I'm at 388,000 km and I've not had trouble with that piece, so I guess I'm out. I threw the notice in the recycling bin.

I replace a lot of these harnesses. Really a pretty easy job, the A5's door is so well designed it comes apart quite easy.

Shame the harness couldn't be a little better. The new ones are a wee bit longer, though. Hopefully that will help.

I installed a new drivers door harness, took about 4 hours and cost some $180.00 before taxes .You have to remove the door lock, handle and the door skin [18 torx bits/bolts] along with the inner panel. They are made cheap and are crap and so was my 2001 Jetta. I bet the new VW are just as bad. Time to think about a car other then VW.

Has anybody tried to repair the harness? I mean, how hard could it be? Maybe an inch or two of wire could be added. It might not be any more difficult than soldering a wiring adapter for a stereo.

If the wear and abrasion is right at the connection, well, that would be hard.

I repaired mine, added an inch or two to the two thicker wires (both of which were semi-broken). This was what was causing my rain closing windows not to work. Otherwise everything worked fine so the symptoms can show up in a variety of ways.

:eek::eek: Yeah, maybe the car is not so bad.... crap, you could do ALL FOUR doors in 4 hours!!!!

Go take the door panel off of a Civic or Camry if you want to see what CHEAP really is.

I don,t entirely understand how this works. It seems a law firm has taken it upon themselves to help VW owners who have had a problem, recoop some money and VW Canada has to do all the mailing to inform the affected owners that they have this recource. The law firm gets 60.00 per owner that signs up plus VW Canada pays the law firm another 250,000 if the judge agrees with the claiments claim and costs to impliment. Now the same law firm wants a garrantee for others who will be affected in the future and of course who will get the 60.00 for those defects will be VW Canada since they have to administer this and then recoup the rest from there supplier. The 60.00 dollars comes from each owner before receiving any reinbusment.I don't see VW Canada losing on this as they will pass it back to their supplier.
Now if I sign up will I be screwed when it come to getting rust warrantee, for the piddly 180.00 bucks I will get will VW then consider me now out side there rust protection warranttee since it is really good will more than anything. Goodwill now what is that anymore? I guess I will sign up anyways but leave it to the last minute and hope I get my rust fixed in the meantime.

I received my notice and even with 330,000km's I am told that I may be able to get the harness replaced by paying the $60 deductible. Mine is just starting to act up now. First indication was by opening the door, the trunk opened by itself. Also having allkinds of bells going off when shifting to reverse.

How does that work, Strommer? It says 165,000k is the limit. Do you have other information? I'm at 190,000 and my driver's window doesn't work.

Just an update on this. I just received the letter regarding the claim and I am out of luck as I am sure most people owning a 2006 TDI would be with a ceiling limit of 165k KM's. Only people driving to church would have low enough KM's and I'm sure would not buy a diesel. I guess it's time to go and see what it's going to cost me to replace this harness on my own.
