2006 Jetta BRM - P0122 Throttle Issues

I recently purchased a 2006 TDI Jetta, Mk5 with the BRM engine, 5 speed manual.

I have the pesky P0122 code, "Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input". I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and still get the same code. So I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes thinking it might reset, no dice.

So I cleaned the grounds under the airbox (another forum member stated this fixed his/her issue), no dice. Then I disconnected the TPS and tested the voltage on the plug, and everything came back as normal (as per 2 other forum posts):
Pin 1 to ground - 5v
Pin 2 to ground - 5v
Pin 1 to 5 - 5v
Pin 2 to 3 - 5v

I would ignore it if it was just a code, but unfortunately the car is acting up. Randomly when driving, the accelerator stops working. Whether I am maintaining speed, or speeding up, the vehicle stops accelerating and I start coasting and slowing down. The tach just starts slowly dropping, as though I had just thrown the car into neutral and continues to idle and doesn't shut down. In order to get moving again, I have to shift into neutral, then back into gear. 75% of the time it works, the other 25% I have to do it multiple times to get the car/throttle working again.

The weird thing is that cruise control works great, I can drive for days without an issue. When it happened today, I was close to my cruise control speed setpoint, so I pulled the cruise lever to resume, and the car began accelerating to my desired speed then maintained it as if there were no problems. So I don't believe this is anything other than a throttle issue (not a fuel issue or otherwise).

Is this something I will need a VAG com to reset or calibrate the TPS?
Is there a way to test the new pedal tps vs the old pedal tps to confirm that the new one is working correctly?

I know VAG com is the way to go, and I am in the process of ordering one. However, I need this car running asap and can't afford to wait for delivery, then try and learn how to properly use the VAG.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Seems to me you are using a generic obdii scanner. The code it is reporting to you might be something totally different if scanned using vag com.

Your BRM does not have a tps. In fact it is throttle by wire meaning the pedal is a potentiometer connected to the computer. The part most likely you are referring as the tps might be in fact the Anti shudder valve ?

Your symptoms look like typical accelerator pedal fail. When the problem happens do the rpms go up to ~1200 rpms?

These cars have two sets of code tables. The gov mandatory obd11 which are emissions relates and the way more extensive vag propiertary which are a very powerful diagnistic tool.

Thats the reason using generic scanners is a hit or miss...

Thanks for the reply Carlos. You're absolutely right, I am using an OBD2 scanner, waiting for my VAG com to come in.

You're also right about the TPS, I am incorrectly calling the sensor in the pedal the TPS. I have replaced the pedal and am still having issues. The ASV is disconnected, along with the EGR, which might be causing some issues?

The RPMs don't go up at all, it's as though I just threw the car into neutral. I guess I'll just have to wait for the VAG to come in. Thanks again for your corrections and reply!

Hey Ken

Yes either wait for your cable to arrive or find someone with one because there should be codes stores that will steer you in the right direction.

Once you can scan the car be sure to post the scan log in this thread so we can take a look.

I'm not sure if there's a better way to post this log? If so I'll edit!

Wow. Those are a lot of malfunctions. Please review this forum for posts about grounds, as your collection of malfunctions looks to me like it is caused by bad grounds somewhere. Grounds going bad in these cars is a very common cause of problems.

It also could be battery problems. I've had a HOST of malfunction code 0010 before. They are all about electrical gremlins. Then there is a pesky relay that came up on my car recently. I forgot the number, but I'll get back with you.

Hi Bob, any info regarding that relay? I'm terrible with any electrical issues, so any help would be much appreciated.

I noticed that some of the bigger fuses (I believe? They were labelled with numbers like 80) near the front of the battery have a lot of corrosion or buildup on them...cleaning them might be a good starting point.

Also, for anybody else who can chime in, is this something a Volkswagen dealership could find/take care of with relative ease? This is an older car, so sinking $3k into it is not my ideal path. My throttle issues, along with some of the other faults seem to be related to low voltage/current issues. I barely understand electrical systems, let alone troubleshooting and finding problematic relays/grounds, so digging into this too deeply is not likely something I can do quickly/by myself.

Thanks!

Some of the faults you are seeing come up when you disconnect the battery and then just plug in the Vagcom and read for codes. You are on the right track reading your codes with the Vagcom and testing accordingly. As far as corrosion and wire damage and such, a lot of people on here have found damage in the area that is under the battery where the electrical wires are all in a plastic channel, look around that area for any frayed or disconnected wires. Also, sometimes when you swap parts out and you get the same error message either you need to clear codes and retest or the new part is faulty or the error is due to an electrical gremlin nearby. If you do have corrosion and such in your fuse and relay areas, clean those out and make sure you dry it all well before running the car or you can cause worse shorts, ha. As far as going to the dealership, not every dealership has a TDI or MKV guru. Sure, MKVs have lots of common faults, including leaky sunroofs.... but I would look for an electrical systems guru who can pinpoint errors quickly and easily and won't charge dealership fees. Remember that dealerships don't always have well trained mechanics because they get fed up with low pay and instead work for independent shops. Ask around and someone should know someone in your neck of the woods who can help you out. And lastly, sometimes you do have to reprogram or recalibrate the throttle when you replace it, especially if part numbers are superseded or different. To do that, you can probably find it on the Vagcom forum, lots of DIY info there.

Lots of luck!!!!!

Have you figured out what was the problem? Mine is acting the same way yours is and cruise is how I was getting down the highway. Very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go and drop tons of money into it and not have anything help. Thanks again!

Have you figured out what was the problem? Mine is acting the same way yours is and cruise is how I was getting down the highway. Very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go and drop tons of money into it and not have anything help. Thanks again!
Unfortunately I never was able to 100% positively identify what was causing the issue. However, after cleaning all the grounds, disconnecting then reconnecting the ECM, and cleaning the bar fuses on the front of the battery the problem went away.

Then the clutch went and the shop that fixed it likely didn't support the engine, so the car started spewing oil when I was 8 hours from home so I cut my losses and scrapped it - a real shame.

The car could never make it the 134km round trip to work without acting up, but after doing all of those things, plus replacing the pedal and clearing the codes with the VAG com (and any other stuff I posted about here), my issues never reappeared for the 1000km before the clutch went.

Best of luck. I want another VW soon...if you haven't, get yourself the vag com cable and save yourself some money and many headaches! Cheers!

Thanks for answering me. I have thought about buying the VAG com but with roughly 371,000 km I don't want to be wasting my money buying it to see the car have to be scraped in another 1000 km. I've had the car for the last 80,000 km and problems after problems have been happening in the last 15,000 km or so. I don't know how much longer this car gonna last is my only worry. If you think the VAG com is a good investment I might have to get it. Just looking to see if it helped you out as much as the price is.

I know where you're coming from for sure! The nice thing for me was that I sold the cable when the car was scrapped, so it only cost me $75CAD..less than half an hour of labour. I have no affiliation with the company, but can definitely say that it was the single best tool or part I've ever bought for any of my vehicles!
